my mom was originally born in Kyoto...... I hope one day we can get her one of these houses one day. My sister is an archeitec and has renovated a house that set a new record for how much it was sold for..... I know one day by your help we can one day make this a reality, thank you so much your videos are very professional and very educational. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for the compliment! From how it sounds, your sister could definitely consider renovating a machiya here in Kyoto. Buying & renovating in Japan is not as hard as before with more companies willing to work with foreign customers... at least in the bigger cities. Again, thank you for watching and I'm hoping to add more videos that cover different aspect of renovating a machiya or kominka in Japan.

What beautiful homes! The stories they would tell if the walls could talk. I adore the inner gardens. So tranquil! Just stunning!

Great video! I would love a deeper dive into every aspect of every building. Particularly, show how the doors and windows move. Maybe even use a measuring tape to show off dimensions and profiles. I am a wood worker / architect in the states and I am always trying to study the detailed construction and function on the various aspects of Japanese architecture.

Thank you! Yes more things can be and should be explained regarding the architecture and its history...I'll try to make the tours more informative!

Thank you Luna! These houses are gaining popularity among younger generations these days but still many (especially in rural areas) are just decaying with time without owners...

@@GoodOldHousesJapan That’s sad actually. But I really hope that they will gain enough attention and eventually get new owners. Maybe I’ll have the chance to buy a house like that in the future! But till then I’ll look forward to more videos of you :)

II am in the process of planning my own house, which I hope I can build at the end of this year. I have always been thinking about building a house like Kyomachiya, since my plot of land is somehow like Kyomachiya (mine is 5m x 26m) and I usded to live in Japan for several years. Do you have any video showing the structure of Kyomachi, like the foundation, drainage system etc?
@GoodOldHousesJapan3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chinh, that sounds like an exciting project. There are some books in Japanese that has very detail information on the Kyo-machiya structures, but in English & Online this pdf file is the closest thing I can find. kyoto-machisen.jp/wmf-machiya-project/library/pdf/onoya-restoration.pdf (This is actually the machiya that was shown in my video.) Hope this helps.
