Dude just wanted to say you have been an inspiration for change in my life. I remember watching your rebuild series on the ZX1400 and that made me go back to college to learn motorcycle mechanics and now three years later I have just purchase two motorbikes from auction to repair and sell on. I know this is just a passion of yours and you do it for the fun, but you should know that you have helped a young guy find his passion in life as well. Many thanks HeroRR :)

Whew, this hit home hard man. I was a mechanic in the army for 9 years. Got out, did tractor trailers work, don't like it, did land rovers, that's pretty decent, thinking about doing motorcycles. My buddy just gave (yes gave) me a 2003 vfr800. I'm gonna restore it and see how I like working motorcycle and riding 2 wheels again. I have a feeling this may lead into something I love.

@@benfrank1583 I’ve done plenty of heavy equipment and trucks also, bikes are a Breeze to work on in comparison and a lot more fun. Once you establish a good reputation people will stick with you because bikes are their toys and they won’t trust just anybody. I wish you the best of luck and success, I’d love to open a small shop as well. I plan on doing mostly restorations, they are the most fun and you’ll learn a lot.

My '98 VFR had sat a while under previous ownership, and the brake fluid was so gunked up that, even after thorough bleeding, there was some crap in the secondary master cylinder that blocked a check valve, leading to the rear brake dragging hard on the disc and overheating it on a short ride. It took me a while to figure that problem out, figured I'd share in case it helps you avoid an issue with this build. Also, you probably know about various avenues to de-link the brakes. I ended up keeping the link and getting Galfer stainless lines, but if I did it over again, I might go with Superhawk fork lowers, and F4i rear brake. There's lots of options, and the linked brakes are pretty nice most of the time. Long time fan, was stoked to see you got a 5th gen! Can't wait to see the rest of the build!

I got my 99 a few years ago after watching your vfr video, it was almost all original and in excellent condition with only 10k miles, I had it for $1900. Since then the bike price has risen quite a bit. It’s still in my garage with other 10ish bikes came and went.

When swapping the rear-shock for a new Yss on my 1997 Vfr750f, the collector or pipes didn’t need to be removed. The Centre-stand also stayed in place. The swinging arm nuts were loosened- moved roughly 8cm rearwards which gave enough clearance to remove the old shock and whizz the new one in. A special tool was needed to loosen the swing-arm holder which went onto a half-inch ratchet. Buying that part saves masses of time and is worth every penny (or cent).

For the VFRs, Honda kept the RC30 single sided swingarm, but moved the exhaust to the "wrong" side!

With you there on the aesthetics of a left mounted exhaust. Tyga makes a left mounted exhaust for the RC36 and it looks absolutely killer. The downside is that it requires you to remove the center stand, and I'm sure that's the reason why Honda switched to a right exit exhaust for the street bikes.

Old man tip: When an engine sits that long, it's smart to lubricate the cylinder walls before cranking it and crank it by hand first with new oil in it. There is rust in there. 🥷

Great to see you rescuing this bike, I had a 2000 VFR great bike. While your working around the throttle bodies check the linkage, mine where sticking really bad! I thought it was the cables so I replaced them, but didn't solve the problem. Ended being the throttle linkage sticking. Keep up the great work dude.

Me and a buddy just found a 2000 vfr800 at Barber vintage fest for 1600 with a clean title! It’s rc51 tail swapped and the tank and fuel pump looked identical to this, save that it was crystallized. It ran on day two though. Awesome having you to follow along with as we do the same rebuild.

I laughed so hard at the "I don't know why I'm even trying to save this fuel pump" Sometimes we can't help ourselves we believe everything can be saved. Well not me I'm lazy I'd buy a new part before bothering to save something. Because I think like well it's half dead it might die shortly down the line so I'll replace it instead as I don't want to do all this again.

Throw every hose, every fucked up plastic. Flush every liquid every oil. Change the chain, brake pads, brake hoses, fluid reservoirs. Rebuild fork and calipers. Change tyres. Change front and back sprockets. Repaint fairings, repaint chassis and the engine. Rewire the entire electrical system. Clean up throttle body’s. And use the bike for another 50 years

Looks like your blinkers have the same issue as mine. The left side works, the right side, the relay clicks really fast with no light, then the light comes on after a few seconds. Id bet this gets worse with colder weather, mine does. I have yet to find a fix for this problem. If you do please post about it. There is not a lot of concrete information out there.

Yeah the brakes are linked, the 2 smaller outside pistons are the rear operated ones and the larger center one is from the front. Cracking the bleeder valve allowed me to push everything in nice and easy.

Looks like the entire fuel system WILL be gunked up with rusted particles, upto & inside of the injectors..!! Luckily most/all of the rubber pipework can be replaced, and that pump filter combo too!!... ...by all that is mechanically driven, that pump system must go to the scrapyard in the sky for recycling & smelting down ASAP !!

Those compression test results are a little troubling. 5% variability between cylinders is perfect, 10% is acceptable. You had a 165 psi and a 200 psi result, that's almost a 20% difference.
@HeroRR
@HeroRR 7 ай бұрын
I think the reason was because the battery wasn't fully charged when I tested the first cylinder. Off camera I charged the battery and did the rest. I believe that's why we see the variation. Maybe i'll go back and re-test that first cylinder.
