Thank you for making this! Anosmia is very over looked and people don’t realise how much of an impact it can have on your life. As someone with Anosmia I feel I can say that people don’t often see it as serious which for me is quite upsetting as at the end of the day, we don’t have access to 1 of 5 vital senses a person should have 😓 people always complain about bad smells and take it for granted, I’d do anything to have a sense of smell 😖

We take many things that our bodies do for granted. We don't truly appreciate what we have until it's lost. We should be grateful everyday we wake up for all that we have, will have, and what we will lose. You'll never know when you're going to lose it.

I was born without the sense of smell, seeing this video and reading the comments, gave a feeling of hopefulness for a split second, because I no longer felt alone, but it was fleeting, because there are so many layers of me that make me different, as well as others, can't help but to feel abnormal and different, that makes me feel broken, and broken makes me feel alone, and that lead to isolation, because it's easier feeling lonely because you choose to stay by yourself and alone(makes you feel like you have some type of control over yourself) than to be surrounded by others but still feel alone, thats true loneliness. Plus when they brought up the smell of their children, i think my heart shattered and im now forever traumatized after realizing ill never know what my daughter smells like, but others will, so a whole part of her is missing..

I have congenital anosmia. Been advocating for the recognition of this condition too because when I grew up...I had no one to turn to. I used to feel like not many people could understand. It affected me in many ways. I couldn't tell others because I learned that a barrage of questions such as "but can you taste?" or "Are you sure?" would ensue. Now I raise awareness about anosmia so no one else feels they are alone. Glad there are more videos such as these. Thank you!

I was able to smell and taste life until I was 48. Its been almost three years now and I don't remember my wife's scent, favorite cologne, the ocean, my favorite foods, the humid air just before it rains, fresh cut grass, fire wood. Even my memory of these smells are gone. Losing my sense of smell feels like when your watching a food show on TV and the chef says how good the food smells and tastes but your not able to smell because its on TV. That's how I feels, like your not part of the world anymore.

Well, that's more because you lost your sense of smell, it's not applicable to people born without it, as we detect taste much better, we just don't detect flavour. There's a hefty difference.

Ok so I cant smell anything except for a very very very strong mint but mint is picked up by different nerve endings. However I can taste perfectly fine. I can taste the differences between foods and flavors (except things like skittles and fruit loops but nobody can taste the differences in those since its just food dye) so I have no idea what's up with me. I'm assuming I got nerve damage when I was a baby but idk

I can feel when i go outside after a heavy rain i am able to notice how clean the air is. I recognize chemicals just because i can taste and feel it in my mouth and troat. I also noticed i dont like to breath out of my nose, kinda pointless for me :P at least i can taste smell, if you know what i mean.

I was born like this. It was strange to have no one to tell me and to have discovered it on my own. I consider myself to have 3.25 out of 5 senses since taste/flavor is 75% due to smell. My other senses are definitely heightened though. I always wondered why I didn't remember much of my childhood, it was due to anosmia. The biggest thing is I don't believe I ever go into a sub-conscience state instead I am in a consistent state of consciousness which I believe is a bad thing. Always being aware and never being able to let go.

@@Daesma999 It's real! Certain odors stimulate the trigeminal nerve, causing us anosmics to "feel" the scents in our noses, giving us the illusion of being able to smell. Mint is one of them. @@johnatanskyzer6152 Thanks for your reply, that's interesting! It confirms my suspicion, that covid causes only a loss of smell. It's just that you perceive it as a loss of taste, because, when you eat, you smell the air through your mouth. I'm saying this as someone who goes back and forth between smelling and not smelling due to a chronic sinusitis. Deodorant doesn't really taste of anything, it just smells. That's why licking it doesn't do anything for you. I hope your sense of smell will return, I feel with you. I haven't smelled at all for years and am really happy when I do, such a source of joy. Try Umami flavors, by the way, many chinese and korean dishes are hot and umami and offer interesting textures. All things that you are likely able to perceive. The best of luck to you!

I have congenital anosmia due to having Kallmann syndrome. I still can detect certain aromatics or caustic substances such as bleach or vinegar due to the activation of the trigeminal nerve at the back of the throat but that is more of a sense of taste rather than smell. It is a system that is totally separate from the normal olfactory system. I am very sensitive to the texture of food for some reason which makes me a fussy eater. The other aspects of having Kallmann syndrome affect my life more than my anosmia but I think I have experienced most of the bad aspects of not being able to smell such as eating spoiled food, leaving the oven on too long and not being aware of personal hygiene and BO when I was teenager. There are some smells I perhaps would like to experience but it is not something I think about it every day. I think it must be worse for the people with acquired anosmia as they will be more aware of what they are missing out on.

I respect anyone’s approach to anosmia and the related sentiments. I’ve very seldom considered my congenital anosmia to be a burden. I suppose that for one thing, I can hardly miss what I’ve never enjoyed. In addition, my gustatory sense seems to be finer than the average person’s-perhaps that’s my body’s way to compensate, like a blind person having exceptional hearing. (A side note: I have won several wine-tasting contests.) On the negative side, I could never smell a gas leak, and there are other hazards I could never detect.

Your tongue can pick up tastes like sweetness, bitterness, saltiness, sourness, but without smell you can't pick up the nuances of the taste, the part that can tell the difference between different foods. For example, chocolate and a sugar cube would both taste sweet, but you might not be able to tell them apart otherwise.

That's not entirely true. I'm anosmic, and you've got the general idea right-- I can pick up tastes (sweetness, bitterness, saltiness, sourness), but not flavours. I can definitely tell the difference between chocolate and sugar, and even distinguish different kinds of chocolate. Reese's is one of my favourites :) As for flavours (which I can't experience), these include things like herbs and seasoning (they make absolutely no difference to me), and the different flavours in Skittles (they all taste the same).

Never been able to smell in my entire life and i am starting to hate it, not sure if i was born this way or it was due to surgery (cleft palate). It does have its advantages but i want to know what it feels like, even the bad smells i don't really mind. My anosmia makes me feel like a crippled person, wish i was normal. I am grateful for being able to taste though but i probably can only taste the basic flavours and wouldn't be able to hold tastes apart very well.

I agree that any one of your senses missing is an issue. But I also feel that losing the sense of smell is the one that you cold accept the most. It doesn't cripple you, it doesn't change the way you live your life, you don't (should'nt) feel outcasted. If i had to choose to give up one of my senses, it would be smelling without a doubt.

Girl Who Cant Smell GWCS I agree. Even I am a congenital anosmic. There are a different set of problems that we face. I can not detect gas leaks. Living in a tropical country where things perish soon I always need to get the food cross checked by someone else before I can consume.

Yes I understand that it mightn't be the same as losing sight but it's so hard relying on others to know if your clothes should probably be washed. I know this is old but hey I wanna put my two cents in. I would agree with you that smell is the best possible sense to lose as it isn't a great handicap in normal life. The drawbacks are in abnormal circumstances like fires gas leaks or rotton food. I personally have almost died due to not smelling smoke so there are drawbacks.

There was a gas leak in my bedroom in the 8th grade and I kept passing out but I thought I was just super sleepy because I couldn't smell it. Ive never been able to smell anything for as long as I remember an I got half agree. I don't know what it feels like not to smell things, so it's not something I miss. Of course it would be interesting to know how certain things smell sometimes, but it's not a problem for me, not to know. I also don't sad, that I can't smell things or something and I'm totally fine with it. The only thing that is interesting to me is the smell of nature/ rain so if I had the chance to smell something, I would pick nature/ rain because to me it's interesting what it smells like, but honestly I don't care about all of the other things that I can't smell. And let me tell you, people are complaining about a bad smell way more often than they say that something smells good, maybe they just mention it more often, but it doesn't bother me not to smell a bad thing... (I hope, you understand what I mean...)

The way you guys talk about this like it’s all about the smell like are you serious? I feel nothing! More like dead feelings, like it’s more above just sniffing things, it affects emotions, I don’t know if it’s just me but I haven’t fallen in love like more like a messed up life. I lack empathy unless I have to put myself in that situation to feel what that person feels. Makes intimacy bland. When I'd eat food I imagine what it should smell but it was a total illusion, Eating is something I had to do because I needed to, not because it I’m an enjoyable experience, like it’s way more than just the smell, it messes with feelings, can’t even smell a woman’s hair or scent that’s crazy then what should I miss about her when she’s not there? What’s even love? Mom would call she’s sick I would totally forget most times she have to remind me,not that I don’t care I learn to do better, maybe mine is different but I have dead feelings.

I cannot small, I lost the ability a number of years ago. But I can taste food, maybe not as well as I could with the ability to smell. The silly thing is my sense of smell used to turn on and off now and then. This was at random most of the time. But even then there was one thing that I could do to bring my sense of small back and that was if I jumped onto my motorcycle and go for a ride. The moment I drove over ten miles an hour the ability to smell would return. But now day even riding my cycle riding will not cause it to return. Now days a couple of days a year the sense of smell returns for a minute or two several times a year. It is almost shocking when it does kick in. But it do enjoy it when it does happen.

I have anosmia. At first I had hyposmia but I just ignored it until I started to notice that it's getting severe day by day. By the time I showed up at the doctor I was already a victim of Anosmia. I just want to say this to all those people who can smell things that please take a good care of yourselves. Only a blind knows the worth of the eyes. And lastly I just want to say that I don't know why the society doesn't care about anosmic people, we don't want sympathy but just a little compassion will do. It's as same as losing any other sense of your body. Society cares for the Dumb, Deaf and Blind and all other physically challenged people but not Anosmic.

I have over 40 years of memories of what things smell like. Then a cranial concussion robbed me of it. I'm still kind of angry that the hospital didn't ask me or tell me this could happen. I did notice it a week or two later, but thought it would sort itself out over time. It did not. So I had to research it on my own, and once I knew it was due to nerve damage, I understood. Broken nerves Do Not grow back. Well not until Sci-Fi "nano-tech" comes around, but I think I'll be long dead and gone before that happens. So, now, only in dreams can I smell - memories really - and related, when certain spray chemicals are in the air, I taste them and trigger the memory of the smell. But... it's false. Only a memory. I guess I'm glad to have four decades of memories though. I do wonder if this is not a bad thing … how aerial aromas were negative vs positive... and actually I think there were a lot more on the bad side. Being able to go into whatever horrible toilet imaginable is a plus I guess, but not being able to smell food gone bad is a minus. And Th Colonel Sanders Eleven Herbs and Spices, was once a treat for me, and now it's kind of "meh".
