They weren’t pre-famous, as in, formerly a famous rapper, daughter of a big celebrity, former Disney Channel star, etc. This whole new scene, to me, seems like celebrities cosplaying as Pop Punk artists that will ditch the scene just as quickly as they cashed in on it. It's funny because the rock story is usually something like "I gave up everything in my life, even became homeless, to pursue this dream of being in a successful rock band. My band mates and I couch-surfed for years until we were finally signed" And the rap music attitude is more like either flaunting riches, success, and fame, or even PRETENDING to have those things until you finally do. Great to hear such a nuanced explanation. Here's my two cents. I grew up in India and went to a boarding school with a massive rock culture so completely understand the cultural paradigm. Green Day was actually my gateway band into rock and everyone around me hated them so I understand the feeling. There's a generational shift here though. I don't think Gen Z really care about the disparate cultures anymore. I understand Slipknot acquiring legendary status but they haven't been mainstream relevant for years and it's something that a lot of us wanted. I'm so sick of listening to the same rap by 17 different new people every month. MGK is a douche but maybe that's the kind of mainstream attention rock music needs. A little controversy goes a long way. I don't think he's going to be the godfather of this new wave of pop punk but he's a start. Hopefully, better acts will follow that are more inclusive, less controversial, and with more meaningful lyrics. We could get back to the 00s with all those great bands but with a different cultural and generational attitude for the 2020s!

He has always had rock influence in his music and didn't "Change genres because Eminem killed his game lol". He had M Shadows from A7X on his first major release. He has had guitars on his records. Travis performed on his 2019 album Hotel Diablo, where he also has a tribute song to Chester Bennington of LP. He's had a live band on stage for years, so it is just him doing something people in his genre are too scared to do and did it first. The whole current explosion of Emo and Pop-Punk revival mixed with hiphop (jXdn, kennyhoopla, Avril's comeback etc.) is because MGK went #1 with Tickets to My Downfall. And even that record has hip-hop influences on it like electronic drums, guest rap choruses, and the way that some of the drumbeats and production are approached. Facts are facts. @luke_cohen12 жыл бұрын
Two things about MGK and his place in the music scene: he was a rocker that switched to rap and then switched back to rock and that he clearly knows that a tradition is only as useful as the times dictate it to be. I'm also a rock fan that spent 8 years listening to rap (2013-2021) and I do think that experience in the rap world holds a lot of lessons for rock fans (MGK's statements on the rock scene clearly define this dynamic). One of those lessons is that traditions are useful as long as they don't hold you back. If they do, get rid of them because they're likely holding others back as well. Plus, you should generally respect your elders but that respect should disappear the minute that elder attacks you in an unprovoked fashion (the Cardinal Sin of Corey Taylor). These ideas and the artists that support them should be listened to because rap and rock could learn something from them. Rejecting them just ruins each scene's objectivity and critical thinking skills and makes it more difficult for either scene to truly dominate the mainstream as the firebrand for pop culture.

Corey was supposed to do a verse on one of MGK’s track, but being a songwriter himself, Corey didnt like the lyrics that were already written for him and so he decided to back out from the track. MGK didnt like that, and so he proceeded to start said beef. Corey’s comments about MGK tbh are perfectly fucking valid considering Corey has been in the business for over 2 decades, producing legendary songs and albums, compared to MGK’s pitiful career. MGK hasnt produced anything that can be even compared to the quality that Slipknot and Eminem have produced. He really needs to learn to make better music in whatever genre he’ll choose to go to next, rather than starting beef with the biggest Artist/Group in said genre. If you wanna argue that MGK is talented, go and search for his cover of SOAD’s “Aerials”, and then listen to the original song. He is a plague upon the entire music industry itself.

@@Lioness257 It's a joke about the lack of star power and entertaining personalities in current rock music which lowers the genre's sales as a whole. Plus, anytime a rock band/musicians tries to pay the bills with their music, the fans deride them and try to destroy their career (which ruins any career prospects for newcomers). Rock's decline in popularity is it's OWN fault. Not anyone else's and It's going to need outsiders to get the genre back to the top of the charts. Here's a thought for rock fans to ponder: a healthy genre is one that doesn't require it's biggest stars to hold day jobs. They should be able to pay their bills through their music career alone. Plus, a healthy genre is one that doesn't allow an artist or band to climb the ladder of success and then pull the ladder up after them to prevent others from doing the same.

06:02 “If he’s a clone of Blink, and you like Blink and the other Blink clones… Why don’t you like his music?” This is something that gets terribly overlooked when discussing MGK’s cross over to Pop-Punk, and it’s the reason I don’t like it… It's actually not good. Regardless of who made it. It sounds like every 14 year olds first pop-punk release just with 100 times better production… It’s not a ‘Blink Clone’. It’s simply the most basic elements of pop-punk done without any personality. It’s like A.I created pop punk songs, featuring Travis Barker (which is a release I wouldn’t be surprised to see in 2022). You have to remember that we are over two decades removed from “What’s My Age Again” and “First Date”. Blink had moved on from that to the likes of “Asthenia” and “Not Now” in such a short time (with the BCR album in between), and the impact that Blinks ‘Maturity’ had on the genre is immeasurable. Pop-Punk evolved so much over the last twenty years that even the Blink Clones that existed pre ‘Travis Barker-Core’ had moved beyond your basic C, G, Am, F and trite lyrics that make up the entirety of ‘Downfall’. If ‘Downfall’ was released by ANY other artist, it would still be among my most disliked pop-punk albums because he added NOTHING to the genre except dumb facial expressions and a few tabloid headlines. And the same goes for almost all the other ‘Barker-Core’ acts. The simplicity and, frankly, setting-back of the genre by 20 years shouldn’t be overlooked because the one guy in the big band from the 'golden age' who didn’t write the music or lyrics is whore-ing himself out to these guys. Travis drumming on sub-par pop-punk songs doesn’t lend them an air of authenticity, I’m sorry. It just makes sure that bad songs have good drums. 17:35 “The way he carries himself is much more like a rapper than it is a Rock Artist” I think he carries himself like he’s unaware that Nirvana are about to come along and render him irrelevant. He was in ‘The Dirt’ and is friends with Tommy Lee… The 80s Hair scene was all about being the Alpha, having status and not wearing comfortable clothing, and Rock hasn't been in any way like that since people realised you could be a rock star while wearing ripped jeans and a check shirt back in '91. He’s trying to perpetuate the ‘sex, drugs, rock n roll’ attitude in a post me-too, social media ran world. I wouldn’t say he’s ‘outside the culture’ because of he acts like a rapper… I’d say he’s ‘outside the culture’ because that caricature of a “self centred, narcissistic, loudmouth” Rock Star was laughable even before MGK was born and he seems to be completely unaware of that.

He got annoying. Fast. At that point, I still wasn't a fan, but I at least respected that he was getting people into rock music. Even to the smallest degree. He got his fans to leave their comfort zone in a lot of cases, and I thought that was cool. But any of the respect I had went away when he started speaking on behalf of rock music and the scene in general. It felt like the new guy at work giving you advice on how to do your job a few days after he started. I was kind of just listening to him, thinking "who the fuck do you think you are?". I for the most part ignored him after that. Until Riot Fest. I was planning on at least catching his set, to see if maybe I was missing something. I was already going to see Slipknot a few days later, so I didn't mind missing them. MGK was not great. He didn't sound great, he had a shitty attitude, no one was really getting into it with him. Then the stupid "weird masks" thing happened. I felt the same way as i did when he spoke on behalf of the rock scene. This time it's the new guy at work telling the guy who's been there for 25 years how to do their job. I officially couldn't bring myself to even bother with him anymore. A lot of people there felt the same way. I eneded up catching the 2nd half of Slipknot. Now with this whole beef and the constant lack of self-awareness, I'm just more sad than anything else. He should be doing damage control, but instead he and Corey are just fanning the dumpster fire that is the beef. As of now, I just hope that the new generation of rock fans MGK brought in doesn't think that shit like this is normal or wanted and we don't see this happening more and more in the years to come. It would be a huge bummer. But that's just my personal journey with him. Feel free to open a discussion with me. I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts.

@_denzoned_ I'm not sure if you understood the comment I made. I was not saying that he was bad for making his album. It just wasn't my cup of tea. More my point was that he was telling people who have been making a living from rock music for far longer than him that their uniforms are incorrect and pretending like he's the savior for all of rock music. He was the new guy telling the veteran how to do their job. He's also not a "young kid" nor is he doing anything too over the top innovative. So my opinion has nothing to do with "what the kids are doing". I actually listen to a lot of new music from artists who haven't been around since 2010, but are a lot younger. I'll say again that I'm stoked that he brought a new wave of rock fans, but I don't agree with the way he carries himself while he tries to be the face of new rock music. But go off.

This was a great video. The one thing I personally would put differently is that I would call the core value in rock authenticity rather than tradition (although respecting tradition is also a big thing). You're supposed to use real drums, play live, wear comfortable shoes and black jeans, etc. because those things are seen as markers of authenticity as opposed to being fake or contrived.

Great point man, well said 👍

I would argue against that definition, only because triggered drums, synth, and extra effects (Periphery doesn't have a full strings section but that doesn't mean Misha doesn't add them into their songs) have been a part of rock music for the last few decades. There are those that still don't like those things, but I would argue that they don't like them because it's not traditional, not because it's inauthentic.
@skippy86962 жыл бұрын
@@boxofnicecrayons Just an example, but I remember The Berzerker getting a lot of criticism for allegedly using a drum machine (if you listen to their music it does sound inhumanly fast). Not using a live drummer or speeding up the drums in the studio is basically considered 'cheating' in metal. A friend of mine at the time refused to listen to them because of this. This is what we mean by authentic. I'm not sure what you mean by synths...things like keyboards or? I've never had an issue with this. My favourite black metal album (In The Nightside Eclipse) is littered with keyboards -- it really adds this creepy and evil vibe to the music.
@boxofnicecrayons2 жыл бұрын
@@skippy8696 there are certainly purists who shun triggered drums still, but it's become much more commonplace. I do not mean keyboards, I mean synths or digital add ins - going in to whatever recording program they're using and adding, for lack of a better term, beeps and boops lol. I remember a big argument against nu metal bands like Linkin Park having a DJ was that it wasn't a "traditional" instrument for rock music.
@skippy86962 жыл бұрын
@@boxofnicecrayons Fair enough. Artists have been doing that since the '70s. Dark Side of the Moon, one of the most iconic albums in the history of rock, uses a lot of synths and sounds added in the studio. Rumours by Fleetwood Mac, which (in my opinion) is the greatest rock album from that decade also used synths. By the '80s, it had become pretty commonplace. The whole issue with the DJ in the group, which is a nu-metal thing in general, comes from that elitist/gatekeeper mindset where nearly everything nu-metal bands do is wrong. Turntables and sampling started in hip hop music and many people didn't like the idea of it crossing over into rock/metal although looking back on the culture at the time, it was kinda inevitable. If you want to make the argument for something being against tradition, you have to ask why something is a tradition in the first place. In the case of DJs, is it simply a culture clash or something a little deeper i.e. the idea that hip hop music is lowbrow and requires little to no talent (something I don't agree with). Idk, people can make up their own mind. Either way, tradition and authenticity can be used interchangeably here.

If people knew what Punk is, they would laugh at the idea of Pop Punk that came in the 2000s. I absolutely love this dialogue. Thank you for sharing this! I've been in the goth subculture for a little under a decade now, and the values have a lot of overlap within the overall rock sphere. What is really valued within the goth scene are intelligence & education (many people within the scene are highly educated and hold multiple degrees in a wide range of fields), creativity, authenticity, "finding beauty in darkness" as a philosophy, and respecting the rock on which goth was "born" (depressed looking collage kids in DIYed thrifted clothing whining about how much they love Morrissey and Robert Smith lol - I'd be a hypocrite if did not admit my own vices here haha). Something very interesting about the goth subculture is how much it intersects with queer culture as well. Many queer people (trans friends, NB friends, Bi and gay friends, Drag performs) fit right in and feel a sense of comfort and safety within this group. When Baby Goth "came on the scene" very many people within the scene got extremely angry and hateful towards this woman. I still view her as industry plant, trying to invade a place where she clearly had no authority to authenticate herself as "goth" when she was posing with weapons and drugs. Is there a place for hip hop and rap in goth? Yes and no... it all depends upon how you assimilate to the culture and norms. Baby Goth failed miserably because the industry she was planted by had no sense to understand what "goth" is outside of KILLSTAR. Aesthetic does equal comprehension of values. Basically if you act like a creepy ass regardless of gender or sexual orientation, you are booted from the club or server you are on. There are a lot of great artists & groups such Skinny Puppy who implements elements of Hip Hop (Industrial; not exclusively a "goth" thing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIm3Z36ojZKDfJY) OhGr from SP has employed similar techniques in his own work. I think these elements being combined with goth are extremely healthy to the subculture growth and well-being. I'm sick and tired of people claiming that "Oh! Goth is dying!". No! It's not! We just had a major post-punk revival during the 2010- now, continuing. And Artists/ Bands such as Drab Majesty, She Passed Away, Daughters, Have a Nice Life, VOWWS and Gile Corey are helping to change that portion of the landscape. These groups are respected because they maintain the essence of goth. That is where hip hop/ rap influence is kind of falling short at the moment. I'm open to people learning and sharing different perspectives. That why I enjoy the new group of "E-kids" because its a new sub group of counterculture, which should be more respected for what it is. Still these kids are not really goth, sorry E-children. I'm excited to see the influence of sound-cloud rap "goth boys/ girls" impact and how this may change things. Hopefully they'll have a far more positive influence that stays true to goth values without erasing the roots importance. :)

To an extent, I agree, but I also think those values are going under significant changes right now. And they're not the only ones playing around with new sounds in the rock genre. I feel like tradition has been a core value in rock and metal, but that those values are changing and we're in the midst of a tussle for dominance. We're talking like 1 or 2 or 3 or more shootings every weekend. The vast majority of violent crime and shootings I've covered is in communities where rap is probably the dominant genre of music. It's a sad part of a subculture that needs serious addressing. I would never have thought music or media has an overwhelming influence on violent crime the way people tried to put on Marilyn Manson in the 90s... but with some of the real life topics that turn into real life beef and at times real life shootings that we see from this crowd, it's clear some rap music is having a heavily negative impact on society. It's much more common than some lunatic listening to Cannibal Corpse and murdering his family. And I'm definitely not saying music is a single factor in these cases because there's clearly a lot more at play. But it is definitely a problem within a subculture.

@@m3talh3adr3born8 I'm not saying any type of music *causes* violence and video games don't cause violence. But they both can certainly be influencing factors. Gangster rap has a much more influencing tone about it than.
@hadara692 жыл бұрын
@@DaveKillebrew I appreciate your perspective, especially giving “Cannibal Corpse” a pass (I’m a fan!), HOWEVER I think this is a bit of a “Causation/Correlation” fallacy. Just like urban minorities are demonized by the (racist) RW in America, rap fans can be as well. The majority are poor, black kids where as the majority of rock fans are middle-class white kids. Of course there’s going to be more violence/crime among the former group. This is the specious reasoning racist RWers always make about black folks (and Hispanics like me); Claiming their propensity for a violent lifestyle and shitty coping skills is down to their race/culture ("Where are the fathers?!") rather than their environment and/or unimaginably fucked up life circumstances. I can tell you that everyone is susceptible to those pitfalls where extreme poverty and desperation are concerned. Rap has always been a reflection of that world, where as Metal/HR (of which I’m a lifelong fan) have been a reflection of a fantasy world full of “witches, warlocks, and demons”, etc. BIG difference. I have no doubt that you think you’ve seen a legit “causation” there but I think the stats would disagree with you.

I love Slipknot, but Corey Taylor is such a boomer dude, it makes it harder to respect someone who's just made of piss and vinegar and constantly shits on anything that's new.

I feel like its slipknots status as being legends, being cool dudes who went through some really deep shit and came out on the other side as better ppl. About the ride, the way and the years behind them that made them great, lovable, respactable human beings and for the fans absolutely amazing artists plus they were bigger 10 years ago than MGK ever was and prolly ever will be due to the message they were sending. For example I member the song "Disasterpiece" and it starts with theres 2 lines: "I want to slit your throat and fuck the wound". Some ppl may be grossed out by this, even traumatized, but the song is about bullying and hes sain it in the context "I am screamin in my bullies face and this is what I have to say". Plus if you ever been bullied and know how it feels, ya? Those two lines about describe it, almost perfectly in its pure, raw form. The way you would experience that hate, those feelings, those urges, he aint givin no fuck, no censorhip no nothing, he straight up fuckin tells you at the beggining all you need to know abou him, how he feels, and how that song is gonna go. MGK? He always has some alterior motive, you never know what hes up to, most rock and metal ppl are clean, they just wanna live their live, do music, get better at it, deliver better and keep on doin what they love. I feel like this aint the strongest drive for MGK, that he has other more materialistic drives and that is the main difference for me between them... MGK has many amazing songs, but I dont care for them becouse I dont care for the pedigree used to create them.

ok finn, i got a question for your next Q&A video related to this one that i think could be an interesting talking point. you mention the culture, values and norms of rock music in this video in regards to MGK and i was curious. what do you think the difference between MGK talking shit on corey taylor vs. what a lot of the grunge bands used to say about the hair metal bands in the early 90's? is it because the grunge bands were seen as a welcome change from what came before? is it because the grunge bands kinda had more of an underdog status? is it because grunge still had respect for 70's rock and punk? at this point, the trlcore flavor of pop-punk is as old now as the 70's rock and punk that the grunge bands took influence from. i'm just curious what you think about this.

Nah, As an MGK fan since 2011 myself I can say that Eminem won and was not even close. Everything else you state is completely true. If you go back as early as 2013, all his live concerts were filled with rock renditions of his original songs. Electric guitars, drums, a whole live band, he made awesome cover of Limp Bizkit at one point. Back in 2017 he was opening up for Linkin Park, made an awesome duet with Chester on stage and later took part in his memorial. If I can say so myself MGK was always more rock than hip hop. All the pop shit he did were mostly cash grabs, his essence was alwaays more like the early 2000s rock scene. He is kind of a child brain when it comes to speaking publicly aka defending himself, but I think he just needs a better PR agent.
@ShellyMS19xx2 жыл бұрын
The problem is he won't listen to a PR agent - he speaks for himself. That's good and bad. I just hope that he continues to mature and come to recognize that you don't have to say everything that crosses your mind.
