After coming out as bisexual, Amelia Meigs thought that the LGBTQ community would welcome her with open arms. Instead, she experienced a series of microaggressions that almost made her change how she looked in order to fit in.

Only fairly recently have I pushed though an “I don’t look gay enough” phase. The queer groups on my collage campus had a rough patch of belittling bi and cis people and I felt that I needed to look more non-binary and gay to fit in. I had long hair my first year of college and I ended up cutting it for the main reason of “the gays all have short, gender nonconforming hair”. I’m currently growing it out because I basically cut everything off a few months ago in hopes of rocking a lesbian undercut. I still wear a lot of flannel and converses but I’m realizing it’s because I like them, not because it’s a queer stereotype. This video really hit close to home with me and it’s a story that isn’t being told. The LGBTQ+ community isn’t perfect. It isn’t an amazing safe haven. It has it’s flaws. Once we realize those flaws exist and stop sweeping them under a rug of “everybody loves each other!!!” we can actually move forward and make progress.

my ex girlfriend had a very similar story of being called straight passing. so sad that we stoop to the level of assumption based off of a visual appearance even though that can be so detrimental to people of the lgbtq+ community. you’re very strong for telling this side of the story!!

the reason the lesbian said she wouldn't hit on her in a bar is because she was too scared to offend a straight woman, as she thought the girl was straight even tho she is bi. many straight women get offended when lesbians hit on them as they think they must look 'gay', therefore masculine.

It’s odd how it was an LGBTQ+ club but they didn’t really know what being bisexual was

Great testimony! A very necessary voice to echo the discrimination that happens within the LGBTQIA community and our rather superficial society.
