I was a senior in high school when this came out in 1972. Everyone was playing this song and the girls were just eating it up and laughing their buns off. My what a fun time we had back then. We took it all in with a grain of salt. What memories...Chuck sure gave us all one to remember. Priceless!

@@degsbabe My senior class of 1972 just had their 50th year reunion. Cannot believe 50 years have gone by. Thank goodness I was born in the 50's to be able to experience the birth of Rock & Roll, the British invasion of the 60's starting with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. How the 60's ended with the grandest Rock & Roll festival 'Woodstock' back in (1969) ever!.What is not to like?

This was Chuck's first gold record. There's a long session where he teaches the audience to sing. The boys sing "Ding A Ling." The girls sing "I want you to play with my." You can hear it fairly clearly on this recording.

This particular clip is from Chuck's show at Lanchester Polytechnic Arts Festival, Coventry, England in June 1972, a week? long event featuring all kinds of music, from classical to Elton John. The audience is largely British students at the Poly (now a University). His show was filmed and recorded and instead of all his classic rccknroll numbers, THIS was the hit of the show. Pye Records released it as a single and it gave Chuck his first and only UK number One, it even kept Elvis' "Burning Love" off the top of the British chart. Before this he recorded essentially the same song as "My Tambourine" on his 1968 Frisco album, presumably because the record company didnt like the "rude" TingaLing lyrics. Ironically Ting a Ling was hated by the British rock n roll fans, the Teds etc, as they thought he wasn't staying true to his 50s RnR roots. But that's Chuck for you, always an entertainer, and never afraid to upset people.

Chuck's only #1 hit believe it or not. This came out in 1972(recorded live in London) 18 years after his first hit "Maybelline" came out in 1954. I think he had one more Top 40 after this with "Reelin' And Rockin' " also 1972.

I was born in 1971. When I was a little older probably 3 or 4, every now and then we would be going somewhere, usually on public transportation, I’d start off singing “when I was a little bitty boy….. and my mother would slap her hand right over my mouth…. If I kept singing after she took her hand off my mouth, I’d find her hand on my behind! Hahaaaaa She didn’t mind us singing it at home….. but in public hahahaaaaa oh the good old days!!!

Check out A band called Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show and their song called "Freaker's Ball" some time. Check out almost any song by Ray Stevens from the last 50 years, lol. Or Jim Stafford, or Bobby Bare. Hell, even Tompall & The Glaser Bros. had a funny one called Put Another Log On The Fire and Mac Davis' song, Lord It's Hard To Be Humble. So many other great ones out there dating clear back to the 50's with songs like "Baby Sittin' Boogie" by Buzz Clifford, Alley Oop by The Hollywood Argyles...
