Tallahassee is actually one of the most beautiful small cities in the country. You are just seeing downtown. The FSU campus right next to downtown is beautiful as are all the canopy roads that stretch north out of downtown. If you had just driven a couple more blocks down College Ave, you would have ended at the front gate to Florida State University and the fountains. Tallahassee is also extremely "hilly" unlike most of the state. I went to school at FSU and loved it. I moved away to ATL in 1995 but I still go back for football games or to visit friends who stayed. Going back to Tally makes me appreciate how clean it is and how well the roads are maintained and traffic lights are synchronized unlike Atlanta which is hell to drive in most of the time. Also, just FYI..... Florida A&M University is also located in Tallahassee just south of downtown.

Yes, I love the hills . The streets round Adams and College, Duval and Jefferson look very inviting and even cosy but there's a cold and uninviting feeling about the rest of the city. Way too much glass, steel and concrete and I would guess the city is not very walkable (?). Maybe I am wrong but these are my impressions .
@Tgogators3 жыл бұрын
@@johnconway8070 Downtown is walkable, but if you're in the center near the capital or going to the capital, you'll probably have to walk up a steep hill. In general though, it's a commute by your car city (or be ready to make good use of Uber) the city bus routes serve downtown and campus the best. The architecture of kind odd, it's too blended of different generations, imo. There is one part heading away downtown (Near Tharpe Street and 7th Avenue) that looks straight out of the 60s then proceeds to look incredibly modern.
@Tgogators3 жыл бұрын
Good critique, I've moved away for more career opportunity, but I'm always proud to call Tallahassee the place I grew up in (and did community college at). I do businesses and visit some family still there at least once every season and love it evey time, a big feeling nostalgia. If I could ever afford it, I'd like to have a weekend apartment of some sort in the heart of downtown (could be a lucrative Airbnb during football season). November is when the temperature starts to drop outside noticeably from the average, it feels amazing.

I live in tally. Crime is getting nuts here, every day I've been playing the local game "gunshots or fireworks" it was gunshots. again.

Unreal!!! You forgot to tell us all about the violence and crime. Folks, it's really a nasty, bum infested and poorly planned black hole. You've been warned. Carry if you visit, and enjoy the sights just south of the capital building.... orange Ave has many very good restaurants that are sure to please...... I'm gonna stay on my little homestead with the chickens, cats snakes and such.... Enjoy.

Coming from someone who’s lived here all my life, I would say moving to Tallahassee isn’t the best idea for those who are in the prime of their lives. Finding a good job in this city can be hard and tiresome. There are a lot of nasty people here but there’s also a handful of good people just like in any place so don’t think anyone isn’t helpful or nice. There isn’t much to do here at all except for when the fair comes in town or if there is Famu or Fsu homecoming and all three of those events take place nearly around the same time. There’s nice land and beautiful homes in many areas and there are two great universities here. I would only recommend that those who are coming here for college or those who are looking to retire move here willingly though because the capital of florida doesn’t have much to offer sadly compared to the other cities in this state.

I used to think Tallahassee was a few steps ahead of most Florida cities. After being here seven years, it's just like most other towns. It has good areas and bad areas and room for improvement all over. Would have been nicer if traffic patterns would have been planned better for growth years ago. Like other Florida towns, growth has taken its toll on the small town charm. It's still has lots to offer, you just have to look a little harder now.

Boutique Hotels? perhaps Hotel Duval and maybe the Governors Inn, Tallahassee lacks big time in hotels variety, to where they could not host a NCAA bowl game, but more (mostly chain) hotels have opened up in the last two years and there are plans for more. But Tallahassee is a lovely city to grow up in. It's not painfully small like Thomasville,GA yet not big enough to have the suburbs have their own township names (areas like midtown, betton hills, killearn, Bannerman, Lake Jackson; are to still addressed "Tallahassee,FL"). Home to 2 world renowned Universities and one of the top 25 community colleges.

I lived in a city that was a state capital and that was Boston MA. To me Tallahassee is a town and not a city. There are no commuter rails that connect Tallahassee west to Pensacola or to East to Jacksonville, North to Atlanta and south to Tampa or Miami and all in between. Amtrak is no longer here, grey hound buses are horrible and catch fire, I know I was on one. Public buses stop on my side of town early and do not run on the weekend and take hours to get to the other side of town/city, the airport flights are expensive. Handicapped accessible is none existent. Traffic lights are not synced correctly and when someone crosses the street not all lights turn to red to allow that person to cross the streets safely. Many stores are also not handicapped accessible or have working scooters for the disabled. Downtown is mostly banks, law firms, accountants or something do with the government buildings. Malls are closing, stores are closing and so forth. Lack of sidewalks for my side of town and decent stores which is from High Rd to Capital circle and Tennessee St to Capital circle. Unless you have a good working car with low miles you have to get around other ways because there is no walking there. I have been here 11 yrs and like others have said the best part of this city/town are the parks and covered roads from the trees (that is unless they take them down for more new builds).

The place has no character or pizzazz. It's green in some neighborhoods and a few beautiful homes but yawn, why bother. I didn't go back there for 25 years. It changed a little. More strip malls, some urban sprawl past I 10, a little more fast food. Not much else except football of course.

Very dependent on area, just like any city. If you live in midtown or Northside tally, then it isn't an issue at all and you don't really think about it. Especially Northside, that's where the nicest neighborhoods and best schools are. But housing is more competitive in those good areas, naturally. If you're on the airport side and a few other areas then yes, there is crime around. Good place for a family with younger kids, would not recommend if you are in your 20's... far better options for that age group.
