What is the usual penalty for "impeding" when both drivers are on a cool-down lap? nothing. Because it's not a penalty situation. The Stewards just made up a one-place grid penalty on the fly to placate Mercedes. When Checo got a one place grid penalty in 2020, it was for a collision in FP2. When Hulkenberg got a one place grid penalty in 2016, it was for using the wrong tyres. I can find NO examples of drivers getting penalized for "impeding" when both drivers were on a cool down lap. Russell was told of Max's position, and still cried about it.

Ok. Dare I bring some balance to the conversation. Firstly: we don't know what was said in the stewards meeting, only what Max interpretation of what was said. Secondly: George was hoping to get pole position from Max when Max got in his way. Not Max's fault. George waa probably pissed because, in his mind, Max fkd any chance that George could get the pole. Plus he was probably scared shitless by what happened. Not Max's fault! Thirdly, because George is a typical F1 driver he probably only saw the incident through the lens of Max intentionally getting in the way. He also sniffed an opportunity to gain an advantage. Fourthly: the stewards should have investigated it properly before issuing any penalty. Was Alonso interviewed? Did they look at all the onboards? I suspect they couldn't have. That said George catching Max so fast looked extremely dangerous. Not Max's fault. Fifthly: it was a totally stupid decision to penalise Max. If they'd done their job properly then there'd be no penalty. Sixthly: Just because one driver makes an opinion judgement on another driver, doesn't make that opinion a fact. The last one George was ahead at the apex and had every right to turn, Verstappen caused that incident and should have been penalised. He's right how many times has Verstappen gone on to fight dirty, when someone takes the fight to him, all of a sudden he throws his toys out fo the pram! What wasn’t mentioned publicly was that Alonso, the car ahead of Verstappen, slowed down, forcing Max to break the delta and almost causing a collision with George. Alonso, with his grudge against British drivers-especially George, ever since the break-testing incident in Australia-did this intentionally. Wow is this the real Radio Recording between Russel and his Engineer or is this made up to place Russel in a much worse place that he deliberately executed a dangerous driving move towards Max and then instant calling for Penaltys? If this are the true recordings and if we can hear it afterwards, Max also did and that in Quali before the race where Max got an one-place Grid Penalty just for Russel to go from P2 to Pole Position. I like that George is prepared to stand his ground and not be intimidated by Max, on or off the track! However, it was so wrong to go after Max with this unwarranted penalty - Is George giving Max a taste of his own medicine for playing the rule book in bad faith! I've liked how passionate George was about his team (Williams) and how he stood up for Albon as a worthy driver, that he ran over to help Zhou when he crashed, however, I can't stand what he did to Bottas - did he ever apologise?

If george said Max was at fault and said he deserves a penalty in the interviews, Max wouldn't have said what he said. I love George, he is one of the few who can draw out real vitriol from people which is a true skill and much needed in the F1 paddock. I’ve always found his prim school boy demeanor a caricature and I suspect he has a sense of irony behind. He is also handsome and a heartthrob for all kinds of fans. Truly a consummate gentleman, competitor and I hope future champion. Hats off to ya George!

I'm not a fan of either driver, but George is absolutely right in what he says about the collision at Baku. Max is a hypocrite. He's runs cars off the road far more than George ever has, but doesn't like getting a taste of his own medicine.
