Not that anyone asked for it but I never understood singlespeeds (and later fixed) until I had to borrow one for mountain biking. I came out of serious depression with heavy medications and doctors that refused to recommend me to a therapist and it left a lot of problems no one professional would help me tackle. I was being constantly reminded I was broken and needed meds to make me human, and I had to report to others to prove I wasn't a danger to myself. On top of that I had to pay for it all, basically seeing myself as sub-human paying for the right to be with normal people. It was total bullshit, and I know that now... Fast forward to that singlespeed rigid mtb I spun my lungs out until I came to an infamous uphill switchback that I decided to say fuck it and hit as hard as I could. It was a revelation to say the least, no waiting on someone else just mash and make it happen, and when I got to the top I knew it was all me, nothing helped me up that hill but my own determination. Now I ride fixed brakeless on centuries and shoot for pr's the faster riders couldn't dream of on their carbon Di2 rigs. Way healthier now too life's been great and I owe a lot of it to dropping the extras and seeing how far I can go with simplicity.

Completely get that! Bought an old beat up pos State fixie about a year and a half ago. Tuned up the drive train and have been on it ever since. There’s just something about cracking up to speed and feeling the bike contribute to maintaining it, cruising down hill a little slower & safer 8:07 and torquing up hill and knowing it all me. Nice to have had only one flat in that time when I used to have them all the time, sometimes two in one ride. 😤 Just treated myself to the new State 4130 with the fat 38 tires. So smooth, so solid and surprisingly fast. On smooth tarmac it feels like flying. 👍👍👍😎

I ride single speed freewheel, riding fixed just makes me miss coasting too much. I also feel way more confident on sharp turns & uneven ground because I can avoid pedal strike much easier. That said I do miss being able to brake/slow down with my legs & staying upright while stopped is way easier on fixed.

I have a Giant Contend 2017 I put 5000 miles on it then turned it into a single speed, it was great. Then I put some bmx bars on it, so much fun so light so large! Now I have a pair of flat bars a pair of drops and bmx bars all set up with the right brake cable length. One bike single speed and it can be 3 completely different bikes in two minutes!!!!! Please if you haven’t yet, put some bmx bars on that fixie just to see how it feels you will love it 😻

I was 15 living in Upstate NY. Rode country roads, up and down mountain ish style grades, all on a single speed. And thank god, one time I lost a chain link, about 10 miles from home. Took the bread time from my sandwich baggie (ziplock was too expensive 😉) and used that to get myself home. It worked so well that i added two more when I got home and rode it that way for about a week before it finally broke. Point is, I doubt that would’ve worked with a multi speed bicycle.

I converted my 1967 Claud Butler to single speed by dismantling the 5-speed block and putting the cog i wanted in the middle CHEAP 😃. Love riding it you can feel the extra efficiency of the drive train

I have that same Schwinn Stites bike but when I purchased it, it didn't come with reversible back sprocket. Did yours come with two back sprockets or did you have to turn the sprocket around to make it a fixie?

I've always loved single speed, something about being able to just get on and go without shifting i've always loved. While I have a hybrid bike that I love to bits, I still have my complaints about having to gear down or up to make any change in speed, where as with a single speed if I want more speed I pedal faster lol. Just got myself my first fixed gear after not owning a bike in 17 years today (BMX in my younger days). Definitely a learning curve. Not use to thin tires and saw a patch of sand on this little twisted turn, freaked out because my legs keep moving, forgot about the brake and road into some grass on a bank thinking these rims are about to snap in half on my first ride. All good though, really love it.

I just love my single and fixed. I use my single so I can go crazy top end. (personal best 44.3mph) On my fixed I have no breaks so I'm more cautious, it's so much fun skidding etc on it. To be honest I bought A-Works road bike and rarely use it.

The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

My reasons (42 yo, female): simplicity. No-fuss. Don't ride long distances, don't ride too fast. Just everyday commuting. So what would I need all those gears for? Or the next thing to break? Or the extra weight. One "summer" bike - light, build on an old road bike frame. And one heavy-duty winter with wider tires, mudguards and so on.

If you live in the country, low gears are necessary to clean very steep hills, one gear, especially if your gear ratio is on the high side will prevent finishing steep hills; for a medium hill one gear is fine if your legs are strong and your climbing technique is good. I learned my single speed skills on a mountain bike which had riser bars. I have drop bars on my fixed gear You learn a technique where you stand on the pedals& pull back on one side of the bar while pushing down with the opposite pedal. If you have good foot retention to the pedals. You can also pull up with other pedal for more power. That is a disputed proposition , but the steeper the hill the better it works IME. Everyone must learn for themselves but I’m a strong proponent of clipless pedals and an “upstroke” while climbing for the average rider. riders who grew up on BMX with flat pedals have skills that pretty much must be learned when you are young. Don’t try to imitate them if you are mature.

You can also leave them locked outside of bars overnight, and not worry about something "expensive" getting stolen. They are beater bikes, and you can treat them as such (build dependent).

Question: Has anyone else noticed that their SS feels more efficient or just somehow better to ride than their geared bike for the same gear ratio? I have a cheap road bike I converted to SS, and a nicer geared road bike, and for some reason on the SS the ride just feels really really good. I've checked to make sure brakes aren't dragging, I've checked the drivetrain on the geared bike, I've lubed the chain, I've swapped the wheels/tires between the two bikes. The only thing I can think of is either the BB is somehow dragging, or there's just something mental about the SS and not having easier gear options. Thoughts?

Most definitely feel the momentum continue after punching up to a good speed and getting back down on the saddle. I ride with no straps and flip flops and work the pedals back with my toes and forward with my quads. It’s such a complete workout for the legs, and the hard climbs just engage your whole body. I think if I were to torque my carbon road bike that hard I’d break it. Bought a used State fixed gear for $100 and have not ridden anything else since and it’s been 6 months. Absolutely LOVE IT!!!

Fixies are usually 700c wheels, he mentioned 28mm wide tires during that one cyclocross race. If you want a softer ride, you can try and see if 650b wheels and tires fit in your frame. Those wheels are usually paired with bigger tires and it’ll help with absorbing bumps better

police auction 18yrs old, picked up a ROSS 10 speed for $20. Road it for at least a 1000 miles while in college. Used bikes are inexpensive if know where to look. Easy one is go to local Church, tell them your situation and dollars to donuts someone in congregation will donate their old bike. Hey just did a 10 sec search and came up with "Ross "Eurotour", 27", 10-speed, $65".

You can coast on FG bike as well. Just let your feet move on with pedals but don't apply pressure, so effectively you are resting at that time. Well, it's very close to coasting without really coasting.

I bike to work (weather and personal fortitude permitting) whenever possible and love the idea of a single speed, I may pull the trigger next year if I get the opportunity. Hi Jokim nice story I ride fixed only ride style is ride barefoot and ride the wave ...the best feature is I don't get lactose problem in my legs due to constant leg movements in constant motion but not constant load which means you legs can be under light tourk which refreshes leg pain quickly whilst in motion that s why I think fixie is the king of bikes the original bike of your d France thanks for video 🐝👍👣

I believe, cyclists divide into ones who can ride without backpedaling and ones who just can't. In this sense, FG and CB are similar....to an extent, as on FG one can backpedal at times.

I didn't mean backpedaling in a sense of freewheel bc there's no real backpedaling on FG while in motion, but there's similar leg reflex - to brake with rear, stop pedaling and push against the pedals. Of course, FG isn't as cooperative as CB is to legs.

I did it for a customer once at the shop, but it was a single speed cog specific hub, so it didn’t look weird nor were the spoke tensions off by too much. I’d be hesitant to bolt a cog to a 10 speed disk hub haha

Ha, yeah I remember taking my BMX off homemade jumps, single speed of course, Wal-Mart special, it was still in good shape until we gave it away to a kid a couple years ago. It was about 15 years old. Just about done revamping my hardtail now, swapped it to a 1x8, hollowtech, about to change the fork and basically the whole cockpit. Keeping my cane creek headset though. It's still going strong, almost nine years old on the same grease. Probably will update the grease finally though.

I think that large retailers like Walmart should sell more single speed/fixed gear bikes. 150$ single speeds can be reliable transportation for someone who needs it, and “mountain” bikes in that price point try to do too much and end up being unsafe.

When I was younger on my 12 ton mongoose I was king. Mid-late 00s on a golden bike(eventually got a 3 spoke black wheel in front) WITH working breaks? Pfft king of the block. B)

Damn damn, I'm permanently returning to idea of ss/fg only bc I rode ss bike in my early youth. But now when I could have fancy geared bike I like idea of minimalism and lightness. Autumn is a good time to shop for or build a bike.

@@Spindatt I almost decided on this but found complete bike - Maze Tracker. Cromo frame, not sure if I like hi profile wheels , but luckily not colored and I like riser bars (risers or bulls would be my choice, anyway). Price is about right - building such from scratch would cost me more, unless I start with old frame. I realize build is a pleasure on its own, though. I'd maybe go for lighter wheels and different tires.
