Into the Wardrobe

2 жыл бұрын

Today we're adding a new video format to the lineup, called "The Shallow Lands." In these videos we'll take a break from the regular lore and theories to discuss Narnia news, big questions, and even talk with special guests. Hope you enjoy!
Not since the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was release have I been this hopeful about new Narnia content! Will Netflix take advantage of the new series format to tell Narnian stories in greater detail? Will they add to the existing canon and create new stories all together? What can we learn from Lord of the Rings, The Mandalorian, Wandavision, and the Mysterious Benedict Society in all of this? What would C.S. Lewis want? We'll talk about this and more in this new format we're calling "The Shallow Lands."

Aslan resurrecting is alone a direct allegory to Christ, and highly important to the plot. Unless they completely skip The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Magician's Nephew, The Last Battle, and the direct mention by Aslan that he is God in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, that doesn't leave much room for stuff to adapt lol.

@@midnightbloomofeorzea7182 It's actually not an allegory. Lewis makes it quite clear in several places that he was writing speculative fiction, in the mode of Science Fiction: what if God made multiple universes. Aslan _is_ Christ, as He appears in Narnia. The point being, that if He had to die for each world in order to save its inhabitants, He would.

As far as I understood about Aslan, he is the spirit that lives in heart of children, Netflix can't deviant much from that, if they do, they will destroy his purpose and meaning in the lore, and Narnia world will not work. Aslan it's the anchor of story.

I'd like a series on the history of Calormene, particularly the idea that if they're an empire, what smaller countries did they conquer? What cultures did those countries have? It'd be an interesting way to flesh out that region of the map more, and make calormene as a conqueror more ruthless while also showing that not everyone who lives there is 100% evil.

One factor also needs to be added to your list. In my 1991 doctoral dissertation "Myth and Icon: The Cosmology of C. S. Lewis' Space Trilogy" I discovered for the Trilogy what Michael Ward later discovered for the Chronicles in Planet Narnia. The distinctive atmosphere (what Michael calls its "donegality") for each planet is crucially dependent on a pre-existing set of ordinate responses established by the classical mythology associated with the god from whom that planet gets its name. One of the reasons Lewis insists there would be no more than seven stories is that there only exist seven planetary donegalities. To create a new Narnian story which would seem to fit in with the rest would depend upon somehow creating a new donegality. To my knowledge, there is no Uranian, Neptunian, or Plutonian donegality, although one could abstract the kind of factors Michael and I point out in the existing Lewis stories; i.e., a color, metal, animal, plant, jewel, note of the musical scale, emblem, etc., for each planet. But the corresponding atmospheres don't already exist in Western literature. Robert E. Martin, PhD

Super great ideas!!! All of yours are brilliant and I completely agree, I would like to add a few: 1. A series, or at least a few episodes, dedicated to the Calormenes. How did they get to Narnia in the first place? Where did their conflict with Aslan's country begin? How did they learn of Tash/how did the demon creature first speak to them? 2. The Hose and His Boy aside, I would love to see more about the reign of the four Pevensies during their time as Kings & Queens of Narnia during the Golden Age. Let's see how they explored new lands, conquered other peoples, and watch their love for Narnia grow so that by the time we get to Prince Caspian, we understand their real loss when they come upon the ruins of Cair Paravel. 3. The Chronicles of Narnia series should make Tash their "big bad", who has his talons in the whole series from the beginning. Going off your Tash videos, maybe he was from Charn (which they could talk about in a Charn spin-off) and he slipped in during The Magician's Nephew. Then from there, he convinces the White Witch to take over Narnia during The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. Then, influences the Carlormene's in The Horse and His Boy, lulls the Narnian into submission under Miraz's reign during Prince Caspian (and maybe influences Nikabrik's desire to resurrect Jadis). Then, his influence is more subtle in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, though his temptations are still felt, only for him to be the one behind the Green Witch in The Silver Chair, leading into everything that occurs in The Last Battle. If he is this dark, evil lord, then the series should use his influence as such. No matter what happens, the Christian influences on The Chronicles of Narnia should remain in-tact, and the other pagan influences should be explained by Aslan in-world so not to conflate the two worldviews as equal. This can get confusing in the books, and so a better explanation in the live-action adaptations would be nice. Anyway, keep up the great work!

While it would be tricky to do well, it might be possible to extend the ending of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe to cover Queen Susan's visit to Tashban, including the daring escape. I would say that another rule should be: -Take your time Don’t try to get multiple books into a single season. Make 7 seasons at least for each separate book. Even for the shorter stories you should just have shorter seasons and focus on refining the story for that season. Just have faith in your work. If the show is good and done well there will be millions of viewers tuning in every season excited for what could be their favorite story in the series or perhaps a story they never had the chance to read growing up. Let us enjoy each book and believe in your work to let it stand on its own instead of trying to jam in another book that you have confidence in being a bigger success. Each story has its own flavor and all of them together make a wonderful dish. If you’re serving ice cream to friends and you know some like chocolate, some vanilla, and some strawberry although you don’t know who likes which flavor you don’t put them all in a bowl and mix them into one flavor to serve😄. You give your guests the option to try and choose any of the 3. Also it’s fine to skip over unnecessary details. The LOTR books as filled to the brim with details but the movie trilogy trims the fat and is considered by many as one of the greatest and iconic movie franchises in history. But you don’t need to rush. It’s important to have confidence in your product and find a good balance between keeping us engaged and interested without trying to get to the finish line as quick as possible. Doing that can cause writers to ruin the world and characters they crafted and be even more damaging than dragging a bit. I didn’t watch GoT but a lot of people I’ve asked were absolutely hooked till the final season and they felt the writers wanted to get to the end as quickly as they could. Now those same fans tell me I can still enjoy watching the show but they wouldn’t recommend it anymore because the ending rushed final season left such a poor taste in their mouth. Basically find real fans of the series who are also talented filmmakers. Not someone who barely remembers or “sort of” liked the books decades ago. Peter Jackson genuinely enjoyed and respected the LOTR books and wanted to create a film franchise that did them justice. When they wanted to green light him for one movie instead of two he rejected the offer despite passionately wanting to attempt the project. He claimed he thought that it would just never get off the ground at that point until the company they did work end up working with told them it should be a 3 installment franchise. LOTR was great at transporting you to the world and feeling as if the land and it’s characters were a real place you could go to with a real history behind it. A show lends itself FAR more to this advantage so PLEASE use it😄

The one thing I worry about the Netflix series is that they will change the meaning of the stories. There's a lot of Bible inspired characters and meaning to the books. And I believe that C.S Lewis was a born again Christian. He knew that Jesus came down and sacrificed Himself for our souls just like Aslan sacrificed himself for Edmond in the LWW. I believe that he wanted to write stories that has biblical meanings that are so simple that even a child can understand and want to learn more of how C.S Lewis was inspired by the Bible. I believe that C.S Lewis is in heaven with Jesus, and I cannot wait to see him when I'm called home from this world.

Calling him "born again" (I don't know if he ever used the phrase himself; I don't think it was common in the United Kingdom at the time) strikes me as out of keeping with what he generally expressed of himself, which is that, while he did believe, he did not think religious experiences, especially emotional ones, were necessarily good or worthwhile - the Space Trillogy especially emphasises "obedience".
@jimmymikula9353
@jimmymikula9353 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, he would have none about Christians being born again. A man who studied at the best universities in the world he would have read the Bible in both English and Latin. Which both record the conversation between Jesus and a pharisee. The pharisee asked Jesus what does a man do to enter heaven, Jesus answered him lest he be born again he cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. Being born again means that to live a Christian life we need to turn away from our old life. Just like Edmond and Eustace turn away from the anger, know-it-all, prideful, and selfish lives they had become someone new. C.S Lewis saw the world around him and would have seen these people acted in the way that Edmond, Eustace, and many other characters in the books. And knew that the lessons and principles in the Bible were important for life. Even the American constitution has biblical principles to run America right. So you do have good points about a few things. But the Narnia stories can always be traced back to the Bible, if you think of it as C.S Lewis thought you may see some principles hidden deep in the land of Narnia.

@@jimmymikula9353 He would have known the passage, but probably not have used the phrase "born again" (which is one possible translation of a passage in Greek that can also mean "born from above"; the New Testament was mostly originally in Greek, not Latin - the Latin version is a translation, and English versions often translations of translation). I wasn't meaning to say he did not believe in repentance (Edmond and Eustace are examples of that, but they do not do it as part of an emotional conversion, but rather out of understanding their mistakes, and through obedience to the conscience, which Lewis would attribute to a divine order; Eustace even understood WHY he was turned into a dragon, and his transfiguration back into a boy is actually physically unpleasant - remember Aslan physically rips off his dragon skin), but that he would not have called himself "born-again", which tends to be associated with the American Evangelical movement, and Lewis was not an Evangelical (which movement relies heavily on emotional experience, of which Lewis was deeply sceptical) by any stretch of the imagination.

@@ryuuakiyama3958that is true. I'm was just saying what being a born again Christian meant. Question Ryuu. Have you ever taken a close look into C.S Lewis life before he started writing the Narnia series? His mother passed away when he was very young, his father was not really in his life, he served in WW2 and lost some of his closes friends, he became a heavy smoker and drinker after the war, and turned his back on every his mother taught him about God because He did not heal her. When God convicts the heart of a person for things they did in their life it is a very emotional time. I personally have been convicted many time over the years by God. And when I got saved back in 2007 it was filled with emotion. The emotion of joy finally seeing God for who He is, and understanding why He sent Jesus to earth to die on the cross. C.S Lewis would have convicted heavily about his life. About his drinking/smoking addiction and his turning away from God because he was still angry that God did not heal his mother when he was a boy. It would have been a very emotional time for him changing like that, but after that day he finally ask the Jesus to save him, I wouldn't doubt that his closes friends and family would have seen a change in him physically and emotionally. Now, I'm not questioning your knowledge of Mr. Lewis at all. I would just ask you to think on these things in this way. And one more thing that I forgot to mention last night. Believing in Jesus means having a personal relationship with Him. Like a husband and wife relationship. Now I don't mean all this sex and lust stuff the world says is a relationship. What I mean is that He will always be there for us. We need help with something He will be there if we are going through a hard time emotionally He will help us. He personally helped me with some many things in my life that if I was required to pay Him back I couldn't do it. God does not ask for anything in return, we are not required to do works to get to heaven. That's what the priest in the temples in Jerusalem and even the Catholics say is the only way to get to heaven. God did not make C.S Lewis to write the books as a payment to get to heaven. I believe that God gave Mr. Lewis the passion to write stories that would point us back to the bible. I think of what Aslan said to Edmond and Lucy in the Voyage of the Dawn Treader. "In your world I have another name, you must learn to know me by it. That's why you were brought to Narnia. That by knowing me here a little, you may know me better there" Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Mr. Lewis wrote in a way that would have us stop and think what he meant by that. This is why I love Mr. Lewis works and cannot wait to see him in heaven with Jesus.

@@jimmymikula9353 Religious experiences often are emotional, however Lewis cautioned that they wouldn't be for everybody (one of his letters to his godchild tells her not to fret if she doesn't feel everything she thinks she ought to feel on her confirmation). I don't recall whether or not he left behind any record of strong emotions (I think I remember something about "reluctance", which is very different from what you describe, which sounds like an Evangelical-type experience, of which Lewis, at least as far as his letters and writing I've encountered, would probably have been sceptical). I don't, consequently, see any reason to suppose his experience would have been the same as yours, and still say calling him a "Born-again Christian" would carry implications that didn't mesh with the faith he reported practising. I'm also familiar with the ideas you're putting forth, and am in no need of sermons. As far as whether Lewis's stories point back to the Bible - I'm not sure I agree there. The Christianity he puts forwards is much more appealing than what's actually IN the Bible, which is, broadly speaking, a book of the time in which it was written, describing a human culture fairly typical for its time, now full of practices from which humanity has largely moved on. As a child, I grasped the religious symbolism in his works (I didn't know what "allegory" was - and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was a subconscious example; Tolkien, devout all his life, thought Lewis's allegorising subsequently was too on the nose, too). It also doesn't really make you stop and think about it unless you already believe. Otherwise, "Oh, this is a cool story; yep, there's the Jesus, now back to the swordfighting and talking mice and dragon-slaying." I doubt the books will do anything towards seriously converting anybody - if Aslan were real, that would be lovely; if Yahweh were real, that would be horrible.

Great video! I really like your 4 rules, I hope that Netflix sticks to them. I would suggest a rule number 5, too: Nothing in the series should be there purely for the sake of selling merchandise. I'm so glad you mentioned Charn at the end, I thought you'd overlooked it at first. I would LOVE to actually see the moment when Jadis actually says the Deplorable Word, particularly if the filmmakers can turn Jadis into a self-serving narrator and have the actual scene differ from her own version of it. My own take would be something like this, if the series used cold openings: SCENE 1: Nighttime. Flickering torches and shadows everywhere. A Classical-style temple, with a huge statue of a terrifying, many-armed and many-headed god dominating the room. At its feet, a very tall woman, JADIS is standing before an altar with a wicked knife trained on a young lamb. At her feet behind her is a chalk circle. In the centre of the circle is a skull with pure black darkness “glowing” from its eye sockets. She and her priests are constantly chanting - the more they chant, the darker and more intense the “glow” becomes and shadow starts spreading outwards over the circle - but it stays in the circle and never crosses into the rest of the chamber. In the background, muffled, are the distant noises of war: galloping horses, swords, shouts, screams of the dying. There is the whistle and boom of boulders being flung by siege engines. The doors of the temple sanctum burst open and a messenger runs in. He runs up to JADIS eagerly and is nearly impaled on the knife she swiftly points in front of his face, daring him to run in her presence ever again. She has brandished the knife behind her, without even looking up from what she is doing. He gulps and his Adam's apple bobs nervously, too close to the tip for comfort. JADIS: Speak. MESSENGER: They are here, Your High...er, Majesty! The rebels are at the gates of the palace. JADIS glances at the priests to keep chanting. They redouble their efforts. JADIS: And...? MESSENGER: The Qu...your rebellious sister is at their head. A smile of delight flashes across her face. JADIS: No doubt she wishes to cement my defeat personally. Her arrogant pride is her own ruin. It was ever so. Then she becomes all business again. JADIS: She will never forget this day. (She smiles darkly) Not for as long as she lives. She clinically kills the lamb before her without remorse or hesitancy. The skull, now “glowing” so darkly its shadow is almost pitch black, she picks it up with great care, holding it under her mantle and proceeds out of the room, followed two abreast by a procession of her still-chanting priests. SCENE 2: Outside the gates of the palace. A huge Greco-Roman monstrosity of a building, with gates that might fit the RMS Queen Mary comfortably. Too large and too grand for any person to feel at home in. Two armies are fighting in a vast Classical city, one side clearly losing, the other side with a column marching up to the gates under a Romanesque standard. Carried on a sedan chair is a stately QUEEN as tall as her sister JADIS but not quite as beautiful, but every bit as arrogant. The gates suddenly open and out steps JADIS, with her hands clasped over her front as if in prayer - concealing the wicked skull inside her mantle. The darkness emanating from the skull creates a deep shadow around her feet, so that all beneath her robe is in pitch blackness. The chanting priests follow JADIS in an arrow formation with her at the head. They redouble their efforts and chant louder and more fiercely. The QUEEN steps down from her chair, looking her sister directly in the eyes, not seeing what JADIS has concealed. They walk towards each other, their parties standing back. The two women are face to face. QUEEN: Victory! JADIS: Yes! But not yours. She reveals the skull and breathes in every last vapour of its darkness, which fills her own mouth and eyes now. All noise fades and SFX of tinnitus noise replaces all else as Jadis speaks The Deplorable Word. From her mouth, a white explosion blossoms and blooms outwards, covering the whole city and beyond. The QUEEN is wiped away just as her eyes widen and she understands what is happening. Right before she vanishes, JADIS remove her queenly circlet from her head. Every other living thing, chanting priests included, has now been totally vaporised. Every person, every plant, every animal, fungus and even insect has been removed from the world. There is no noise except the cold wind blowing. Placing the circlet on her own brow, JADIS smiles to herself. TITLE ROLLS.

I first learned about Netflix getting rights to Narnia from NarniaWeb so I was glad to see that you were talking about it, too. I am greatly concerned about what Netflix would do with or to Narnia. I'd be very surprised if they would abide by your 4 rules. I suspect they would modernize the stories and remove the Christian themes because of concern that they wouldn't attract a large-enough audience. I'm really sorry that Walden Media wasn't able to make any more movies because I still really enjoy the three they did produce. I like your ideas about expanding the Narnia stories, especially the Charn spinoff! But I'd add two: #1, I've always been curious about the 15 years the Pevensies spent in Narnia since the LLW doesn't expound on it; #2, add The Horse and His Boy to the list, which would fit in perfectly with #1. Congrats on the 12K subscribers, hope to see that number continue to grow.

The Horse and His Boy is my favorite Narnia book, and I think there is a lot of potential to crossover the ending of LWW with HHB. For example, some Calormen nobles could be present at the Pevensie's coronation at Cair Paravel. Then, instead of skipping directly to going back through the wardrobe, we could see them age a bit and visit Archenland, then age a bit more and play chess with the golden pieces, then age a bit more and plant the apple orchard, then age a bit more and visit Calormen--all setting up things that will be referenced and revisited in Horse and His Boy and Prince Caspian.

Even though my heart will always treasure the Walden Movies (and regret them being unfinished) and the 1990 SIlver Chair is a masterpeice (nearly perfect) which is why I love the story so much (I actually wanted to make a two part animated film at one point, that dream has been tossed aside)- and despite my concerns over Netflix doing injustice to the books, hopefully these shows and movies can be good. And wth adding new content (like how the video game "War in the North' added an original story to Tolkien's Legendarium) to the world, we can get new stories and characters. I mean it's kind of been done before, Orius the Centaur was made for the first Walden movie- speaking of which, it was cool that the Walden movies featured female centaurs. It would be amazing to see more she-taurs (or kenturides or whatever, so on and so fourth) especially as actual important characters to the narrative.

Congratulations on reaching more than 10k viewers. As regards to what I would like to see, I would like a mini series (spin off) on Tash and the Calormen’s but I think it would be interesting to only see the influences of Tash and not necessarily see Tash until the very end, and with the end while I think they should change the reasons slightly I don’t think Susan’s whole story arc should be changed. I would also like them to explore more of the times in Narnia Mr. Tumnus told Lucy about during her visit.

It would be awesome seeing Peter fighting giants with his army, Susan and Edmund's travel to Calormen, Prince Rabadash, including the story of Shasta, Bree, Aravis.. the Horse and His Boy book in the series. Imagine visually seeing Archenland, Tashbaan, the desert, and Calormen come to life. The fight at Anvard, etc. It would be epic!

The Horse and his Boy. To me, this book is a hidden letter to the love and art of storytelling. It’s a self discovery adventure that follows the lives and growth of the four main characters. This book is easily suited to a Netflix six-part series at minimum. There’s scope within the story to go as epic as budget allows. There’s many joyful comic moments but it’s not a Comedy. There’s budding romance but it’s not a Romance story. It also gives us a little more glimpse into the problem of Susan Pevensie and perhaps a reflection on Jack’s own struggles. The screenplay should be done by someone with experience in the old very formal poetic Arabic (‘Calormen’) mindset of storytelling - think Aladdin without the pop culture repartee - this isn’t Shrek and Donkey - think modern Shakespearean plays. It’s two mystery stories entwined and unfolding like a rose: 1. Beggar boy twice stolen, 2. Arvis’ story, 3. the Narnian mishap, 4. the Tisroc (may he live forever) and reflections with the hermit, 5. for Narnia and the Lion, 6. Rabadash makes an ass of himself. As a child I found this book quite boring (Prince Caspian was my favourite then) but it is now one of my favourites as an adult, writer (and subscriber to Netflix).

Oh my! You and I must be kindred Narnian spirits! I think adapting new characters or eras not covered in the books can be done but you need really strong writers who could knowingly incoporate said elements / people while not trying to tear down Narnia. I think an apt comparison altho with works by a creator who was the opposite of Lewis would be Lovecraft Country and how it smartly was able to make a story that tackled racism & had a majority black leading cast but at the end of the day was still science fiction & fantasy. Narnia can do the same and maybe have expanded stories with characters of color & more female characters but still be unique fantasy like the Narnia tales are. It should be fantasy and fairy tale like stories not so much Game of Thrones.

I am so glad you mentioned The Mysterious Benedict Society! I feel like it doesn't receive as much attention it deserves, and that it is a good example of how to adapt a book series to the screen. However, the best example of book adaptation to long-form streaming series is, of course, The Expanse. The writers of The Expanse knew how to keep the core plotlines and atmosphere intact while adjusting pacing, lengthening character arcs, and adding detail.

While I would love to see and read more Narnia, everything touched by Hollywood over the last 15ish years has been destroyed. Reportedly, Amazon has an intimacy coordinator for their LotR adaptations (nude scenes, anyone? Very Catholic, that. Very in tune with what Tolkien would have done.). Ghostbusters 2016. JJ Abrams' Star Wars and Star Trek movies. Star Trek: Discovery. The most recent Bond film. All of them set out to wear name of the old like a skin suit while jettisoning everything old fans loved and then chastising the old fans as if we had missed the point of the old. No, we didn't. The movie makers didn't either. They just wanted to destroy what is good, beautiful, and true. Cobra Kai has been an exception. Made by fans, it actually sticks with what made the original movies work. The upcoming Ghostbusters: After Life looks to hold true to the original. Not surprisingly, the writer is the son of the original writer. So, this marsh wiggle is not hopeful about the adaptation. In fact, I expect Netflix to go woke. They know of no other way to do things.

While I wouldn't put it past Amazon to get on the GoT bandwagon and add nude scenes to LotR, it's important to note that intimacy coordinators are sometimes hired for things as simple as kissing scenes. It's also important to note that nudity isn't automatically sexual. Also the most recent Bond film is the only one I've ever enjoyed, because it's the only one to ever have well-written female characters.

One thing I’d love toward the end is a retrospective on Susan’s story and how she fell from being a friend of Aslan and maybe add her finding her way back to becoming a friend of Aslan because it never expanded on her story ether way past the final book and as they say; once a king or queen of Narnia always a king or queen of Narnia.

Good ideas! It would also be nice if the target audience wasn't kids, or at least not JUST kids. Narnia could easily come close to TLoTR. Sure its a more magical land, more fit for fairytale type of stories, but the events that unfold are no less serious, difficult, dark... especially in the last battle where every sliver of hope is systematically cut down. After all, I'm guessing that most of the fan base is no longer young in age. Though extending the fan base is something to also consider, with new young watchers/readers, they should forget about the older Narnia fans that will bring the newer generations, into contact with these stories.

What I'm hoping is that we'll get more of Aravis's friend Lasaraleen - I'm hoping that it will end with her 15 years or so chatting to someone about how she was invited to Aravis's and Shasta/Cor's wedding and will fill us in on everything the book told us in the end - how Cor's a warrior but Corin's a boxer like no other, how Rabadash is called both Rabadash the peacemaker and Rabadash the ridiculous because I can hear her saying 'Ah, and to think I once said that I adored him I was such a silly girl back then', so that we can get the rest of the story and can see that she and Aravis remained friends because even though Lasaraleen is a bit shallow and superficial the life she has is the one she wants and I think she was a good friend to Aravis ie helping her escape though she couldn't understand why. Also if they hint that she still visits Archenland to see Aravis then it would show that not all Carolmeens will are evil which is what the book risked doing a few times. In that same light I see us getting some more information about what happened in England after Diggory and Polly left Narnia through them writing letters to each other, ie Polly swearing that she saw the tree move that morning even though it wasn't even windy and that she wonders if it means that something's happening in Narnia and how good the apples are and that she'd bring some with her the next time she comes to visit him and how much better Diggory's aunt looks now that she doesn't have to look after Andrew, and Diggory writing back about the various books he's been reading (hinting at his future as a professor) and how he thinks that Andrew might be starting to think about people other than himself but how when some friends came over for dinner the other night he heard Andrew talking to a few of them in the other room about a foreign queen he'd once met "He had the sense not to tell them where she was from, I don't think they believed him anyhow though"

I really do hope they do Narnia justice! To see the other books come to life on screen will be amazing, but only if done right. I always thought if adapting The Magician's Nephew how cool it'd be if the story Jadis tells of how Charn became in the state it is, we see it visually as she narrates it, that would be so exciting! I also agree seeing Rillian's quest laid out would be awesome for The Silver Chair. I also love your ground rules. For as much as the last two films of Narnia veered off more than I'd have liked, I do still enjoy them because they did not tamper with the heart of Narnia's core and values. Aslan was kept completely in character, and I was so happy The Voyage of the Dawn Treader film kept my favorite line in the book, which I was scared they'd cut, about how in our world he is known by another name. I think that should be a rule in and of itself---keep Aslan as Aslan, messing with his character would ultimately destroy Narnia. Nevertheless, I am hopeful for this series, because if done right, it'll be spectacular! A perfect way to discover Narnia all over again and expand upon the lore.

Great video, and I definitly agree with your ideas! I'm extremely excited to see how Narnia is visiualized for Netflix... no matter how well the story is done, I think with Netflix's track record, having a beautiful world and graphics is guarenteed. I honestly think the best bet with the adaption is follow the books as faithfully as possible, but then, as you mentioned, expand on the in between, and backstories of the characters. Personally I've always been super interested in Charn, and I also think there is so much to explore in the golden age of Narnia. I think they could do well releasing a season per book, as that would allow them to cover all of Jack's originally laid out stories, as well as having the room to expand on them (I actually think it would be a good idea to add in more plotlines at once, as that lends itself better to the TV format). I would be especially especially excited to see the Horse and His Boy and The Silver Chair adapted in this format. While I am definitly wary of this adaption, one thing that does give me hope is the Series of Unfortunate Events show on Netflix. It is genuinely the best book to screen adaption I have ever seen, and it was extremely faithful to the books while still adding elements to the story. The Chronicles of Narnia has such a distinctive and unique feel to it that I hope the show can capure in a way that the movies did not.

I have always felt that Susan's story after The Last Battle needed to be told. I know that at one time a woman questioned CSL about it. His response was that he didn't feel it was a story he would/could tell, but gave the woman permission to try it herself. As far as I know, she never did. But I did. I've never been so impassioned about a writing project as I have this one. I was led on a journey that I can't fully say was totally my doing. Ideas for this book came to me during the night. Twists and turns I never saw coming developed as I sat at my computer. By the end, I was thoroughly satisfied with the outcome of Susan's life story. I believe I held to the rules you laid out in the video. It was paramount to me not to change anything that Mr. Lewis had written - but just to give Susan a chance to tell her story based on what transpired within the realms of her knowledge of Narnia and Aslan. I wish there was a way to get it published - but at 67, I would need to live well into my 90's if the Chronicles ever does make it into public domain. (BTW - it is in PD in Canada - the problem comes in selling the book outside of Canada would not be permitted.) At present, my only hope is to leave it to my children/grandchildren to be published in their lifetime if possible.

All very good and interesting points to think about for the series. I was thinking about making some videos on Netflix's Narnia adaptations. One video for each book in the series to focus on and what they should do, shouldn't do and what I would like to see them do with the books. I do really like and agree with all of the ideas you have mentioned, but there are some other things that would be pretty great to see happen too. By the way, I LOVE your videos and keep up the wonderful work!!!

I'd like to see a subplot about the real-world (UK 1950's) friendship of all the "Friends of Narnia", between The Silver Chair and The Last Battle, especially their regular meetings. How do these characters connect, support each other, and cope with real-world issues and struggles after having been to Narnia? And is Susan really drifting away from the others, or is she just "finding her own way back". ???

Remember they all died except Susan who wasn’t at the station ( or on the train, I can’t remember which). I always wondered what happened to her going forward. I like to believe that she found her way back at the end of her life.

They could also show many stories taking place in the Golden Age of Narnia while the Pevencies are still growing up as kings and queens at Cair Paravel.

I'm so scared Netflix is going to crap on Narnia. I completely agree with your list of suggestions here (especially with Lewis' Christianity). In our society today, Christianity is more and more looked at as exclusive or narrow-minded and I know they're going to be tempted to tweak these things about Narnia. If they do it will break it. Also, I'm usually totally against people adding to an author's story in any way (especially if they are passed and can't have a say. in it), however, I think your suggestions are great.

I really like the idea of Jadis as a focal point to bring something fresh into the LW&W. I also like the idea of spin-offs, but not limited to Charn. Instead, using the wood between the worlds and creating new content that resonate the works focused on Narnia. Knowing the universal presence of Aslan in all worlds (but known by different names).

A lot of people are talking about extra-canon possibilities, but the most important thing is that Netflix adapt all seven books FIRST. We have never had a live-action screen adaptation of The Magician's Nephew, The Horse and His Boy, or The Last Battle. We need these stories to receive a proper treatment before new stories are told.

We haven't. I think starting with The Magician's Nephew would be like taking a new turn. Both BCC and Walden adaptions started with The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. So yeah, The Magician's Nephew would be taking a new turn, because we haven't seen on screen before.

Just found your channel and enjoy all videos about Narnia! This video about Netflix Narnia- project is great and I have a suggestion for you about this, you are the best to do your own fan- casting of the series! I would love to see you do a video when you cast the characters on your own, like Bryan Seeker do with MCU, Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings! I so looking forward to see more videos from you and especialy my suggestion!

They could do so much with narnia for example a prequel with Jadis and Charn. Also explore more of the countries of Calormen and Telmar and how some of the Telmerines became cats and dogs. Plus the unusual islands and lands in voyage of the dawn treader. There’s so much potential with Narnia and to still keep the spirituality and Christian values alive. Looking forward to seeing Uncle Andrew, Jadis, Bree the horse, Puddleglum, Aslan and so many others make it on the screen. Please do it justice Netflix.

The silver chair and last battle are my favorite books. However it was magicians nephew that really hooked me into how deep the Narnia world was. Charn would be so amazing to see before the deplorable word was spoken And yes. - seeing uncle Andrew as a child would add to the color of Narnia. I also agree that a longer prologue before Lucy enters the wardrobe needs to be told - and the transformation of Narnia between the death of the Apple tree and before Lucy enters Narnia I’m not sure how it would come about. But the merging of LLW and horse and his boy - as they overlap in timeline - it would be a great way to show the entire world of Narnia ans the different countries The entry of the tallmarines from our world to Narnia - and the backstory of miraz power lust. And how and why old Narnias went into hiding

I'm all for expansion over replacement, too often do I see shortcuts being taken in order to "keep the story fresh" by cutting and replacing instead of expanding on certain elements. Netflix did have the amazing (yet tragically short-lived) Dark Crystal series which did expand on what the original film couldn't, however, other projects had a bad habit of going off-book (no pun intended) because they believed the stories needed "maturity" so I'm a bit hesitant to reinstate my membership for now.

I hope who Adamson finishes the Narnia moves, because there are still four left. And that even Netflix decides to make a complete series on this wonderful Saga. Do you know that Lewis used the latin name Narnia, a city in Umbria in central Italy that is now called Narni? I'm from the south of this country instead. Great job, and see you soon. 💖💐
