I think he's off here - it's not 'fun', it's exciting, it's depth. The Beatles were fun, then they got dark when they were most vital. The Rolling Stones were dark. There was nothing really 'fun' about The Doors, Pink Floyd, Zep, Hendrix, or really most any band from the 60s that was relevant. GnR became huge because they were a scary counterpoint to all the 'fun' throwaway strip bands. There was nothing fun about the Seattle bands. Even Sublime, being such a party band, had a really dark undercurrent to them. The Strokes were the last true rock band, tapping us back into something great when everything had gone nu-metal... they were certainly exciting and not fun, but they fizzled out. The only 'fun' rock band that had any real cultural impact is Van Halen because they were so freakin' amazing. MGK seems like a cool dude, but his attempt at rock is lame and boring... it's like even more watered down Blink, which is quite the accomplishment.

Rock is still fun - what has happened is that the industry has changed how music is delivered. With music now being streamed, listeners can choose to listen to specific songs instead of whole albums. Artists are more likely to release singles on a steady flow so they can remain relevant in the social media space. Rock doesn’t focus on Instagram posts. Also - a key element of rock is the underground roots with the bars and pubs that harvest new bands coming through, a lot of these have closed down and also the record company’s that sign them. It is easier now to stay at homemix a track on my laptop and release online, than finding a group of dedicated likeminded musicians in my local area to practice together and developing original content overtime. Most of the successful bands in the 90s were playing for 5+ years before they had success. It’s all about the now and relevant for the follows and the ‘likes’. The generation of instant success.

Was at a get together with some friends awhile back, I hadn’t been out for awhile and it was loud at first, but then someone came in and we got chatting about Deftones and he put some of it on and the room got more chill. I like the fun, but in moderation. I can appreciate music that sets a mood just as well as I can appreciate something a little more uplifting and exciting and playful. I’ve been pretty deaf to this passed decade though, sadly. I’ve been too busy discovering older songs I hadn’t heard before and just being a shut in for most of my 20s. All of the “rock and roll needs to be fun again” can be traced back to the explosion of Beatlemania. I would say it is more an addiction than wanting to be different. A great, tasty riff and a well crafted solo is not being outshined by thoughts of "ooh, this is different, and I am so cool". Most people who appreciate that, are being completely consumed by the music and really in a different place, just like a good high. Keeping rock out of mainstream is keeping it fresh and not part of a machine. Most non rock listeners can actually find the music too dark, and poo poo at the sound of cymbals and electric guitars. The non listeners are the prudes, trying to play a psychological trick by basically saying it's not what they want, it's not like welcome to the jungle and sweet child o mine (great songs), well some rock and metal will become very popular, but people can't handle loud music these days unless all the dBs are in the bass and sub bass region, which makes their butts jiggle. A lot of people don't even wanna listen to old rock and metal, so that argument fails that it's the musician's fault or the fans' fault entirely. Most people don't have the taste for it
@nubinshred3 жыл бұрын
@ayham kimo EDM is very very bass oriented, which aligns pretty well with what I wrote above. Also, I do like electronic music, so it was not a diss really. There are pretentious gatekeepers sure, but they are kind of a small % if you ask me, and everyone thinks they’re douchey and self absorbed. I honestly feel most casual listeners (people who are not obsessed with music and never were yet consume it frequently, to set a vibe) don’t have the taste for modern rock/metal. Imo music today shouldn’t try to copy the 80s music metaculture as that would be unoriginal and mostly a parody. I’m sorry if someone acted as a gatekeeper to you, screw that attitude. Keeping it fresh means, it is not beholden to follow a pattern, again the originality argument. Intra genre there are a lot of unintentional influencing of musical styles anyway, but I’m glad whatever musicians are putting out, it’s more of an expression of what they want rather than a record label telling them to make things more upbeat, when it’s not the band’s vibe
@nubinshred3 жыл бұрын
Let’s agree to disagree. I see your point, my main intent is to establish a more realistic estimate of the gatekeeper population. As I said, there’s not a lot of gatekeepers, I’ve only run into some and most of them actually gate themselves in too, and don’t explore much of music outside of their comfort zones
@sushibu3 жыл бұрын
I think the massive gatekeeping really didn't help either. I enjoy so much of the music you spoke about (and did growing up) but I don't obsess over names, artists, what guitar they used on that one set they had in Denver, CO in 2009 and so people get on me sometimes about not "really liking the music". That stuff has never made sense to me. I don't even know the name of the last movie I saw or enjoyed and I can still tell you I enjoyed it! If someone is wearing a band shirt, they don't have to list off their top 20 fav songs and name the full legal names of all the band members to wear it. FFS

For crying out loud, I had to look some of this stuff up for my music class. Don't confuse talent and gatekeeping. When he mentioned guitar nerding, he meant nerds like me are what's left of the scene because rock isn't mainstream anymore. So no, people like me didn't kill it. People stopped going after fun in rock and just started gatekeeping genres and artists to seem edgy. Nerds like me only go after the musical aspect

Coming from the UK where grime and pop music is usually what comes on the radio, i've found interestingly one band that is played at every party I've been to: The Arctic Monkeys. The culture shift they caused over here was immense and can still be felt years later as most people aged 16 to 30 will tell you. Not only did they make super catchy tunes that you can dance to but their lyrical content is incredibly relatable for teens coming of age. Whether you like rap or pop or edm most younger people in the UK will get down to 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'. Unfortunately AM spawned thousands of copycat indie/rock bands that have saturated the genre so it's hard to find good new rock for a lot of people.

MGK was always a fun rapper too, so him entering the rock scene was a natural transition for him. But yeah, music in general has been pretty moody for a while; it seems like the turning point was Lorde's "Royals" in 2013; all of the grandiose poppy songs that song was calling out started to fade away, and everyone started chasing that sound, including rock. And it did noooooot benefit that scene at all. So just like how we had to import BTS to get pop to cheer itself up, personally I've been heading overseas to J-Rock to find bands that are ready to throw down.

That doesn't change that the content of the video is flawed because it's all based off of a shitty leading question, AKA the title of the video. Finn always gives me Paul Ryan-stupidly-saying-"my favorite band is Rage Against the Machine" vibes due to his insistence that the only way music can be "good" is if it is profitable to media companies. That's the only consistent metric he seems to keep across his entire video catalog, from what I can tell. I could be wrong, but he always seems to pick a position and then try to cherry pick data to support the original statement as opposed to asking a question and then stating what he learned.
@vampirewilde3 жыл бұрын
@@david-lych-bell Cherry picking is exactly right. He argues the 90s were darker than the 80s and uses the example of Pulp Fiction (which I wouldn't exactly describe as dark). Well that same year Forrest Gump was also released. It was massive at the box office, won Best Picture and is about as light as movies come. It's worth noting the cultural phenomenon that is Friends debuted on TV in '94 (remember the Rachel haircut?) and dominated for the rest of the decade (alongside Seinfeld for a few years) and the early noughties, a show that's as cheesy as anything the 80s produced. He uses Back to the Future to illustrate how light the 80s are compared to the 90s, but if you were put Pulp Fiction next to Platoon which came out the year after BTTF his argument continues to fall apart. Platoon was undoubtedly a dark film, a smash hit with audiences and unlike BTTF won Best Picture. By cherry picking you could just as easily make the argument the 80s were darker than the 90s.

There are lots of interesting new bands coming, but I think that the Rock community is so deep conservative about the old hits and old bands, that they don't even give them a chance. Also, every time someone says they like a rock song, there is always that guy who needs to prove he loves it more, he knows it more, and that he's a bigger fan than you are. The community is over protective about their taste! I remember when Avenged Sevenfold started becoming a big deal, and the majority was like "this is kids music". But now they miss that days HAAHA
@T0xXx1k3 жыл бұрын
Avenged sevenfold is my favourite band and I'm here to tell you that waking the fallen was a GD MASTERPIECE. Also to very much prove your point. That was so reflexive I almost couldn't not say anything and mid thought I was like yup this is what he taking about and he right. 🧡 🦇
@ktownshutdown213 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the rock scene has a bad habit of not being too kind to outsiders. Like it took them *forever* to get off of Babymetal's ass when they were on the come up, despite folks like Rob Zombie and Judas Priest trying to vouch for them like "hey, they're cool, relax guys!" Even MGK right now is still seeing resistance that never want to move past Metallica. It's their strict taste or nothing. Little wonder then why the younger generation would be hesitant to join the community and carry the torch.
@calebjaques14163 жыл бұрын
I would argue that the main reason rock songs became boring is because the only bands creating rock songs in 2013 were guys who hadn't been teenagers since 1998 and the only things they had going on in their lives to sing about were divorce and raising kids alone. No new, young bands picked up the torch for Blink 182, Sum 41, Green Day, All Time Low, and Paramore because those new singers chose to become rappers or DJs instead. Consequently, there was no one to sing about teen angst and love anymore.

11:23 that's literally the direction New Order took. They were originally an indie post-punk band called Joy Division but the frontman Ian Curtis died from suicide due to personal problems and fame. New Order fused other styles of music like indie, pop, dance and electronic and basically invented their own genre called "Alternative Dance" they were a major success and popular among clubs and djs during the 80s. They might have also influenced some modern indie bands. Edit: i might want to add the smiths and the cure who also influenced most present day indie and jangle rock music
@nicholashouse42613 жыл бұрын
I think one part of the issue is that rockers have adopted the elitist punk attitude, but without adopting the beliefs and values of hardcore and punk that made the attitude make sense back in the 80s. Instead of the social and political philosophy of bands like the Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat/Fugazi, and Youth of Today, we have a bunch of grumpy hairy bearded dudes who whine about not having an audience while doing everything they can to alienate any potential listeners. I feel like rock, especially underground rock, has become a set of rules--don't do collabs, don't do radio friendly stuff, don't self-promote, don't have a cool lightshow, don't be a rockstar--don't do anything that shows that might be fun or enjoyable. It's becoming like the 90s Norwegian metal scene--"I'm miserable, so everyone else has to be miserable too! And if you're not miserable, you're a poser."

@@TheNewChevyRoll48 You'd think so, but there's a lot of it out there, kinda always has been. Back in the early 2000s, I was pretty big into the punk scene, and was in a band and stuff, but there were a handful of people grouching about how people were too "pop" and not hardcore enough. I thought it was idiotic, personally - let people have fun with music and fashion and all that, and as long as it's coming from a genuine place (not trying to jump on a trend) then it's all good. But yeah, even back then not everyone agreed. I wouldn't be surprised if older punks saw at least a little of that attitude back then, too. These days you see people saying you can't be conservative and punk, which makes me laugh because if you wanna be technical, liberalism *is* the mainstream these days & they just haven't realized it yet.... though personally I don't think they should gatekeep to begin with.
@ryanfraley7113 Жыл бұрын
@@aerialpunk Maybe this is because at the core conservatives were the original innovators of cancel culture? People win historical understandings realize that punk would get attacked by conservative politicians the second it became cool again.
@aerialpunk Жыл бұрын
@@ryanfraley7113 One of the Ramones was conservative (can't remember which off the top of my head; maybe it was Johnny?). And politics can change (and boy, has it ever in my lifetime). Plus, there are different facets of any political belief, it's just not that simplistic. Now, being conservative is counter-culture, that's just what it is, and it doesn't matter if maybe hypothetically conservatives in general wouldn't like it if it became cool again. Heck, I'd wager a lot of them right now don't like it. It doesn't really matter, because punk music isn't tied to a specific set of political beliefs. If say the only thing that is a must for a punk attitude is that most punks, and punk philosophy, don't overly care what others think of them, they tend to care about the little guy and the working class. The idea that conservatives *can't ever* encompass these things, or that the left wing always does, is just bald-faced stereotyping with little ground in reality. Back in the day, punks struggled with social issues from different sides, were often anti-authority... Now they struggle with these issues, and are anti-authority, but the issues have all changed and the power balances have changed. It'd be really silly to say this or that person can't be punk, just because they hold some different views, or maybe have changed in accordance with the rest of the world.

Damn, I've never made fun music, guess that explains a lot about why my songs never go as far as I'd like them to? Then again, I've never really turned to music for fun - I turned to it as a medium to alleviate my pain and depression. I guess it goes back to, you know how to write what you experience. That being said, this video has been very informative for me, thanks! I'm gonna keep doing what speaks to me though, even if it never goes anywhere!
