That’s a great video. I run a Yaesu FTM-400 in my truck and one of coolest contacts I’ve made on simplex 146.520 was with a Lear Jet pilot at 37,000 feet. I was near Muenster, Texas and he was flying southbound over Lawton, Oklahoma heading to Cleburne, Texas. He made a lot of contacts at that altitude while I rarely catch anything up here in north Texas on simplex. Thanks for sharing your video! K5DEH

Thanks for the comment. Aeronautical contacts are really fun. The 400 is a great radio! I have family up in Denton and are up there often. I haven’t heard much activity on simplex either, but I’m there mainly on weekends & holidays. Maybe we should try & schedule a QSO. We might need some tropospheric ducting to help us. Gainesville is 30 mins from Denton right?
@doughutchison6382Ай бұрын
@@wa5azqhamradio That is correct. Gainesville is approximately 30 miles north of Denton on I-35. Have a great day.

It great you were able to get contacts on 2 meters and 70 cm simplex.... In our area you can call Simplex for hours... No one wants to play Radio.. Lots of FT8 etc but very little simplex phone. Thanks

Luckily I live near a big metro area with a major interstate running through it. The ham community is very active here as well. Lots of hills helps with elevation to get our signals out further too. Thanks for watching! 73!

There's a lot of activity on 146.52 around Portland, Oregon. We've had QSOs with a couple F-18 pilots out of the Naval Air Station in Washington. This should put a smile on your face when it comes to 146.52 activity. I didn't get the recording started as soon as I wanted as I wasn't prepared for this to happen. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKTIg4OamdmSaqM

I’m lucky enough to live near a large metro area with lots of tech companies, etc. and so ham radio is pretty popular here with lots of participants.

@@wa5azqhamradio I have two 500’s and I wish I would’ve never let me 400 go.. I’ve since switched to a lot of anytones like the 578

My Elmer got me hooked on Yaesu’s from the time I got my Tech ticket and once I made General I bought a 991a. I’ve never owned an Anytone and have wondered how good they are.

That is a Yaesu FTM-400. That’s just the control head. The main body of the radio is in the bottom lefthand corner of the video. It’s a dual band FM radio (VHF & UHF) with 2 meters & 70cm. It has been discontinued but you can buy them second hand. The brand new, updated model for that rig currently is the FTM-500. And there are “cousin” models that don’t have as many bells & whistles for cheaper price points-the FTM-200, 300 & 6000 are models that are all still being made at this time. Congrats on getting into the hobby and good luck! 👍🏼 Thanks for watching! 73! Michael-WA5AZQ

@kandr4439 I’ve got a 991a as well…I love it so far! I also have a 500 that I run mobile and the 400 is now in the shack. I will have some VHF contesting videos coming out soon where I used the FTM-500 so stay tuned!

@@wa5azqhamradio Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye out and check them out when you post them. I've only had my license for a month and I'm already studying to get my "general". I find myself really leaning to the HT realm but, as a technician, only having the small window on 10m is so limiting. I listen in on conversations from all over the place on 20m and can't wait to be able to jump in.
