The restaurant has a "Good soldier Svejk" theme. He's a famous character in Czech literature and represents the powerless common man swept along by the political situation of his time, neither supporting or standing against events. The name of the restaurant is "At the balloon". I retired to the Czech Republic in 2006. People asked "Why not Spain? A few days visit in the Czech countryside and in the numerous unspoilt Czech towns and villages soon answered their question. Most of all, the Czechs were so friendly and helpful to us.

There is a lovely wee Jewish cafe/restaurant on the main designer shopping street just off the old town square. It’s not that long a street but it leads to the Jewish quarter. Maybe about 1/2 way down on the left hand side you would find the restaurant. The food is really nice in there. Also the continental hotel has really nice food - if I remember that is somewhere near the bottom just past the Jewish quarter. Prague is known for ‘pork Knuckle’ and if you like pork I think this was one of the nice (but messy) things they had. And obviously there is also Mac Donald’s, kfc etc on Wenceslas square. There is also a nice hotel on the square called something like the ‘cosmos?? It is on the opposite side from marks and spence and the restaurant is open on street level - the food here is also very nice. It’s quite a stylised hotel like a 60’s concrete block kind of build but is lovely. It stands out from the rest of the traditional style buildings. Really enjoy these Prague vlogs - like a walk along memory lane for me and a nice pace

Raw onions with a main meal that's a very Persian or Turkish thing. I had never seen that in other types of cuisine before. Looks interesting. 😊

Was in Prague a year ago and was blown away by how good the food was, every single meal. Was hoping you'd go to the famous butchers that actually cooks food and serves it in the shop, 'proper butcher's sausage'

We were there a few months ago - the food is very “meaty” and “dumpliny” but decent at the same time if you like meat. I remember that place with the small man outside but didn’t go in. A nice place though!

i had dumplings in slovakia one time and i was surpised they were called dumplings because they were these tiny pieces of cooked dough or something which resembled the look of grated cheese, I still want DJ to try the traditional czech pub food hermelin marinated in chilli oil

Of all you content, i like the food reviews the best. I havent had a dumpling for years - that brought back some memories. The lunch spot looked about representative of Prague. As for those cakes - im not sure how much time needs to pass before a dish is local. A visit to London wouldnt be complete without a good curry and a night in china town. You will enjoy the turkey xmas dinner when you are home DJ!

At least you tried the goulash. We tried it in Lublijana, Slovenia. Was served in a copper bowl hanging over a flame, it was full of tender beef onions and mushrooms very smoky with paprika and underneath the meat were two herby dumplings. Delicious! Think it's meant to be like a soup. You would like Slovenia, it's like stepping back in time. Just like your Canterbury.😄 I liked this vlog very much. Well done for travelling there alone 👍

Had a goulash in place leading up to castle . It was lovely with thick dark sauce and beef in huge chunks and so tender . Also think I was in your restaurant the day after , had a pork dish that had huge portions of three or four different pork recipes , amazing , waiter a bit scary , but every time he passed he left freshly filled beers on table . And the pre meal freebie kabanos were terrific .

Goulash is Hungarian and normally rich with two types of paprika. Looked a bit iffy to me. Amazed that the beer wasn't top notch considering where you are DJ.

Fair play to Darren for trying something. Shame the goulash didn’t quite hit the spot and the beer was warm. At least, on his own, DJ got off his backside and visited Prague over Christmas. Respect. I guess the white stuff on the plate were dumplings?

Yeah, I know what you're saying Darren. I've been to Prague once, and did try goulash with mixed dumplings. It wasn't amazing, but it wasn't too bad either, and I would have it again. Never had the chimney thing though, but i definitely will if I go back there.

there was so much sauce seemed like you should have fully submerged both sides of the bread to soak up all the sauce instead of just dipping, but looks great simple foods as long as its seasoned right and the meat is cooked long enough

It's traditional to eat this Czech meal with dumplings, but I guess you could have what you want if you asked for it. What you said is the equivalent to a Czech person saying "shame we couldn't have our roast beef with chips instead of those roast potatoes". Or hash browns with our sausages instead of that mash.
