I couldn't believe how I did it at first but I realized that my brain caught on quicker and I studied very very hard. Age is not a barrier if you do not think it is, in fact I think that my brain is sharper in some ways. I will be starting Calc 1 in 2 weeks and I am nervous but excited even more so! @LordZombieZanetta I wasn't gifted in math, but I suddenly fell in love with it (after studying Plato, and having a great math TA in college). I LOVED a text not used as often now, by Loomis. It trained my intuition so perfectly, I can't tell you. I have a very algebraic and logical mind, but decidedly poor spatial intuition, so Loomis was a godsend. I never once got a limit problem wrong, and I used to buy other books for more practice and do all those problems, too. Thanks to Loomis, I understood a lot of the three dimensional applications I would never have gotten otherwise. If Thomas had been our sole textbook, I'm not sure I would have succeeded. (I got all As.) 😊

This reminds me of that prisoner Christopher Havens who is serving 25 years, and never finished highschool yet during his solitary confinement started learning math. He solved some kind of problem that stumped mathematicians for a long time given to him by some professors he wrote to in a college. Now he teaches math in prison which allows him access to more math books as a reward.

If you want to learn Quantum Mechanics, you should approach vector calculus and Numerical linear algebra using computer codes from the very beginning. You can look at Mathematical Methods for Scientists and Engineers by D. A. McQuarrie or other books of the same genre to get you started. Additionally, learn at least one programming language like MATLAB, FORTRAN or Python whuch enables you to run your own QM calculations...becoz further down the road QM is not possible without implementing your DIFEERENTIAL EQUATIONS ideas through Numerical Methods..

Good video. I earned my last graduate degree at 44 years of age, so I know the feeling. If you want to do it, you can. Independent of age. It’s funny you brought up the French math prof. My major prof was an information / error control theory guy. Heavy into abstract algebra, signal theory, etc. All his PhD students were from all over the world. So one time we were talking about where the best math people were from. I said India, not a bad choice. He said no, the best math people were from France. I worked on several NATO jobs and worked with the French quite a bit. I couldn’t disagree. You know, there was that Galois guy, ha!

Then you have more knowledge to apply to new problems, so ... my last Master's course was in 2021 and I've done a few dabbles since then, I think I am ready now to try some more. Interesting, my next project is also vector calculus like your subscriber with a view to finally getting to grips with Maxwell's equations. Reality is there is a give and take as you age. My brain was on fire when I was on my 20's, and I had a very quick wit. But I had the patience of a gnat. Now I have almost inhuman levels of patience, but I'm not quite so fast to compute. Also you build contexts and broader understanding that you can lean on as you age that simply isn't there in youth. When you're young, it can make you feel like you can do impossible things because you don't consider the conditions you're not aware of. As you age you're more likely to see boundaries, but maybe less likely to veer off into something totally new. All told, I'm making more use of my understanding I've built up than I could have in my 20's. As long as I keep working my brain like it's a muscle, I expect to be able to continue taking the trades and doing my best.

It is fun to learn at old age. No homework just read for fun. Recently I read a DSP book , lot of Math but it was fun. I read part of Composite Structures book. Was fun . Taught myself Aircraft Stability and Control. Now I learned how Auto Pilot works, Yaw Damper, what are Stability Parameters, learned a lot about planes. I used to work at Boeing but was not familiar with this subject. This was amazing how they use State Space Method, etc . I started a QFT book, dropped it after 300 pages. Will visit again. Was fun, kind of nit picky math, not hard but requires a lot of other physics background. I am a child here . I am not in school, nobody is going to force me to learn something. I change subjects in midstream. My time, my interest, and certainly nothing to prove to others. Just Fun , as good as eating Cheese Cake my favorite.

I sometimes feel too old to go to college. Mostly because I’ve forgotten a lot of what I learned in high school: Algebra I and II, Trigonometry, Geometry, Thermodynamics, Physics and pre-calculus (only one I didn’t pass). I’ve raised 6 kids who are all adults now age 34- 18. I can do what I want. I’m planning on attending college with my youngest, she wants to be an astrophysicist or astrobiologist. I’m planning on taking biology, which she is taking as well. I’m practicing in the Dummies book for the SAT, which I never took, only the PSAT, which was around 1300. So I guess it will all come back to me! I’m hoping! I’m already a trained auto mechanic… but it’s too easy. lol

This spring, I went on a two-month binge on Khan Academy to learn algebra. It got me through entrance exams into a university of applied sciences. I’m studying mechanical engineering now and will need a solid foundation of math skills for strength calculations of machine parts. People say ”it’s never too late” and I’m like ”I’m not THAT old” but my class mates were mostly born when I had already graduated and served in the armed forces so I guess there’s a bit of a gap there. I'm a 41 yr old neuroscience student (taking calc and physics) and absolutely loving it. As far as grades, I'm actually doing better than many of my younger classmates. Not because I'm brilliant, because I put in the effort. That's what it boils down to. Yeah the age thing can feel a little weird at first, but I just decided I'm too old to give a f*ck lol. It's never too late and I have just as much of a right to be there as anyone else!

i am 37 years old going on 38 next year and i made the decision that i am never too old to learn something new and once i become 30 years old i decided to become a musician and study music theory and sound engineering. I learnt the maths and science and physics behind sound for sound engineering and learnt synthesis and sound design for music. i now have my own recording studio at home and i play and record music for a hobby doing old skool late 50's, 60's, 70's,80's and 90's rock n roll music covers and i also make my own midi digital monophonic piano musical instruments ! so never say never guys ! always believe in yourselves ! you can do it ! anything is possible ! :)

Thank you, I needed to hear this now. Keep on sir - you’re truly helping/ inspiring learning, growing latent, undeveloped/underdeveloped minds, like mine. And, you inspire belief for utilizing math in the world, in addition to the pure joy/ love of learning.

I think career-wise I'm done with learning because I already spent so much money to get a bachelors in math and a masters in accounting and it's just too darn expensive. I may be able to get certifications here and there but that would be it. And the CPA has far too much material to memorize, so I gave that up and decided to just study recreational mathematics instead. But I'm surprised how in my 40's I'm still able to learn mathematics I didn't know before - material more difficult than I've attempted in the past. Of course I don't have a prayer of catching up to Riemann or anything, but I'm happy I can still be better than I was.

in my 40's I went to night school for math & physics, while working FT+ in software consulting. I did not consider myself good at math but worked at it, and made friends with people who were better at it than me. It took a while, more than 4 years, but got a Bs, magna cum laude.

I am going to be 60 in a few months. I was never good at math, which made chem and physics pretty difficult. Now I have the inner discipline to try and do well. I want to go through math, up to the diff-eq level, and then get up to successfully completely Physical Chemistry. I definitely want to be a lifelong learner. Thank you so much for the encouragement. It really means a lot!

As long as you're not dying today, pick a book and start studying. There's no age for learning Math , physics or anything else . Don't make excuses because they're not helping. Read and learn , because the world need you so much more than what you think.

From my experience, math in uni is stupid because they dont teach me how to create a function, instead they tell me calculate and prove something bull shit as theoretical view point . but i have a better viewpoint from physic, programming, and stimulation. It said , just applied math, just do fucking it and when i do as the advice , i realized , math can be described as manny forms according Human cognition. So math in uni just a general version of smt have been proved or widely applied such as determined a formula from data analytic or computation view point basically the same . It turn out, my approach is wrong when seeing math in uni is a standard for logical . My POV here want to aware old person who might observe a event once in life , so it could be used to approach math and any science field . The word and definition might change but the philosophy isnt , so is it too late ?, well the answer is no , but job opportunity is yes. Because we living in a society build on money and competition .

while one can study at any age where you are still able to learn, you have to be real about it. You can no longer study all day until 2am and get up at 8am the next day for classes for weeks on end. This limits how much you can learn in a prescribed time frame. In University settings the bar is high.
