I hated Trump in 2016, as many people did I bought into the mainstream narrative. so in 2016 I voted for Gary Johnson. A 3rd party candidate. I told this to my liberal Hillary voting 'friends' three of them called me a 'bigot' because i am complicit in getting Trump elected. Mind you, I live in heavily blue state. being called a bigot by exercising my right to vote as an immigrant now citizen by 3 white liberals was eye opening. I will NEVER vote for the Democrats ever. Trump 2024.

It's really cringey but I bought into a narrative that Trump would start world war three in 2016 and when he won, I got whiplash, I genuinely panicked and cried, then again I was 14 and very misinformed. But over time I saw that everything I'd been fed in 2016 was a complete lie and I watched dumbfounded as more and more lies pilled up. As a Canadian I cannot vote for Trump, but I really wish that I could. Meanwhile I'll be focusing on helping my country get rid of Justin Trudeau.

I looked into being a Libertarian because I have some pretty libertarian views. I didn't look for very long because that party is literally unabashedly open borders. I mean like open the gates and just let em flow through as much as they want and stay as long as they want. This in a country with birthright citizenship and a welfare system. What can possibly go wrong there?

I got excommunicated by the left as well, but the left isn't necessarily liberal so that's fine by me. Words have meanings, right? The only way I can be considered a "conservative" is that I want to keep liberal principles and standards as the norm. My friends are with me as we share common values that supercede loyalty to power. And blue no matter who is an idiotic way of voting.

You are right...we don't agree on everything. And that is fine. But we all should agree on a few basic principles. Here are three key ones for me: (1) election results must be accepted (unless a demonstrable fraud occurred), (2) when power is transferred to another individual or party, that transfer of power must be peaceful, and (3) fascism and dictatorships are bad. If we can agree on those, every other issue can be debated and addressed peacefully and openly.

I am a high school American Government and Econ teacher. Have been for two decades. last few election cycles I would have my kids take a political beliefs test called I stand with which asks a bunch of questions and tells you which candidate you align with. 2016, I had one young mexican girl get Donald Trump. She was literally ashamed of her results, tried to hide them from me and wouldn't tell anyone else who she got. She came into my class at lunch and asked me to *fix* her so she wouldn't get that result anymore. I asked her, why would I fix you? There isn't anything wrong with you. You believe what you believe and that's the beautiful thing about the country, you are allowed to think what you want. I'm a libertarian, but I don't wear my politics on my sleeve in the classroom. I feel it’s more important to teach dialogue than ideology, if you can reasonably articulate your beliefs while respecting other peoples rights, choices and beliefs that’s democratic, however the second it becomes (aka orange man bad) ad hominem society and educators in particular have failed us. Shouting sound byte slogans of contempt is the work of a brainwashed sophist not a truth seeker. Do they still teach Socratic methodology? or is that like critical thinking something tried and failed at in the 80’s I’d suggest people incapable of critical thinking could never teach it and looking at the modern educators I know allot don’t have the capability themselves, at least here in Canada where the professional colleges are getting troublingly fascistic in their top down edicts and politically partisan behaviours…..these behaviours have historical precedence (1920/30’s Europe) Julien Benda wrote a book on it called “Betrayal of the intellectuals”. The startling reactionary conduct of this new left makes the evangelicals on the right look tame. But to end this rant I’d like to say I’m glad I had a social studies like you who enjoyed good debate and believe in diversity of thought…..that man went on to become a university professor and doctor of theology but also managed to plant himself as the angel on my shoulder through my military service and that was invaluable (thank you Dr Prem Kalia) keep getting them to think for themselves and respectfully questioning everything…gen Z seems to be getting there on there own….likely seen enough already.

"We'll send that pretty plump white girl out to go door to door in the inner city. The brothers will love her. Wonder how long of a train she'll pull before they let her leave?" being just a sample. And, for they record, they approached her about going, solo, to the inner city to drum up support. But she wasn't as stupid as they thought and she said no. Her last two years before retirement were painful for her, as she simply couldnt wait to get out. One day she came home and said she couldn't stand the thought of working to full retirement age. I was raised Democrat growing up, voted for Bill Clinton in 92. Didn't take me long to realize that was a mistake. So from then on I was a third party voter, a cynical independent. I didn't buy the media narrative about Trump in 2016, but I did think he was Business as Usual. A smarter version of W, maybe. And the only reasons the establishment was really mad at him were a) he hadn't gone through proper channels first, by being a Senator or Governor or big city Mayor, and b) it was Hillary's turn, and how dare he fight against that. So I voted for Johnson. So what happened? The first six months of Trump's presidency, that's what happened. I was won over. I registered as a Republican for the midterms. Voted for and donated to Trump during the 2020 campaign. Saw the steal happen. I can't go back to being 3rd party now, no matter my frustrations. The Dems just keep kicking me, "No! It doesn't matter, there are terrible politicians on both sides. The Bush era was horrendous. all of them, and Rumsfeld and Chaney. McCain too. Dispicable neocons, and they all have gone to Democrat side like the shameless snakes they always were.

You can call it the uniparty, and somewhat that's true. There is still a difference between the two policy wise however, on many issues. The ideological bent of judges nominated to Federal benches is just one. Any good policy is only going to be had from the Republicans these days, and even then not often. We had great policy from Congress when Newt Gingrich was Speaker back in the 90s. Probably the best Republican Congress ever. We wouldn't have had that kind of legislation from Democrats.

I remember it well, and I don’t recall her ever criticizing Trump’s policies or the way he governed, just his rhetoric towards women, which is probably fair. Is she supposed to be shunned forever because she had a disagreement with Trump?

@@antipsychosoup6709 Very good reaction. Apparently one has to agree about everything with Mr disagreeable himself , Trump. The man falls out with everyone and everything. His policies were ok , but the man is a bonafide narcissist. You don't have to like the man to like his policies.

Glen Beck to his credit, saw President Trump doing a great job and admitted straight up that he was wrong about Trump. He did not make excuses. Mark Levin was pretty much the same. I hated Glenn Beck for that stuff as well. But when he admitted fault and apologized for being wrong then I accept it. They both have defended Trump for being persecuted and called out the lies of the left since then.

She is spot on. The GOP may be agreed with on many issues, but voting for them is impossible while so many of their top people are just national embarrassments who, even worse, have no comprehension of how to make policy.

I have been a conservative most of my adult life. I don't like calling myself a Republican, just a conservative. There is plenty of BS on the Republican side, and often they do not do what they promise, but I sure as hell can't go for today's Democrat party.

The best approach to voting that I have heard in a while. To many times in the last few decades I have voted for what I perceived to be the lesser of two evils. It has been a while since I voted for a candidate that I truly believe in. Hard to sort though what is fact and what is propaganda.

My uncle and I had this discussion yesterday in the opposite. What is making ppl like my parents leave the Republicans? He couldn't understand it. I'm like you don't win elections by ignoring the independents. MAGA can think there are enough votes or they were cheated making excuses all they want but the truth is both sides need to get back to the middle.

I would never claim to be a democrat but the very first time I voted, in my late 30s, was for Killary (primaries), then Obama. Why? As an active duty NAVY member, everyone warned me AGAINST McCain because he was not veteran friendly. I did little research but what I found was his voting record against veteran programs. I wasn’t involved or followed politics so I didn’t know anything about the establishment. That first time voting woke me up a little. Living in the DMV, I saw how gentrification hurted certain communities. I saw how the wealthy was getting richer while the poor was pushed out. So in 2012, I voted for Romney and ironically, Bongino was on the ballot too. Regret that now. I didn’t vote in 2016 because I couldn’t vote for Killary and ‘I didn’t see’ Trump denounced the racism the media showed at one of his rallies (I didn’t know it was an edited clip). Seeing how the media were constantly attacking Trump and everything he did compared to how they treated Obama, that woke me up completely. I learned how the media plays for one side and now they are not afraid to show it. And as the saying go, once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
