I recently got hooked watching your videos. Never thought I'd see a picture of my mom on one of them. I was 12 years old when my mother, Karen Wetterhahn, died. Obviously it was a hard time and while the story is way more intricate and devastating, I think you did a good job describing its shortened version. It's always interesting reading or hearing stories from the people on the onside when we were the ones living it.

Our problem is that humans have solved natural selection. This is why truck maintenance is so desperately vital. It's so sad to think such a tiny piece of metal could have saved that young woman's life. My heart goes out to that truck driver. I hope that poor man found some peace after that. It was absolutely not his fault and I hope the guilt doesn't haunt him forever. What a tragic position to be in. Had this happen to my father and I while driving his rig many years ago. He noticed something was wrong with the way the truck was performing and as he was working it out I looked out the passenger window and saw one of the tires rolling at 50 mph up the embankment by the freeway. Luckily no one was in the way. In our case, the lug nut studs had sheared off somehow. We only lost the outer tire but it would pack quite a force.

So sorry that happen to Meg, I lost a cousin who worked a a hotel in the next town she lived in, her husband had a errand to do in the town she was working in, he stop by her job and told her he didn’t want to drive the motorcycle back home he wanted to drive the truck that she had drove to work that day, she was tired from working all day and didn’t want to argue about it so she agreed, the road that she had to drive back home on was a long stretch of road an was mostly wooded on both sides and didn’t have a lot of traffic on it, unfortunately that day their was another vehicle traveling on it going in the same direction she was and as she was riding the motorcycle on her home a vehicle went to pass her and loose lug nut came off of the other vehicle that was passing her and the lug nut hit her and caused her to lose control of the motorcycle and she wrecked and was instantly killed, she left behind four young children. The husband wouldn’t keep a job half the time and was a alcoholic , she was such a sweet kind women, I was a teenager when this happen and now as an adult when I think about it, I know those children must of had a hard life growing up after they lost their mother.

I once hit a truck tire fragment on I-95, coming back from a drive to freedom for puppies and kittens in Virginia. It was a glancing blow and the fragment was relatively small, but it still wrecked my windshield wiper fluid reservoir (still need to get that fixed). The sun had set an hour before, so it was dark. As an automation mechanic, a 25 cent failure can cause thousands of dollars in damage and potential injury. Eastern flight 401 crashed because a $10 landing gear indicator light on the control panel wasn't working, and the resulting decisions killed a bunch of people. Complacency is the enemy of safety. Meg's story is a sobering reminder of why doing things right and taking the time to double check your work is important because even flawless mechanics unknowingly install flawed parts. I'm a Commercial License holder and drive a school bus for a local district where I live. As drivers, we're only required to check the tires for air content and tread depth, tightness of lug nuts and axle nuts, and condition of sidewalls and mags. I could see the mechanic who last checked that missing lock washer as the one held responsible for those tires coming off the truck.

It's actually fairly well-known. But Mr Ballen's delivery really opened up my understanding of the incident, and of how unfathomable it really is. Yes, yes, I "knew" Edwin Booth had recently saved Robert Lincoln's life, and that then his unsuccessful reprobate brother assassinated Abraham Lincoln, but not in the way I know it now. Mr Ballen really brings home the awesome humanity of eveyone involved, as he does in every story he tells. He's possessed of an extraordinary talent for explaining our souls, as a group, to one another. I feel lucky to have found him!

Another tip for sharing the road with truckers: if a semi gets in the left lane to let someone merge from an entrance ramp, DON'T then try to pass them on the right. Just ride behind them and let them merge back over. Otherwise, they end up stuck in the left lane and, inevitably, traffic gets slowed down in both lanes. Also, ZIPPER MERGE, people. If, when at a bottle neck, every car let one car merge in front of them instead of trying to shoehorn past them, traffic would literally keep flowing. In boot camp, different groups would use zipper merging in the hallways and it was beautiful. No one missed a beat. If all drivers did this, the world would be a better place. And, yes, it's mentioned in your driver's ed books and is considered the best method in merging situations. Also. Use turn signals and refresh yourself on right of way laws. Okay, now I'm just ranting. But the more you know, right?

I'm sure you're absolutely right about that. In high school waaay back in the late 1950s I had a World History class with a room full of boys & only three girls. Plus, the teacher was also a coach who apparently loved baseball. He interspersed his short lectures on history with a ton of open conversation (with the boys, of course) on baseball. So we girls mostly had private chats, with a little studying now & then. I had no trouble passing tests, but surely did not learn very much World History - still don't know what I should. What I have learned comes mostly from reading on my own and from my very smart husband of 61 years who has always been a history buff. Neither of us went to college & have been completely happy about that. Before retiring I was a bookkeeper/office mgr., and he was a Deputy Sheriff.

Equally important is to know these things in case you *do* breach safety protocols! That way, you can receive prescribed prophylaxis. Oftentimes, if you're able to seek medical treatment proactively, toxic metals (any other toxins) can be medically assisted in removal. Even if there isn't a direct treatment, early intervention can offer supportive care while the body removes toxins. This isn't always true, but it's why it's so important to never just brush off a breach of protocol and move on hoping nothing will happen.

They probably teach you this in school so future jobs can't poison you, and so you know better and don't follow unsafe commands blindly. Those big corporations don't want employees, they want sacrifices. There are so many terrifying cases of it. For those of you that haven't used latex gloves a lot, there's a ton of everyday stuff that they WILL NOT protect you from. I used them mostly as a mechanic. Virtually everything in your car will break them down. If you have to mess with anything toxic I suggest you pour a little on a glove and come back in a couple of hours. The first incident is chilling, especially since it is so easy for this to happen. I have a slightly different one to share. I was in a carpool on the way to work, when a car sped past the one I was in. Immediately, our driver pulled over so fast that the left side of the car went up the sidewalk. When he hit the brakes, we were all jerked forward and started asking what had happened. The driver turned his face towards us and we gasped as we saw he now had a chunk of flesh missing from the right side of his forehead, and blood was gushing out of the wound. Turn out there was a small piece of brick or a small pebble on the road, which was kicked up by the tire of the car that sped past and hit our driver. Thankfully, we were able to arrest the bleeding and get him to a nearby hospital. He eventually made a full recovery and went back to work, but this memory haunts me to this day.

@@pv1866 that comment tells me you have very little knowledge of the civil war. First off way more union soldiers (the north) were killed by confederates (the south) than confederates killed by union soldiers. A simple Google will tell you that without having to actually read a history book, if they still exist. "The south" didn't surrender. One man who was politically over the confederacy surrendered. In all fairness, not because the north showed any potential in winning the war, but because the south at the time was impoverished and they were having a difficult times getting supplies, guns, food and medicine and that was killing more men than actual bullets. It's also important to point out that many confederates weren't fighting for slavery. They were fighting for what they perceived as an invasion. They were fighting to protect their families and land. There was no internet or mass communication back then. Men simply fought what they saw as the enemy. The idea this whole war was over slavery is preposterous and it blows my mind how people can't see that. Just like Vietnam. Do you think it was fought over some great cause? No, it was about greed, just like all wars. As a combat Veteran I've learned the hard way that wars are fought over money, power, control and elections, not for the good of common man. And btw, many northeners owned slaves and guess what...many blacks owned slaves. Mind blown!!
