It wasn't too long ago that many of us thought that Ben Simmons could become the next LeBron James or Magic Johnson... and in his first couple seasons it looked like he was on pace to becoming an all time legend. However his offensive game has regressed every season and now he's one of the most criticized players in the league and has lost his starting role on the Brooklyn Nets.
So how did we get to this point? To answer this question we need to go back to the 2016 NBA Draft and look through Ben Simmons career to see where it all went wrong.

Ben Simmons is what you get when Talent doesn't Work Hard. He's the epitome of Last one in, First one out when it comes to working on his game. Idk a single competitive team that would hitch their wagon to a player who only regressed, and eats up tens of millions to put in strictly cardio game after game.

see this thrown a lot like you actually saw simmon's daily routine. JJ confirmed in their interview that simmons constantly works on his jumpshot before and after games/practice, so yes simmons does work hard. thats like saying that every honor student is guaranteed to get in harvard as long as they study hard, life doesnt work like that. His unwillingness to shoot is one of the weirdest things I've seen in my 25 years as an NBA fan. Physically, there's nothing stopping him from developing this fundamental skill. Besides, if there's something most selfish players like to do is to the every shot under the sun, even if it is the hardest 3 ever. That's not only about the hustle, you can't hustle out of nowhere. Something bothers him. Simmons looks frustrated af. It's clear, he can't do everything people expect him to do. The NBA is a meat grinder, he needs to either have a break from the game (maybe a definitive one), or go to a team where the pressure is way lower than Philadelphia and specially New York, even this has the risk of him being the "superstar" of the team. I'm no psychologist, but I think he doesn't believe how good he is, that's why he can't improve, he just doesn't let himself do what's good for him. I was in this situation (and go back sometimes) and I know a lot of people of my generation that's in this hole too, he's just a year younger than me, maybe it's a generational thing, idk. Ironically, he needs to "trust the process" and give a few steps back to go forward.

Ben Simmons is like the star player in high school and college that looked like MJ until he plays someone almost on the same level as him. Type of guy that will be 65% from the field his whole life until someone 80% as good as him comes and he loses all confidence becomes an 43% from the field player.

I think the problem is that there was too much hype of him being a big point guard like Lebron and Magic. If he came into the league as a small ball center instead of a guard, he would have a different career trajectory. In order to raise his draft stock, Simmons developed a skillset that would have the casuals hailing him as the next Lebron. He should have focused on big man fundamentals instead of trying to force himself to play as a guard, even if that meant that he would have not been as hyped as he was before entering the league

Now you’re saying this, people probably wouldn’t clown on his ft this much if he’s considered a center. He probably wouldn’t even ended up in 6ers since they got embiid. His whole career would’ve completely changed based on that

Philly Native here, I watched him unravel 2 years ago n I was both sad for him, n mad at him. He clearly suffers from a thinking problem on court when the stakes are high. I have no clue if he was raised to feel entitled in his childhood, but him being a #1 draft value did not help. He has to somehow embrace adversity for love of the game n life in general. Truth is, I don’t think he loves the game. He loves celebrity status. Maybe once that status is 200% tarnished, he could dig deep n get better. That’s looking highly unlikely. Stranger things have happened though so who knows. I really hope he works on what’s hard, n gets aggressive. His story could turn a 180 n become the athlete most us know he was meant to be, n how great of a story would that be? Epic.

This is way Giannis shots even 3-pointers at 25%. If you refuse to do this as a driver, you will hurt yourself because you close your driving lane. Even Charles Barkley understood this very early. Another example is Luca Doncic. He can shoot, but he's a lot better in his slowmo-drivings, but he shoots a lot because its the mix-up that's makes him strong and he got nearly 0 defense skills so he have to perform on the other end.
