Something that I don't see addressed in many hard rock mining videos and that is why, if there are so many good exposed veins, would a miner branch off into other paths? Instead of stopping and clearing out an entire vein, I notice a lot of branching off. Is that just to assay the value of the entire region earlier on?
@MrSteveHarford2 жыл бұрын
Yes - but also because only 1 or 2 guys could work a small vein at a time. So with 30 veins exposed they can have 60 guys working - economy of scale.
@PunCraft2 жыл бұрын
@@MrSteveHarford ah , thank you :)

I have seen many mines where the original tunnel is only mined out in one single direction. If the vein continues upward and downward, then a modern miner can certainly come in and mine other sections of vein. Some areas are so faulted that there can be spider veins emanating in many different directions.
@PunCraft2 жыл бұрын
@@ColoradoGoldCamp Thank you for the response. I've seen some single direction mines as well but they have all been relatively large diameter opening and shallow depth. I guess that would be the "one rich vein" type of location vs. the spidering you are prospecting?

will a metal detector get set off even though you don't see the visible gold?
@ColoradoGoldCamp2 жыл бұрын
Yes and No. If the ultra fine gold occurs in clumps/veins connected then a very sensitive VLF metal detector will detect it. The rock could have lots and lots of microscopic gold in it but if it is not continuous/touching the detector will not detect it.

They used to mine on to untanned hides back in the day. I found a stack of them frozen under a dump I was sampling above treeline. Oh boy did they stink when they thawed.
@ColoradoGoldCamp2 жыл бұрын
Interesting Jon. That would explain pieces of remnant leather that I have found in old workings. In this particular mine, I found old heavy canvas pieces here and there. Figure the second generation of miners in this mine used cavas tarps.

If you line up the court crystals or the courts properly when you rub them together I think it’s called peso electricity and you can actually use them to see in the mine. I should say when you get the molecular structure lined up properly on both pieces they’re kind of square structures. I gave so many sets away maybe I’ll find another send them to you. Used to get quart crystals at this one spot a single crystal would be as big as a 5 gallon bucket. That or would run one to 5 ounces a ton. Have friends that got a vein that’s like a 35 foot wide exposed to the surface it runs from 3 to 27 ounces a ton! They’re not worried about it they don’t need the money it’s just a hobby for them. Good luck ! Are you going to Arizona think I’ll be down there in the first part of the year maybe we could swing together there’s a bunch of us out of all been mining for 40 or 50 years

Oiled with sweat you mean. Looks like slave labor with benefits. I think it's real nice that the old times left such a nice entrance into their mine for you and even more important lots of gold ore too. As I recall you don't have to go to the gym to workout, just become a gold miner now I see why. No need to go so far back if you just work your way back. Where did you get all your Geological education?
@ColoradoGoldCamp2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely right CM. I typically lose around 10lbs every mining season while eating much more food. As far as prospecting and geology goes, I am mostly self-taught. I did take a college class on Landforms which really seemed to resonate with me.

@@ColoradoGoldCamp Thanks for the info. That would take a bit to self-teach but still a good way to become knowledgeable about Geology. Maybe I will sit down a digest a Geology Book I bought I purchased recently to improve my chances especially in Colorado where mostly fine gold is available.
