In this video, we explore the fascinating history of French automakers in the United States, the challenges they faced, and why they ultimately pulled out of the market. Fun fact, the Porsche 911, would actually have been named 901, but Peugeot owns the right to a 3 digit model name, with a 0 in the middle, therefore porsche had to name it 911.

to clarify, Peugeot announced returning to the US in 2026 back in 2019 when it was still PSA Peugeot, this is before they merged with Fiat Chrysler to become Stellantis, to my knowledge those plan may have been scraped as the merger automatically gave them brands in the US

I didn’t even know French cars weren’t popular in the US, they are all over the place in the uk. I mean, we have one, the people down the road have one, my neighbour had one (a Renault 5 Turbo, to be exact), a friend of mine has one. Honestly, French cars over here are like big SUVs to the US - everyone ether has one, or you know someone who has one

Growing up in Kenya in the early 60's exposed me to French cars, especially Peugorts and Renaults. They are great vehicles, even if the US market does not think so!

The French, along with the Germans, were the first to produce cars, at the end of the 19th century. And before the Second World War, French cars were the most luxurious in the world, with brands like Delage, Delahaye, Voisin, Talbot, Hispano-Suiza, Bugatti, etc. All over the world, true collectors know this. kzbin.info/www/bejne/apfYpZ2YYrSaa5Y If since 1945, French manufacturers have mainly targeted the family car segment, it is mainly for tax reasons, which have not prevented them from producing some of the most beautiful machines of recent decades, such as the Facel Vega, in the 50s/60s, or more recently the Venturi, in the 80s/90s. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXarlZinq5iFn8k kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqeTfWCrd9-Xpbs In 2025, French manufacturers are still ranked among the the world top 10. They sell on all continents, except North America. Otherwise, one of the reasons why French cars have never really worked in the US is that, in my opinion, the general mood in this country is quite anti-French.

Just to be clear most large SUV's aren't even safer than a fiat 500 to drive because of thier stif frames, tendency to roll over and thier lack of safety precautions which is because they count as 'light trucks' which have different safety guidelines than cars. Sorry for my excessive japping😅

We should probably note that Bugatti is not actually a French car company. It is a division of VW which makes BS car's as part of the marketing

It was actually only the car side of SAAB that was bought by GM and driven to bankrupt. Also partially coz of SAAB being SAAB and not wanting to comform to GM path. Good ol classic Swedish stubborness

The pronunciation 😂. You got Citroen correct. Peugeot is pronounced per Joe or pew Joe by some. Renault you pronounce ok but you don’t annunciate it Like ren NO …. just renno some people do pronounce it ren ult All 3 of these manufacturers do make big executive salon cars as well as medium sized salons.

0:40 I don't feel like this is true at all, while cars like a c3 c4 xsara or a 206 are known for being cheap and fairly reliable, french cars are definitely known for being comfortable. also, sidewalks in the US?
