I attribute my success this season to being mobile. I pack my stand in sticks in every time and never sit the same tree more than twice. This past season has been my best yet, 7 deer down.

I used to be like that when I was young...and you're right. I'm old now, so I can't do all that stand toting too much, I usually ground hunt when I want to be mobile. A big reason why we were able to harvest 3 mature healthy bucks selectively from our deer herd this season was from information I learned from watching this channel. I’ve been hunting the same property for 32 years. It has never flourished as much as it has in the past 3/4 years from the information I’ve picked up here and applying it to our family ranch. I've enjoyed discovering this channel and taking in the content. I did a quick map calculation and it looks like I've got about 70% of my 40 acre plot (purchased last year) as core. Just want to say Jeff’s book, All Weather Whitetails, helped me to better identify high value days to hunt where I would consistently see deer during those times. Only prob is, this last sit, 3 does were 100 yards away and alls I had was my crossbow. Anyways, this was my first season out deer hunting. I got one spike out of dumb luck on my first sit of the season, but after that, as it turned into the late season, spotting deer became much harder (that’s when I got Jeff’s book, which helped immensely). I notice that the deer don’t stay on the trail in the late season. They cut through the brush areas bc they can - the brush is either dead or much shorter and easier to traverse. So the stand locations that worked well during the fall, were not as useful in January. I think I need to setup a ground blind or two next season for the winter when it would be more advantageous to be in the middle of brush.

When I first started deer hunting about 10 years ago I literally thought the only thing there was to know is hunt just the first hours in the morning and just the last couple hours before dark because that's when deer move the most. I cant say my season was a failure. It was our 1st yr on the new property and i was able to harvest a doe and my son was able to harvest one of his target bucks. I saw my target buck at 15 yards just no good shot. We saw alot of great bucks and we have ideas for next yr and what not to do

I only have 15 acres to hunt, and I hunt moose mid Sept-early October, so I inevitably am disrupting the core area prior to deer rut. Do you have any tips for me not to spook the bucks prior to the rut? I live in central Alberta and my land is totally treed (no ag).

Hi Jeff is there a minimum distance you like your access from a bedding area? I have a bedding area that I am screened by brush and grass that they can't see through. I think I can be quiet walking past them to access without them hearing but how close do you think is too close? Thank you for the video addressing what I think is the most important factor of a hunting property.

My biggest problem is not being able to plant in the swamp. Only place I can plant is my access route in. Plus not having the money to put towards seed and fertilizer. Just have to hope my daytime browse will work out

Great video Jeff and crew. Is there a reason (or reasons) you chose southeast MN, specifically the exact area you did, to purchase your hunting land? It’s obviously a great area, with great hunting opportunity, but had you considered Wisconsin or Iowa?

Hi Alex! I like the western WI region and the lacrosse area. Not a big fan of moving to Iowa just for the hunting at this time. We actually wanted to be within a 1/2 hour of lacrosse, on either side of the river. There wasn't much available and we got lucky for sure, finding a home and acreage we could split away from the original listing that included roughly 150 more acres. We were looking within a couple of counties on either side of the river. Also, we are in a CWD area and that gave us multiple buck tags, or I would have only considered WI and maybe Iowa at that point. If they ever go back to 1 tag we may move...but we are establishing even greater business related roots so that may be tough. Either way, we get to hunt both WI and MN...which was critical 👍😊

Your northwoods buddy talks about 3 strips of food with 1/3 being summer food, seems like a good ratio to avoid a doe factory. Any thoughts?

It all depends on if you are in herd building or not. Most of the time Summer food should be much less than 1/3rd. For example we have clover hunting plots that total roughly 1.5 acres out of over 20 acres of food plots in 2 states. In some areas you want 100% summer food that you convert all or partial to Fall food later. The bottom line is that there is absolutely no set % or # of acres for any of this. To say there is a set #, is to not understand food plotting or the strategy of food plotting in any way. One of the many reasons we separated from Northwoods...Quality Control. Whether that is in blends or overall strategy.

​@@briandaniel9434 you definitely want 100% Summer food then. You then want to take that and convert to Fall food at least 50%. However, that % varies depending on the region you are in. For example clover can be a great Fall plot in KY...not so much in northern MI.
