Every part of Malaysia has different laksa. If you order laksa in state of Kedah you'll get different type of laksa than you just eat. The one you eat is laksa lemak or nyonya laksa which is popular in state of Malacca and Singapore. Northern part of peninsular popular with asam laksa or pineng laksa or laksa utara. Using big white rice noodle specially made for laksa. Broth taste sour but refreshing made from mackerel/sardines fish and no coconut milk. Laksa Johor is another different laksa using spaghetti and not soupy like the other laksa which you could eat with hand. On east coast of peninsular there is laksa kelantan and laksam. The broth is made from fish but added with coconut milk. Laksa kelantan used the white noodle lasa while laksam use flat white rice noodle. Laksa Sarawak is another different type of laksa.

@@ChovyTravel you cant always find Laksa lemak but something similar would be Mee Kari . All laksa will have fish based broth (either shrimp/mackerel or both) . Mee Kari might not have fish based broth sometimes its just chicken broth. Its still a great substitute for laksa lemak practically everything else in it is almost the same spices/ingredients.

That sugary dried cuttlefish snack is one of my favorite childhood snacks, especially the spicy version. It is not uncommon that the local food is heavily influenced by its neighbors namely thai and Indonesia. Maggi is the most favorite instant noodle brand , Mamee is another. You might like assam laksa koreans usually liken it to Kimchi-jjigae. That said the sourness comes from Tamarind and not kimchi.

Haha, I noticed you keep on mentioning the sweetness of our desserts or drinks is not there, to me americans desserts are too sweet. Mamee lontong instant noodles are the best. If you cook, Try to bring some fried chicken flour from malaysia, bestari brand.. My american brother is crazy for it. Try dodol if u can find it. Mochi texture, taste like molasses? But its made from coconut milk and our melaka sugar.

Yeah 😅. It’s definitely my American tastebuds that want more sweetness. We are actually leaning towards SEAsia drinks though nowadays. For some reason, the drinks out here taste more clean and refreshing. American desserts and drinks are really sweet/very rich. Too much for us too at times. Really!? I'm fresh from a one-week debate about laksa on TikTok. I'll elaborate here, keeping in mind also as Asian Americans you probably know noodles pretty well. Laksa dishes like all other noodle dishes are categorized by their noodle types and broth types. Strictly speaking, laksa noodle is a thick rice noodle and that's what's generally meant when we say "laksa". So if a noodle dish uses any other type of noodle, it can't be called laksa. It's kinda like Japanese noodle types; we don't call an udon dish "ramen" when udon is used because the noodle ingredients are different and the broth used also depends on the noodles used. But noodles aren't the staple food for Malays, so there have been some innovations in the noodle department where some regional laksa variants use wheat noodles (Kuala Kangsar) or wheat spaghetti (Johor), but we let them slide because their broths are fish broths. (Using wheat noodles means the laksa variants are new-ish because even until now Malaysia still doesn't grow wheat.) But curiously the Chinese folks in Klang Valley call their curry noodles "curry laksa" even though they use egg noodles. In the rest of Malaysia we just call them "curry mee" where "mee" stands for the yellow egg noodles used, and generally for us curry noodles are in a whole separate category away from laksa. (While curry broth seems flexible in the way that it can be used for any noodle type, fish broths are usually only used for laksa dishes hence the leeway for laksa Kuala Kangsar and laksa Johor still being categorized as "laksa" even though they don't use laksa noodles.) Those are egg noodles in your video, so I'm sorry to tell you that what you had was curry mee and not curry laksa. This isn't even my personal opinion, it's on Wiki. 😅 As for laksa broths, their bases are regional: - Northern peninsula Malaysia (Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak): asam laksa (tamarind and fish broth); Malays use fresh mackerel, Chinese use canned sardines. Penang Chinese asam laksa is the most famous and that's what people will point you to if you ask for asam laksa especially in KL. Chinese folks in other states don't make their asam broths as tangy as the Penang one, and Malay asam laksa has a much cleaner taste altogether. I keep distinguishing Penang Chinese asam laksa vs other asam laksa variants because a lot of Malaysians refer to the first as the default asam laksa (and that's what's sold nationwide in malls via local laksa franchises like D'Laksa and MyLaksa) while Malay asam laksa is called "laksa Utara" and non-Penang Chinese asam laksa is just whatever, so bear this in mind if you want to try them. All of these have their own local variants with different toppings but I won't get too specific. - Klang Valley (Kuala Lumpur, Selangor): Chinese curry laksa (curry and shrimp broth, with or without coconut milk). No Malay laksa. But as I whined above, it's not laksa if egg noodles are used. - Melaka: Nyonya laksa lemak (coconut milk and shrimp broth). "Nyonya" refers to "Peranakan lady", Peranakan folks are descendants of early Chinese migrants who married Malays and Peranakan cuisine is a category of its own. - Johor: Malay laksa lemak (coconut milk and wolf herring broth), very thick consistency like ragu paired with spaghetti noodles and eaten with your right hand (Johorian Malays used to make their own wheat noodles which resembled spaghetti so now they just use commercial spaghetti). - East coast peninsula Malaysia (Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang): Malay laksa lemak (coconut milk and fish broth), can be white or red in color depending on whether spices are added. In Kelantan there's another noodle type called "laksam" which is a rolled thick flat rice noodle (kinda like a thick chee cheong fun) paired with the white broth. That said, Kedah in the north also does laksam but with a hybrid asam and lemak broth (tamarind+coconut milk+fish which is actually Siamese laksa broth) but it's much less well known because the Kelantanese laksam is known as the default laksam. - Sarawak: laksa Sarawak (chicken and shrimp broth), thin vermicelli is used but it's a rice noodle so let it slide. 😂 Malaysians are used to refer to laksa by their regional names so sometimes we're not able to be descriptive about what goes inside. I've just had laksa recently where I tried to clarify the broth type and the server just said "it's laksa broth". I've seen vloggers eating basically the same laksa multiple times because the Malaysians they met recommended them without explaining the noodle and broth types. I know people mean well but it can get disappointing especially if you have allergies or dietary restrictions, or simply just that you have a limited time in Malaysia and you don't want to eat the same thing twice! Ok that's very longwinded. Happy travels!
@ChovyTravel
@ChovyTravel 5 ай бұрын
Wow! Honestly, I prefer Rice Noodles over Egg Noodles 😁 So Curry Mee, we like! I guess we have yet to try Laksa 😅 Really appreciate you taking the time to clarify everything not just for us but for other people to see! It definitely helps especially for us foreigners to better understand the truth about Malaysian cuisine. 🥰🥰❤️❤️🫰🫰🙏🙏

@@ChovyTravel I've had too many foreign friends telling me they loved laksa then I found out they only had curry mee with egg noodles. I don't blame them, but I think locals should know better than misleading people by selling curry mee as laksa when a whole ass laksa cuisine exists. You wouldn't see the Japanese branding their udon as soba and their broths are well categorized (that's why the Japanese vlogger couple iChang and Jimmy got so confused with laksa). So I don't understand this carelessness with laksa. I don't have anything against curry noodles, for me if laksa noodles are used then yeah call it "curry laksa". The thing is what's sold as curry laksa in KL is more often than not curry mee, and the rest of the country is tired with their behavior. 😂
