I agree with the southeast tips. When should we plant the buckwheat? I want to adopt this system. Right now we just let the weeds take over and till because we thought that was our only real option without a drill. Soybeans can't keep up with the browse so I want to try buckwheat for summer cover crop. Do the deer ever eat the buckwheat?

@@brianboyett6250 I was surprised to see that they do in my area, but there isn't much native browse either. They do prefer other things like cow peas, radish, and cereal grains more...oh yeah, sunflowers are their favorite.

I spent 2 years part- time while in college testing and developing test methods for many herbicides. I love Jeff's videos and he has taught me much. When it comes to herbicides he is right 90% plus. The type of water used does make a minor difference but usually is not a game stopper. I personally like to use soft water with a surfactant. But if soft water was not easy for me to get I would use hard water, rain water, pond/stream water provided I could do so with out plugging up my sprayer. Most important when using any herbicide is to use the PPE. I personally like to wear my respirator (not just a dust mask), rubber gloves, and goggles.

Also what seeds would you recommend here in the southeast for a fall food plot? Thanks. Enjoyed the video
@viarbusiness4 жыл бұрын
Question Jeff. Do you ever have to worry about when that buckwheat goes to seed? Technically if it’s in seed even though you broadcast into it, Roll it and spray it wouldn’t the buckwheat germ with the other seeds?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97514 жыл бұрын
They are a welcome compliment if there is some growth. They do not compete well with the other crops and they can be a welcome addition for food. And then when the first frost hits they are completely dead and go away quickly. You don't get enough volume, but I have added buckwheat in Fall blends in the past...back in the mid 2000s. Works ok, but doesn't add much to the Fall plot. Not s concern at all...

For the plot start are u adding that to it glyphosate in the same sprayer at the same time and spraying or are u spraying one then cleaning the sprayer and spraying the next? Second what is the typical seeding rate for brassicas 3lbs per acre, 6lbs per acre? Thanks Eric
@garyjones50934 жыл бұрын
If you set the Earthway spreader at one, do you have to go back over the plot with the setting higher to spread the peas and beans that weren’t able to come out of the spreader gate because the seeds were to big? I assume that’s how you do it. If the gate was open wide enough to spread the bigger seeds, you’d waste a lot of the smaller brassica seeds. Just curious.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97514 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary! I do not mix the brassica and larger seeds ever. I spread them on different sides of the plots. Sometimes I recommend spreading Brassicas and peas and even beans all on the same side of the plot...but then you would have to spread separately.
@garyjones50934 жыл бұрын
Whitetail Habitat Solutions . Ok. I just know some seed blends come with larger seeds like beans and peas in with very small brassica seeds, and I have made the mistake of opening the gate to wide to accommodate the larger seeds, and running way short because I waste the smaller seeds. As they say, you learn by your mistakes, not your success. I learned the hard way. I was just curious how you did that. I assumed it was two different applications. I guess based on your answer, I was correct on my assumption.

@markr.15474 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video Jeff. I ran into a problem last year with spreading those small brassica seeds .... seemed not enough and then I’d open it up a little and it was too much dispersed. This year the sweet feast suggested using 6-24-24 fertilizer so I saved some of the fertilizer and filled the spreader with it and then added the bag of the brassica blend and mixed it up thoughly into the bag. This enabled me to open the spreader to the 3 setting and I’m hoping it evenly spread the small brassica seeds. I have no results yet on how it worked but what do you think of this practice?

When is the best time to plant the pea, bean, and oats mix that you like using? I'm located at the TN/KY line. Didnt know if now is too soon? Thanks Jeff!

Do you recommend driving over brassica with atv tires to push in the soil? or not needed?

I needed this video, Jeff! You’re the man for the timely publishing of this video. I know you mentioned using urea but do you ever recommend the application of any granular fertilizer? If so what kind for the brassicas/radishes/turnips?

Hey Jeff, I have been watching a lot of your videos and I want to just plant straight Winter Rye this hunting season. But the problem is the temperatures down here in Louisiana are mid 90s right now. Early September to mid September will still be in the low 90s. Would the rye still come up in this heat??

You’ve probably said it a thousand times but what’s the mix on the weed killer .The percentage? The amount per gallon doesn’t work for me, All I have room for is a plot in the woods with some direct sunlight. Thanks
