Apparently Luke Plapp crashed in the TT reconnaissance ride, and they couldn't get the bike ready/fixed in time for the race. It looks like Adam Yates has been working on his TT position over the winter, but I'm always surprised by the number of riders who don't do the work. Especially the riders who have terrible, or completely outdated positions, like the designated leaders of some of the lesser or weaker teams.

You are missing the point of Froome's opinion. It is about training. He feels that TT bikes are not safe to train on because training has to be done on open roads with cars and other things around. In a race, it is a closed course. Another point he made is that it would level the playing field as lower budget team can't afford the time in wind tunnels.
@MDP1702
@MDP1702 2 жыл бұрын
Except as can be seen with Plapp, riders still will take a position that isn't much if any safer compared to an ITT bike. Arguably it would just be better to improve ITT bike with the aspect of safety in mind, like brakes on the middle bars, a mirror or screen+camera to still have a view of the front when looking down, ... As for level playing field, I can maybe agree on that in the lower categories, but if you are a world tour team, this shouldn't be that much of an issue. Even if it is, just give riders that aren't GC or ITT candidates a regular bike and only have ITT/GC candidates in your team ride ITT bikes, probably would already relief a lot of pressure on logistics and mechanics as well as the number of needed ITT bikes in the entire team. Wind tunnels would still be used though, most use of wind tunnels by teams now is with regards to other equipment (like helmets, suites, ...) and position, I don't think the bike spends that much time in the wind tunnels, considering how aerodynamic it already is. Only the really well of teams might do that for marginal gains probably.

@@MDP1702 sorry? it's not much safer? he's literally on the hoods just like you would usually ride a road bike... Actually it's safer because he's got 2 more contact points with the bars with his forearms and his upper body is much more stable and more locked down so the front wheel won't be easily swayed by the wind. I ride around in this exact position on my road bike almost 50% of the time with the other 35% being on the hoods and 15% on the drops.

Is there a pattern where GC leaders over perform in time trials? I can think of Philipsen today, Gaudu in Algavre, MvdP in TDF, Alaphilippe in TDF, and for sure more examples
@tugabooga
@tugabooga 2 жыл бұрын
Well Philipsen isn't a GC leader, I think the motivation of such a good time is the points jersey, but what you say is in my opinion explainable by the fact that they have to lose the minimum time possible in order to stay in contention, and thus they'll not only outdo themselves in terms of power, but also positioning, a rider who is racing an ITT with no interest in said TT won't put themselves in too unconfortable positions to be more aero, while those who have interest and don't want to lose time will try to be as aero as possible even if it is painful or incomodating
@LennieNelson55
@LennieNelson55 2 жыл бұрын
The Yellow Jersey in July gives you superpowers. The prospect of losing it from a TT probably sounds offensive to the likes of Alaphilippe and MvdP. It doesn't hurt that those guys have tremendous 30min-1hr power.

Safety is a secondary thing to cost. TTing was a lot more popular in te US before time trial bikes became the norm. You'd just have your aero bars and clip them on, and you were good to go. Now everyone thinks if they don't have a $10k ITT rig why bother, and so TT participation dropped, and there's basically no TTs anymore. Best approach is just to set the rules for what's a legal bike, and that applies to all road races. Simple. Want TT bikes? No problem, but then it's okay in a crit as well as a TT. May the odds forever be in your favor! If aero head position on mass-start bikes is such an advantage then it's a problem already in mass-start racing, where breakaways are basically ITTs. If it is a safety issue then that's something which needs to be addressed for mass-start races anyway.

Rules for position on a road would prevent the position Plapp used. Riders are only allowed to support themselves on the hands, feet and butt. Plapp was using his forearms to support himself. If TT bikes are banned, TT rules would likely change to match road stage rules, and Plapp's position would fall foul of the rules.

Helmet manufacturers are tacking the piss at this point, surely. Socks aren't allowed to exceed UCI parameters but you can wear an aerodynamic fairing on your head? Forget the TT bike debate (lol, more a storm in a teacup than a debate) helmets that encourage protracted intervals of dangerous blind riding, that are an aerodynamic element masquerading as a piece of safety equipment are far more worthy of attention. It makes more sense to keep TT bikes AND ban head fairings than vice versa.

Banning TT bikes is a ridiculous idea. If you're not looking where you're going, you're going to crash eventually. I've been arguing against the use of TT bikes for several years now. There's absolutely no reason in the world for them to be used when everyone uses them. If some did and some didn't, then those who did would likely have an advantage on the typical TT course. But if everyone is gaining the same benefit, then why the ridiculousness of it all? I'd be far more interested in seeing what the top riders could do against each other on their regular road bikes. Who cares if someone is a TT specialist only when the conditions present themselves with a mostly-flat course and specially-designated bike? What does that have to do with the rest of the entire stage race? More often than not we see riders make fools of themselves on TT bikes, and there's been no shortage of disasters when it comes to Team Time Trials on TT bikes. I've yet to come across one good reason as to why TT bikes are even allowed. Thanks for the highlights, btw. Outstanding work!

Thoughts on ineos abandoning the marginal gains approach? They have moved to bioracer kit which is clearly baggy and not as fast look as castelli. They had Yates running a 2x chain setup in the flatest fastest course possible? Theyve stopped trying to control races as they used to?
