If you're a new hobbyists and want to get into it but have very little budget they're fantastic learning tools. I pretty much always use the acrylic paints you can get at Wal-Mart or Target for like a dollar (with the exception of citadel washes). I'm certain the actual hobby paints would be better for painting, but I think I spend enough money on the models already. Anyway, I've gotten quite proficient with them, and I think I'm a pretty good mini painter at this point. They work for me, and are way cheaper.

If you consider volume of paint per dollar, there are actually realy great colors, which are even cheaper. In the hardware Store the Mixing Acrylic color for Wall paints have a high pigment density and can be thinned down very well. I use them very oftenly for terrain and lately i used them for plastic terrain and i realy think, i would also use them for miniatures.

It's worth noting that there are degrees of cheapness when it comes to cheap acrylic paints. These were the absolute nadir of price and quality. A painter was never going to get anywhere with them. But I've gotten craft paint from hobby stores that cost roughly $1.30-2:00 a bottle (brands like Anita's, FolkArt, Ceramcoat, and DecoArt), that work decently well. You just have to work with it a bit to understand how to use it. As with everything, you get what you pay for. Scraping the bottom of the barrel is counterproductive.

I got me the closest they had to magenta, which was remarkably close, cyan, which is an OK match, and lemon yellow plus white and black in the large 75ml tubes, 1.35€ each. They mix great. I also got a few other colors, but don't really use them.ñ other than the red when I don't feel like mixing it. Also the metalics, silver gold and copper, 1.80€. The gold is that fake looking very yellow stuff, mixing it with silver made it much better, and a wee dab of copper made it perfect. The copper by itself is great, really looks it.

I used to use cheap Apple Barrel craft acrylic, they were about $0.50 USD a tube and they last forever. They can be thinned well enough to work, if you're on a tight budget, but they're the cheapest I would try to go. The pigments are huge and get grainy if you overthin them, yet they have so much acrylic medium in them they peel like latex if you put them on too thick. But I did paint models that came out surprisingly well, and because they are were tacky they were actually somewhat useful for dry brushing... In fact it was because they were so tacky that I discovered dry brushing on my own by accident 😅 But honestly if you were on a super budget your best bet is to just get the primary of a good brand. Vallejo Game Color is about $3.30 for 18ml. They mix well, they thin well, they coat well. Get Red, Blue, Yellow, Black, and White (if you have leftover money by a Brown, and a Silver) and you can make about any color you want. It's not as good as actual color, but for less than $20 you have a complete rainbow of paint. I've paint it on and off for years, and although I have improved the quality of paints I've purchased, I've never had a full set of colors, and some cases it just seems more convenient for me to mix a color myself. Thar said, the 2023 Vallejo Game Colors are great, and I wish they had a color set like that old one you bought
@electricbill1778 Жыл бұрын
When you're mixing the colours you should have mixed yellow, magenta, and cyan NOT yellow, red, and dark blue. Essentially, you're adding pigments into the mix that you don't want, and they will make every colour look muddy. Also, if you want to do the cheapest way of getting started, nobody would use those paints, so why not find out the lowest number of proper pots you could use as a beginner instead? At a guess, I'd suggest - yellow, magenta, cyan, black, white, and a metallic, probably silver :)

I recently 3D printed the solar system for my school. Even though I printed only one of half of each planet they are still too big for me to waste whatever model paints I have left. So, I used the box of store bought craft acrylic paints lying around instead. I added Tamiya thinner to every paint and used an airbrush to paint the planets. The paints looked fine with one solid color but all hell break loose when newer layers of different colors are introduced. So, for Earth I applied newer colors through dry brushing with little to no thinner.

You went really far with price here. I use tube artistic paints all the time (not so cheap as these but unexpensive) without problem. It is totally possible. Key is use of matt medium to get better spread of paint. You will use more layers because of transparency but you will get thin layer after all. You can get most of effects but you need to be patient. Acrylic delayers and flowers can be handy. From my experience using underpaint style of painting is better suited for such transparent paints (ala Dana Howl style of painting). Moreover because of transparency they are easy to use for highlighting and drybrushing. But patience is key here. Just another tool in palette of possibilty. You will not get Golden Demon using tube paints but you can get good results (and unexpensive)

finally somone agree with me, you can get good results bu cheap paints, also how i used matte medium thou? if i put matte medium on cheap arcylics paimts to make them better? im too poor to buy expensive paints like them do i will use matte mediums
@TeeeCeee3 жыл бұрын
@@gensischosen251 You need to experiment a little with matt medium and others mediums too. Start with 50/50 with paint. As I wrote you will get thinner layers because matt medium changes viscosity. If you overdo it will be too watery. You don't improve paints as such so you don't make them better. Lately i start to use citadel technical contrast medium with standard acrylic paint as first base on preshaded (black & white) primed mini. Essentialy you are glazing whole model (very thin layers) from the start. Shadows are created thanks to black/ white undercoat and contrast medium gives flow to paint to went into recessess. You can get instant shadows this way and instant highlights and very small amount of paint. It was not my objective, but this way is more fast and pleasant way to paint miniatures for games. If you are interested in preshading check for example Dana Howl channel. She described this process thoroughly

@@gensischosen251 Sure they can be used on terrain too. Acrylics are great on paper, xps, polystyren foam etc. All depends on used primer (it should be suited to material) which increases adhesion for paints. You can also use acrylic gesso if you want (it is applied using brush and has ability to shrink when dry) which is good and cheap. You have a lot of material on YT for it (The DMsCraft, TheTerrainTutor, Wyloch's Armory, Black Magic Craft etc. etc.)

@@gensischosen251 Paper mache miniatures. Very niche I guess. Lots of people plays with printed, paper ones. I live in Walmart country, and they have Apple Barrell craft paints for 55 cents and there are like a hundred colors. They... work... but the coverage is insanely bad for most of them. However, as Jay of Eons of Battle has stated, their black is better than Abaddon Black, and they are a must for doing terrain, basing, and DIY projects. Brand new painters would be best served by buying 5 colors of their choice from a good line like Vallejo- black, white, brown, main color, and accent color. You can almost paint an entire Space Marine army with those. Slowly acquire paints only when you immediately need them.
@kgoblin50848 ай бұрын
"Brand new painters would be best served by buying 5 colors of their choice from a good line like Vallejo" The problem is those paints aren't readily available for a lot of people - they either have to remote order them, or track down a games store which carries them. That's quite a lot to ask for someone new to the hobby... really the best thing for them is an option they can pick up, at a reasonably affordable price, from a local non-specialty store. I will hazard that the actual best paints for a new painter are artists acrylics - widely available thru general hobby stores, generally good composition, & high pure pigment (better than hobby paints honestly, which tend to be a mix of pigments to mimic particular materials). Even then though, they will have to learn some brand characteristics... a newbie wouldn't want to start with Liquitex Fluid Acrylics, for example - they're basically inks :/
@terricon4 Жыл бұрын
Ya, mid level crafts paints like folkart, americana, etc... can do decent for all basecoats and highlights/edges/etc.... and for like a fifth the cost of hobby paints. They tend to start having trouble when you do layering/blending/etc... but not all of them. I mean, I just had better luck with a cheap purple doing layering than with my expensive blue from Vallejo. The lower end craft paints like crafstman... oh ya they are like a half or less as expensive again, but you start getting that really chalky texture or super matte issue with those ones. I say get mid line crafts paints for most general basecoating colors and random things, and then get the hobby paints for special things like skin tones or other things you do lots of layering/blending with, or for some high saturation colors, some hobby brands have great high saturation colors that keep the saturation in thin layers, while not all high saturation craft paints keep it as saturated in thinner layers. Though some do by all means, it varies case by case though. In the end, mid line crafts paints are great for first time painters just roughing it on their first minis, and you can practice to see what types of models/colors you like painting with them, and then say you love orks, or dark angles, or necrons or tyrnids... you can then buy the more expensive hobby paints that will be best used on those ones afterwards, and then compare them to your crafts one to decide if the craft are still the better option for the basecoats/highlights/etc... for me they are 95% of the time better, as it goes on the same for those applications, but is again a fraction the cost.

Tam by teprve výsledek byl nějakým způsobem zajímavý a možná překvapivý. Srovnávejme přibližně srovnatelné a ne úplně nesrovnatelné.

There will be posible making a video explaining how you use the isopropilic alcohol for removing paint on minis?? A 5 min explaining will be awesome. Thanks for your videos ❤️❤️
@Zumikito3 жыл бұрын
That might come in the future, but it's literally like explained in 30 seconds - I dip plastic minis into a jar of isopropylalcohol over night and go over them with old toothbrush in the morning.. That's it!

Something else aswell is to keep the thing your holding it in and having it on something like a washing dryer taped down, the shaking causes a small vacuum which will help shake off alot of the paint.

my miniatures look amazing compared to other people's miniatures (masterwork from hobby lobby vs citadel) so what's up with that?

I just finished painting my first ever miniatures, the elite edition start collecting box. I started out building terrain and have enough for more than 3 tables lol. My skill improved rapidly and have made some really great pieces. I bought into the belief that you couldn't use cheap paint for miniatures and ordered a starter set from army Painters. I have years experience running a 4 color process printing press and understand color very well. The first disappointment was how the paint mixed. Most paints are a mix of different pigments like fire yellow, or cardinal red...meaning they are a primary color mixed with some other pigments whereas the primary colors, yellow, cyan, and magenta are ...the pure color. The "special " paints mixed quickly just goes gray or brown and takes more experimenting to make good mixes and imo is less predictable than the primary colors. I painted the first with the army Painters paint and the lack of a variety of the same color was disappointing and not being familiar with the paint line had a hard time knowing what shade would be darker or lighter so I used the apple barrel paints. The second mini I painted was with them. I chose 3 different shades of red and painted a blood angels kinda scheme, I say kinda because idk the exact scheme, like thier specific markings and such and it came out pretty damn good tbh. The next i did the same but more the grim dark style using a oil wash I made from cheap oil paint and again..nice. Now I next tried the imperial fists and discovered quickly i didn't like yellow paint, any mixing results in...yuck lol. I striped off a lot of paint doing yellow but started playing with understanding and started getting good results but really not my favorite style of painting. I just really like mixing colors and I think one pigment paints or oils are going to be good for me but life has bankrupted my hobby money for the foreseeable future and will have to wait. My long winded point is, the cheaper paints do a lot better than you think and i wasn't blown away with the more expensive stuff, certainly not worth the price imo, overall. Way more important in getting quality brushes, a fine pointed brush that holds more paint.

Instead of buying a ton of cheap crap paints, how about buying a few staple colours from good brands, mix in between tones, and add new paints as you need them?
@Zumikito3 жыл бұрын
Sure, that can work - also, buying just Kimera Kolors will cover your needs for 95% of the stuff (they don't have metallics though)

The real question is how hard is it to get paint out of that amazing beard??
@carlostroncoso44753 жыл бұрын
I tried the same with some super cheap acrylics I bought at a dollar store, because I'm so poor I have to sculpt my own miniatures. I got to the same conclusions, they are usable with very poor coverage except when it comes to durability. They'll come off at the slightest touch, so much that you can'y use washes or drybrush.

Okay, I believe you do like the good paints but if needed you can use any paints.. I have had to use the cheaper DecoArt paints.

Why not include some middle of the road paints like Folk Art and Apple Barrel? I think they'd do better than super cheap paints.

Crap acrylics usually airbrush really well with proper thinner and flow improver. But brush painting - no comparison to Kimera.

I ruined 3 of my Breacher Tau Units trying to use cheap hardware store acrylics (El Greco color assortment). They have much too thick consistency, and thinned down, they failed to properly disperse (like in 3:11 it remains grainy and uneven), or they fail to cover and adhere to the miniature. DO NOT believe anyone (looking at Ninjon) who claims cheap paints are viable; even the best will struggle with them.

The reason your blue + red is turning brown is because you need to use a Warm Blue and a Cool Red to get the purple you wanted! Ultramarine blue + rose red will make bright purples
