It's no coincidence that the All Star game got significantly worse once Kobe retired. He was the last of a dying breed that wanted to win more than anything and he set the tone in the games he played. In his prime there were other fierce competitors like KG, Duncan, Pierce, etc... who were the same way. They all wanted to compete, show respect to the game, and give the fans a chance to enjoy the greatest pick up game ever played Near the end of Kobe's career, the new face of the league became someone who has cared about his personal "brand" more than anything. Lebron was more interested in avoiding anything that could damage his image instead of competing. A brilliant business move, but a depressing trend that he started and everyone followed. If the best player in the league can duck the Saturday contests and not try in the All Star game, then everyone else can as well. Fast forward and you now have an exciting young player like Anthony Edwards saying he sees the whole thing as a "break". The worst part is that these players who are so focused on their own worthless "brand" are simultaneously damaging the much more significant NBA brand that actually puts millions in their bank account. At what point does the NBA experience a financial "correction"? Mark Cuban effectively selling the Mavs as team values hit all time highs tells me that correction might be coming sooner rather than later

@@feynmanschwingere_mc2270 bro the players do what the teams want. Nowadays the playoffs are so important to players legacies that you are surprised they dont take non playoff or seeding games seriously. For years greg popovich tanked and load managed players while he was mostly praised. You think these teams acrually want their players to get injuref in the all star games and miss the play offs?? Bro its an arms race. When the 3 point line was first introduced nobody cared. Until teaks noticed 3points is better than 2 and everyone startef hitting more 3s so they would not be left behind. The same goes with injuries, health plays a huge part in winning playoffs so teams try to reduce the risk as mucj as possible and they are all trying to outcompete each other in health. The NBA has existed for so long that teans are always looking for the most efficient ways to win, be it by 3points and or by injury free. Thays why the modern playerd reflect that. Even big men are now shooting 3s, and resting players whenever they can to have an advantage. It does not mean i think its better for us (entertainment) just that teams will do what they can to have the best chance of winning. Its just common sense and deductive reasoning. The teams set the culture bro by recruiting and retaining certain types of players. They deem 3s as more important so they recruit morre players that shoot 3s including bigs. As defending is now much harder to do because of no hand check, referreeing and spacing, the importance of 2 way players as the main stars are reducing, ie steph, jokic etc. Its part of why lebron can play so well in his age. Now being able to score 3s or slash to the basket is now more important that mid range thays why u see young players having that in tbeir tool box.

I’d be down for just delaying the IST finals to the allstar weekend. It’d still be hype during the original IST for a team to prove they are the best in their conference. The only potential issue is that you are basically punishing the 2 teams that play at allstar break. During the regular IST it isn’t as big of a deal because everyone has fresh legs but by allstar people could really use the break. For example if the Sixers qualified for the allstar IST finals, they would be pissed going into the game with all of their players injured and potentially hurting the few players they have left as they are trying to rebuild their team to be ready for Embiid return to play in the playoffs.

They could take a page out of coaching/practice and change the Allstar game into a game of stops and play half court so the players can use more of their energy on the game instead of running up and down fullcourt. Teams only get points for steals, blocks, and defensive rebounds. If you score you switch possession and go on defense. If a team fouls the enemy team plays the next possession on defense (giving them an extra chance to score a stop). Some teams practice this way because it forces players to lock in on the important things like making good passes, taking high percentage shots and playing high level defense. Play to a number tennis style. First to 15 stops, win by 2. Break everyone into teams of 3 and play a single elimination bracket so the players that really don’t care can get eliminated in the first game, guaranteeing a fire semi/finals matchup.

By making the dunks worth 3 pointers, players won't let them get them that easily if they're trying to win, and can open the game for some insane posters. And having the midrange be worth more, then shots outside the arc will make it easier on the defense and require more skill offensively from the players.

Casey, here's how you fix the All-Star game. No players are paid any additional bonus money just for being selected as an All-Star. The losing team's players will each pay $1 million (or any other agreed upon amount) out of their REGULAR salaries to the winning team. For example, if the All-Star prize is $1M per player, then the winning team would walk away with a grand total of $12 million dollars (each winning player would receive $1 million a piece). But the money comes from their regular salary. There are no more extra bonuses. It's two teams betting against other with their own money! The NBA has already embraced gambling. So there is no moral conflict. But if their is a rub have the losing team donate the money to the charity of each winning player's choice. Thoughts?

There can be 7 zones to shoot from that would equate to a 3 pointer and every other shot is a two point play, that way the led zones are where the players would shoot from and it would require a lot more passing and movement. Option 3: Point per player: Every player who has possession of the ball gets a point. So if all 5 guys get the ball and then you score you get 5 points so literally each player represents a point value, if you can pass it to all 5 guys it is 5 points 4 guys is 4 points so it is literally scored based on the all stars making it the all star game. So if you drain a 3 from half court that is 1 point. Also passes have to be a wingspan length away so pick and rolls do not count. This is the most complicated idea but would be interesting to see how they would all play. All passes have to be in the front court for the point total to increase

Real quick, did we skip the "Rising Stars" game this year? 3 point contest was cool, dunk contest was pretty "meh", skill competition doesn't mean much (but props to my hometown Pacers anyway). Rising Stars is probably a more entertaining game than the actual All-Star game now, but I don't remember seeing that.

I honestly don’t mind, I just don’t watch. The modern day athlete is too concerned about their health(and rightfully so) for these games to be good again. Even if they find a fun alternative there is still going to be people complaining that it’s not like how it was back in the day.

How to solve fix the All Star Game in three steps: 1) Increase pay for players that have a positive +/- rating And decrease pay on players that have a negative +/- rating 2) Eliminate the 3 point shot. Make the rules pre ABA 3) Give players protective Gear to prevent injury. Shoulder and arm padding. And a stylized face shield. This may allow them to play tougher.

Thanks man. My first NBA game that I saw from the beginning to the end was the 94 All-Star game. You know, Scottie Pippen with pink shoes, Olajuwon and Robinson defend Shaq who scored 1/15 maybe. It was a great match. Now I understand why I did not see maybe the last 10 All-star games. I realized that they are wrong but don't know the backgrounds.

There are many things that they have to do in my opinion. it's not just one 1. Move the All-star Weekend to the End of the Season (yes, after the playoffs) 2. Divide the players in 4 teams, each one has a captain who chooses 5 players (or 6 maybe...you can add 4 more all-stars). 3. Give some sort of economic incentive. Why? As you know, players get more money if they make the all-star or an All NBA Team...so... instead of giving everybody the same financial upgrade, give them a Ranking value. Let's say: 4 teams 4 minigames of just one quarter The first and second quarters are like semifinals 3rd quarter is for the third position between those 2 teams that lost in the First and Second Quarter 4th quarter is the championship game Players will be able to get a financial upgrade in the next year of their contract depending on how good they made in the All-star More money to those whose team won and less to those whose team ended up last The MVP of the All-Star would be the best paid of the following season You say that money may be the problem...play with it

I dont understand why after all these years they still didnt add a 1 on 1 tournament on all star weekend. Probably the most popular fan discussions are who would win 1 on 1.
@hooptroopers10 ай бұрын
Wow that would be really interesting actually. Fans always discuss who's better 1:1 but nobody has any answers. Instead of silly event games, 1on1 tournaments during the all star weekend would reinfuse the game, giving fans material to talk about for years

You only consider it because you only want to be entertained but have you ever considered what would players feel? If they lost to that 1v1 game, their brand will never be the same after that. Social media would forever clown the losers to the person they lost to. It was never going to work.

I think why the all star game was killed, is the fans are more interested in the other content, like the 3Pt contest, Slam Dunk Contest, Celebrity All Star Game and more like the skills challenge and all that. Those things are keeping the all star weekend alive.

One good thing you can say about the all-star game is that it is a great show for the young (kids) fans. If you are a die hard basketball fan and enjoy the game for it’s technicalities, All-Star game is not the event for that. If you are new to the basketball « lore » and are just getting into the game, I think it’s great. It’s a great family show, not a competitive basketball event for adult fans who wish to see playoffs like performances
@JohnnyYeet123-sr8xk10 ай бұрын
The game itself needs some sort of incentive, in my opinion. Home-court advantage in the finals would be a pretty good one. Or perhaps a complimentary pick in the upcoming draft to be randomly awarded to a team on the winning side. Also, most of the events suck and need to change. For example, the Steph-Sabrina 3pt contest was a nice addition. They should scrap the skills challenge and replace it with a 1v1 tournament.

I miss the old all star game ngl they had no defense not only that but the regular season teams barely even have defense scoring almost like 130 points a game. This is actually why I watch college basketball trust me in the highlights there is guarenteed almost 2 defensive plays.

In Athletics, if you don’t give 100% on every play then injury finds a way to creep in. Strength conditioning plus playing to your full potential you essentially eliminate chance for injury.

I think another big reason is because injuries today are far more common than injuries were back in the 70s and 80s. Reason is because players these days, by the time they are 20, have already logged in tens of thousands of hours training and competing; the players are much more serious now and the lifetime stress their bodies have endured is far greater. The players in the 60s weren't training non-stop since they were 5 years old; they just played recreationally lol...
@ninocrown324710 ай бұрын
Define more serious? MJ and Kobe were known workaholics and have been they started playing ball. Nevermind they were intense 1-way players. Some of these serious players are trash on defense.

I have the perfect idea to fix all star: a 1v1 tournament winner takes all. Seating can be determined by popularity or randomness. Imagine you have 30 top elite players playing to be crown the king of the gauntlet everyone will want to participate and players will actually play hard.

I think the root causes are the crazy high salaries combined with significant incentives to not get hurt combined with impact on legacy. All that matters for their legacy are the number of all-star selections, not the quality of their all-star game performances. Post-season success is just the opposite. All that matters for their legacy is their performance in the playoffs, not the number of times they made it to the playoffs.

I've been saying these players don't want to risk injury to participate in the Dunk Contest. It's the same for the all-star game. They have far too much value riding on the performance of their bodies. It makes absolutely no sense to risk anything for a Dunk Contest or an all-star game.
@xdgagdbdfhs56210 ай бұрын
Not sure how much financial sense this would make from a business point of view…but what if there was an “all star game insurance policy” so effectively if a player gets injured during the all star game, the player & organisation are guaranteed to be supplemented any cash they miss out on or lose due to the injury

I remember Isiah Thomas said on NBA TV "if you are afraid of getting hurt, don't play sports". At this point, they might as well turn ASW into a fan meet and greet, maybe with casual 3 on 3 pickups. Fans might actually enjoy that more than the shitty ASW we have now

Thats the whole issue, and I think most people knew it. Players still get paid for participating in All Star games, but that pay is still chump change compared to how much they usually make. Before that money made a difference, but now rookies make the money that peak players use to. When they werent making so much, that money meant everything. Now its a drop in the hat, and because of that, I dont think the issue can really be fixed. What are they going to do? Exponentially increase the winning pool even further? Change up contracts so that players who make and win All Star games get crazy bonuses. Hell. Its always money. Its still insane that some players have deals that actively encourage them not to play to their best.

The NBA should put on a WNBA All-Star game before the NBA All-Star game, so the people still awake cheer loudly throughout the NBA game, as showing them how bad the game could actually be will make them appreciate the current mediocre game as it is. They should also put on a WNBA dunk competition right before the NBA dunk competition to make people appreciate the dunk competition more. Stef vs the chick in 3 point comp wasn't too bad though.

Honestly I don’t get your conclusion, that the increasing salaries are the problem. If a player gets injured in the all Star game, he still gets paid. Injuries have no influence on the salarie of a player (except you need to be in an all nba Team to earn more money). So why does the high salaries influence the all Star Game?

Idea for the All Star Game: Factor in Players box+/- contributions to the game. The top 3 contributing players on the winning team and the top contributor on the losing team earn the teams they are from a Bye and a Win. Maybe adjust if top contributors are on the same team. Its at the half way point. Later in the season. When the top contributing player's teams go head to head, they have the day off and their teams get a W in the column. They lose out on a scheduled televised deal, lots of arena revenue, and some upset fans looking g forward to a particular game...but make gains in making the all-star game competitive, watchable, more profitable. I'm sure they can move money around elsewhere. That's some incentive that might be worth hard plays one might get injured for...helping your actual team. Sure it's an * on a W but would also stamp who showed out for the rest of the season. Could a team slide into the playoffs with that W*? Sure, but a million other things could have happened in any of the other 81 games that could have changed an outcome as well. Shoulda had a good performing all-star then. Also control the minutes to even out the chances. Change of possession sub-outs of a player runs out of minutes. Either 20min for every player, OR 24min ea for your 5 starters, 18min ea for your top 5 reserves, and 15min ea for the last two reserves. Minutes restrictions would turn it into a whole other chess game for the coaches.
