"Sometimes I feel the goal keepers don't be trying" I hear and read the same thing about defenders against Messi. An instructional example are the goal keepers trying to stop Messi penalties. All these people seem to be lazy, or just not competent. Yet many of them are rated the best at their profession. The answer are Messi's fakes. You sometimes see defenders going to ground before Messi scores. You don't notice Messi's fake shots which make the defenders over extend themselves to protect the goal...from a shot that never comes. You don't see the fake hip snap that sends a goalie going the wrong way. Goalies are also expected to cover the near post as that's an easier shot, but to Messi all the shots are easy. Goalies are taught to go forward on a break-away attack when there are no defenders left, in order to reduce or close the angles...only to have Messi produce a perfect lob over their heads. Give credit where credit is due. Messi is so good that he makes opponents look like incompetents or idiots.

Thanks for the reaction this has to be one of my fav season of Messi he won ballon d’or in 2019🐐. I've watched Messi for years stats and words don't do him justice they don't show the things he does every game. Like; first touches, superhuman vision, the dribbling away from 4 players at once, creating passing lanes that don't exist, putting the perfect weight on the pass for his teammates. Although Messi is untouchable on stats ground too.

Not that the goalkeepers are not trying, he shoots at their blindspot or at a time they least expect it, by the time the keeper realise he hit the ball it's already too late to react. I've played both Attacking middler and Goalkeep, you can paralyze a keeper. Sometimes keepers Don't even know the ball went it, they be waiting for the ball then boom everyone is celebrating

Trust me it’s not that the keeper isn’t trying 😂, the camera angle makes it look like the keeper should have attempted, but in reality, if you look at how big the goals are, the keeper stands no chance, especially with the speed Messi shoots at.
