Radiosport...or contesting with amateur radio is fun!
You don't even need to be entered into the contest to make contacts. It would certainly help the contesting station if you did enter a log no matter how many contacts you make. It's usually simple to send in a log.
With Solar Cycle 25 at its peak (at the time this video was produced) even Technician licensees can get into contesting on HF on 10 meters in the single side band mode (SSB).
There are also lots of contests that use the VHF/UHF (and up) bands and some include 6 meters which Techs have the full privileges on that entire band.
Don't be afraid of contesting. It doesn't take a huge "super station" to get involved!
For HF contests, a 10 or 6 meter SSB capable radio and a home built wire dipole antenna will work. Dipoles for those bands are not all the long.

Digital Noise Reduction is on and can sound this way. On my FT-991A I do not use it very much only on it's minimum setting. It only seems to work well when you have a signal in there. With just unsquelched radio it sounds very watery is a term I have heard used for the sound. 15 meters is way under used in my opinion. Keep learning that is part of the fun of Ham Radio.

Thanks for the comment! Thats kind of my thinking for starting my channel. I’m trying to start adding the callsigns of the contacts in the chapters of each video so if people want you to search their call, they can see how they sounded to me. Hopefully I’ll work up the courage to being in front of the camera soon. 😆

Wow, what mode are you operating? It certainly is not SSB. It sounds very digitized and narrowband. Virtually impossible to understand the audio. If it *is* SSB, it sounds like your digital processing is really messing up the audio quality. :(

Yes. Thats analog SSB. Not digital. 15 meters was just about the only usable band towards the end of this international contest. So, as the title states, the band was VERY crowded. I haven’t completely figured out how to use all the filters yet, but I’m trying. Thanks for the comment! 👍🏼

Yep. Good old 5/9! Yet, you have to send back a bunch of times! What a joke! He's to lazy and/or stupid to send a good report to you. How unfortunate! Sounds more like a glorified good buddy than a ham radio op.! Kd7cjo 73

I’ll just go with: you don’t do much, if any, contesting or you think contesting “clogs up the bands”. So without giving a TED Talk on contesting…Getting the exact exchange needed for a particular contest is more important than a true signal report…everyone that does contesting uses “59” for expediency. Contesting is a challenge to see how many contacts a station can make in a certain amount of time. It’s not a ragchew. Thanks for watching! 😃 I hope the rest of your day goes better!
