00:00 Hello Everyone!
The Julius Baer Generation Cup, the 5th event on the $2 million 2023 Champions Chess Tour, features three Divisions of 8, 16 and 32 players. Each division is a double-elimination knockout where if you lose one match you drop down to a Losers bracket and can still win the tournament. In the Grand Final if the player from the Winners bracket loses, there's a rematch. The total prize fund is $235,000, with a top prize of $30,000 (150 Tour points) in Division I, $10,000 in Division II (50 points) and $5,000 (20 points) in Division III. The top 3 in Division I and the winner of Division II qualify straight to Division I of the next event on the Tour.
The time control for normal games is 15 minutes per player for all moves, with a 3-second increment each move. In Division I and II the Winners bracket matches are played over four games, while in the Losers bracket there are two games. In Division III all matches are over two games except the 4-game Grand Final. A tie in a match is decided by an Armageddon game with no increment, where the players bid for time they are willing to play with. The lowest bidder gets that time and can pick colour, while the opponent gets 15 minutes. Black only needs a draw to win the match. Official website: championschesstour.com

Watching this live was so crazy, all hope for Magnus was lost when the bar evaluation show almost full white, but just one inaccuracies, not even a blunder, could made the game turn around and bit by bit Magnus bar was raising and finally won the game. Just another crazy stuff by Magnus. It must be really scary to play against him, just one slight inaccuracy after 99 percent perfect moves could rob you from the victory you deserved. And it’s not even a draw but a loss. So devastating.

You guys are being pedantic. The eval bar gives which position is winning (if there is a winning position). To expect that top players with 85%+ accuracy will convert a winning position to an actual win, is a very reasonable expectation. Therefor, to say that a top player with a winning position is currently winning, is am accurate statement.

Double elimination is a two bracket system. I think the more accurate names of both brackets are upper bracket and lower bracket, but it is commonly referred to as winner's and loser's. Everyone has to lose twice to be eliminated but the finals is always determined by having someone who never lost vs someone who has lost once. It's a nice change of pace, even if it feels weird to give the grand final an obvious advantage to one player (who earned it by winning all their games prior), but the cool part is sometimes a player who lost in the first round wins it all by beating the player who never lost in two matches right at the end. It's an interesting system.

Okay, Alireza missed that Qb3 move which would have won the game. But given the complexity of the position and the time constraints for BOTH players, I would hardly call the move that Alireza's made, Rd4, a "blunder"...no more than I would call Magnus' h5 move in the late opening a "blunder". That's why today's top engines can easily defeat any one of the super grandmasters alive. Humans cannot...and do not...play "perfect" chess. Because if they did, then they'd be no need for engines, or even for the game of chess any longer!

It’s just winners finals and losers finals. Easy to understand if you just know there are 2 brackets. A winners side bracket and a loser side bracket You only get eliminated from the tournament if you get eliminated from both the winners side first, then the losers side, hence double elimination tournaments. Grand finals is between the winners bracket finalist and the losers bracket finalist. Coming from the winners side has the advantage of needing to be eliminated twice in grand finals because it is still double elimination. The losers finalist has already been eliminated once so they don’t have that luxury

Yeah he should really just show the bracket(s), it makes it super easy to understand. Double-elimination bracket is very well established in some disciplines and I personally really like it - it still has this a thrill of knockout tournament, but a player has always a second chance in losers ladder, which is more fair than pure cup system. So in that system, the player that loses in winners ladder goes to the losers ladder and face winners winner in a second match, which I guess is quite mouthful, but in the end very logical.

Not sure what counts as top-tier these days but 9...h5 has been played by at least 4 GMs and various other Masters. In addition, if white is genuinely caught by surprise, the logical continuation is 10. f4 Neg4; 11. Bg1, which transposes back to one of the main lines. 11. Ndb5 strongly suggests that Firouzja was fully prepared for this "never played" move. I think the continuation that maybe slightly threw him was 12. Nxe4, since the stem game for this variation (Tukaeva-Murzin 2015) continued 12...Rxa2 with a quick win for white.

Double-elimination is not confusing. It just means that: you are eliminated by losing twice. This was a match between unbeaten players. So neither could be eliminated. In this case, they were the only 2 unbeaten players remaining. So, the winner would qualify to the Grand Final undefeated, which is an advantage. The GF is played by a player with no defeat against a player with one loss. The one-loss player needs to win twice; the undefeated player, only once.

I was a little confused about how White is "much better" in the hypothetical line at 5:28. Black has a rook, 2 knights, and 2 pawns in place of White having a queen. Isn't this a huge material advantage? True Black's pieces are underdeveloped, but there aren't even any immediate threats from White on the board. It doesn't seem like it would be that hard for Black to at least hold this to a draw.

It's called "winner's final" because going into this match they are the last two players that never lost a set. Following this is "loser's final" where both players are the last remaining to only lose one set (you have to lose twice to be eliminated from the tournament). Then "grand final" is the match between the player who hasn't lost a set (winner coming from winner's bracket) and the last player left to only lose one set (winner coming from loser's bracket).

3:28 Why not Bishop to A7? Threaten to queen, force the trade on the rook. IF the continue to trade, and take the knight after the bishop rook exchange, you take theirs... right?

white is already down a piece. After all of those trades black would end up with 2 minor pieces for the rook, and also white's pressure would have vanished

I still imagine Magzy would be almost unbeatable in classical...but it clearly bores him. I must admit the decline in quality in rapid/blitz from how these guys play in classical time control is a bit annoying now and then.

Why not have a grand grand final?

It would happen in a way, cause Magnus would also get a second chance if he loses grand final. It's double elimination after all. But probably shorter time format.

It was always my opinion that the winner of the loser's bracket should have to beat the winner of the winner's bracket twice. Some organizations don't do this, like in the LLWS.

You are all wrong. The loser bracket winner always has to beat the winners bracket winner twice in grand finals. It is double elimination. There is no extra life. They all need to be eliminated twice. Winners bracket winner has never been eliminated so they need to lose twice in grand finals
