This is Why Starfield is One of the Best Space Games in History. The Starfield Review!
I have played a lot of space games in my time, but for me Starfield right now takes the cake! Starfield has a way of literally sucking you into its gameplay to the point you actually might convince yourself you were kidnapped by aliens. There have been multiple times I ended up playing all day then freaked out when the sun started to come up again. I mean I can barely stop playing long enough to even make content for Starfield cause I just can’t stop freaking playing it.
So how does Starfield do this? It’s the sheer volume of gameplay choices you get to make based on how you want to experience Starfield at any given time. Couple that with how in depth and attention grabbing the quests are in the game. You are going to get lost in Starfield for hundreds if not thousands of hours.
This is how good the story quests are in this game. My wife, bless her heart for being wrong, does not like space games at all really. Instead of doing her own thing she would sit there next to me for hours just watching me go through these quest chains. Which ultimately built to the point she was so sucked in she started offering dialog choices while we both progressed through the story step by step. Like seriously you don’t even need to enjoy a space game to really get sucked in by the gameplay and story in Starfield. No other space game I have played had this effect on my wife, or even myself. It’s that good.
I might love space games, but I am also a huge first person shooter junky. The PFS in Starfield is very good and can be extremely challenging depending on your difficulty setting. The weapon sounds are freaking top notch. The variety of weapons you can use to dispatch your foes in Starfield is bigly. Your enemies whether they are people or aliens in most cases actually have some intelligence. Most of the time anyways. If you are into FPS games you’re going to love Starfield.
There is no game out there that will let you build your own ship with customized interiors and it’s outward appearance. This aspect of Starfield absolutely blew me away. It’s literally French Chef kiss good. Sure in Elite Dangerous you can buy a ship then customize the interior modules, but you can never really walk inside them or customize the outward appearance of your ship. IMO this really takes Starfield to the next level. The moment you finalize your first ship build in Starfield you are going to get slammed by a massive amount of excitement as you rush inside to explore your new creation.
Talking about building things.. Base building itself in Starfield is glorious! Not only is it an exceptional way to level your character it has enough depth to keep you sucked in for hours upon hours. You will find yourself researching more and more base building components just so you can keep customizing your base. Really getting to the point it feels lived in and alive. All of which really doesn’t do much for you other than the roleplay aspect of Starfield. Which I am guilty of dumping many hours of gameplay into.
Looting in Starfield is so good it’s almost too good. Like any Bethesda game Starfield is no different. There is so much loot you will constantly become overweight out of greed. Your space companions can help some with that but realistically you’re going to load them up with loot then once again become overweight before completing your mission. Needless to say I love looting and scavenging in Starfield. A lot of the times when I'm out doing a mission I spend way more time looting than actually smoking the bad guys I’m there to smoke.
Pretty much every skill in Starfield has value, and considering how many skills there are you’ll need to be level 325 to get them all to level four. Currently I am level 241 and I still have a lot of skills I want to max out. Skills like persuasion, intimidation, diplomacy and the like are so good they are game altering although not completely necessary cause most disagreements can be settled with your big gun. Skills like lockpicking or the jet pack are required skills early on. Because if you don’t have them, you will regret it many times over...

One of the things I loved is how several of the questlines can feel like entirely different genres. The space ranger quest was great in how you get a revolver at the start of the questline that is actually good, even on Very Hard, to let you get that cowboy vibe as you travel to different systems applying your own brand of justice. For me that was my hook moment.

As a long-time player in Elite D. I wasn't sure about buying Starfield, was it going to be as exciting/frustrating as finally making it through the "letterbox" and successfully landing at a space-station? Was flying into combat and balancing your ship functions going to be as challenging? Answer, NO. However, the missions/side-quests and depth of the main storyline etc. etc. are second to none. Plus being able to craft/build your ships/outposts/home have blown me away. Where has all my free-time gone? At breakfast my wife now greets me with "Hi Stranger"! Indeed I totally agree with your comments Hawkes. Great video as always, keep 'em coming.

I would say that i have almost the same feeling towards it. I am at Lvl 38 at the Moment. Haven't done the Main Questline that much and never even tried building an Outpost yet. I'm at arounf 150 hours in. You see, i am often just in the Shipbuilder or walking around, roleplaying a bit. Since i read this kind of comment quite a lot, it is really interesting that a lot of players experience really similar things regarding this. The Loading Screens sometimes are absolutely uneccesary. If you skip the part with the Loading (in Neon for example), the Objects and physics still work fine. Same with some Doors. I absolutely feel the "doing Stuff fast" and you are in a constant Loading Screen. I kind of like it sometimes(!) that there is a pause before a big Talk or Situation. This works. The whole Game feels like small different Games stitched together and for me it works. I played Elite for Years, SC, NMS and other Games with Space as a theme. But Starfield kinda sits in the right spot for a Game that brings me joy. A lot. Last time was Snowrunner. Before that RdR2. Bugs. I had some. But tbh. Not THAT much. I had Bethesda Jank from time to time. I had Bugs that are more hilarious than bad. I had Bugs where i had to reload a bit. Or travel the System and come back. But in at the time of writing around 150h in and more to come, i consider that more than okay. Bugs do not get me out of my immersion. A word, that is used quite alot and demanded and sometimes i ask myself if people that demand immersionimmersionimmersion actually are able to get immersed by a Game. Because Starfiled is really immersive for me. Like you and thousand others, i find it hard to stop playing because there is so much to do if you want it. Ofc i also Played F3 until the Disc was glowing a couple of times since release. FNV the Same. Morrowind. F4 (i kind of liked it as a game tbh. It is really not that bad. If i want to get annoyed then yes. But look at it now. wow.). never player F76 and... yes i never completed Skyrim ansd Oblivion. Never. Just played a few hours and i was .. its not my Setting. I know what this game is and how it works. Maybe someday :D Or if People Mod Skyrim into Starfield lel. jk. Not that easy actually :D I am a Bethesda Bauplan Game Enjoyer. And to me, with how i like to play Videogames, this is their best yet. It needs work and smol and bigger things that could and i guess will improve. But i see Starfield as it is as a wonderful basis and core for a journey i can't even think of now. People will go nuts with this one. Already are. If i want to cry about how mods aren't official: Then i kinda really want to cry. Because its all there. And i run it unmodded now. Thats for later. I do not "need" Mods atm. Maybe a few visual Camerasettings and Stuff. But when i see people playing after guides to max out everything as fast as possible and then complain about how there is othing to do, well... I guess thats a you problem then. Thats not Call of Duty. :D I do not have that and i am thankful for that. I pity People that can't have fun wth this Software piece. Really. They are missing a lot. Then again, i miss out on most Multiplayer Games and i am fine with it.

also i am relieved to see you responding to it this way - I have always enjoyed your Elite Dangerous content and I got my first Anaconda following your guides. But no matter what they tried to add depth to Elite Dangerous it was still a mile wide and an inch deep. They somehow really nailed that balance with Starfield! I can't explain it. Yes I'd love to be free to dock my ship... only to get sick of it and buy a docking computer Sure I'd love to land, only to get the planetary approach autolander or whatever I would RATHER cut to the chase - and I guess it just took this game to make me realize that! I did have like 300 hours of fun charting new solar systems and lifeforms in Elite - that was cool. Yet still - fewer planets and systems, but I prefer Starfield. Didn't see that coming.

"a mile wide and an inch deep" ED expects you to make your own narrative and not follow a storyline, the 'inch deep' reflects more on yourself than the game.

I've played E. Dangerous, No Man's Sky, and Everspace 2 a fair bit leading up to this game. Space is by far my favorite motif for a game and for what I was looking for, Starfield nails it. I get that people may have wanted to fly around in space but... after putting about 100 hours into E. Dangerous, I can tell ya that the flying part is not the most exciting. But by the same Token, E. Dangerous is a game designed around that part. A lot of things can (not always do) but can happen and the fun for most is in the sim of the flight. It's A different genre IMO. Starfield is built around ground travel with space being a sort of through line on how you get from place to place. I can't really imagine having fun in this game if I had to manually travel to every single planet. I think Everspace 2 has a better balance of it, but that game is 100% in space you never leave your ship. I honestly find that Starfield has more fun planet exploring than No Man's Sky, more fun quests and storylines than Everspace 2, and isn't even in the same Genre as Elite Dangerous. The amount of times I would get lost (in a good way) just going to abandoned facilities, fighting my way through pirates or alien creatures to find treasure or stat boosts is staggering. I've played for 3 days of game time total now, and have only done 1 faction storyline (Which was really good!) I've barely begun the main quest, and I still want to just play more. This is everything I expected, and wanted, it to be. I have to wonder what exactly people were expecting from the game to make them hate it so much.

Outside of the main quest and its locations this game is very NMS in it random places that look the same over and over. The main quest, ship building and base building are really all this game has. They are great but you will quickly realize there isn't much depth to the Starfield bird bath. They took a page out of No Man's Sky playbook by putting a bunch of random crap all around so the kids think its something special.

I agree on the landing an taking off. It doesnt need to be a pass or fail type of thing just a simple but engaging way to land, and dock onto stations. Doesnt need to be much but considering so many other games in the genre do let you land with total control having a load screen feels weird. But hey at least if you want to XP farm it's not drawn out longer than it needs to so that's a plus at least.

In the category "close to realistic" spacegames, Elite Odyssey (EDO) has virtually no competition at all EDO is a massive sandbox game with an entire 1:1 fullscale realistic Milkyway galaxy where players do have complete freedom to move around Milkyway galaxy stats in EDO as well as in reality: 100.000 ly diameter 4*10^11 starsystems, with planets, moons, ringsystems etc. Orbital mechanics, simulation of gravity of celestial bodies etc. It's a sandbox game, so we aren't bound to any storyline >20.000 populated starsystems with approx 275.000 stations, in human populated region "the bubble", a little spec in our galaxy, just 1000 ly across I can imagine that many with some knowledge about astrophysics and spacetravel as it could be in a distant future, initially inspired by Star Trek series back in the days, would value a realistic spacesim with a good simulation of our own galaxy (the milkyway), including orbital mechanics according to the Newtonian law of gravitation EDO is the only option Some planets/ moons even tidal locked to their star/ planet as in reality In EDO you would recognize stars from our visible night sky (Stellarium link), as well as known stars from the ESA mission's Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues are included Elite Dangerous contains a vast 1:1 scale simulation of the Milky Way galaxy based on real scientific principles elite-dangerous.fandom.com/wiki/Galaxy The Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues www.cosmos.esa.int/web/hipparcos/catalogues Stellarium Web Online Star Map www.stellarium-web.org/

You said the Outposts were deep, but from what I have experienced they are extremely shallow. Maybe I need to invest more time into them? The prefabs I can see are like 3 shapes. You cannot have open air doors, they are all airlocks even on planets with breathable atmospheres. Maybe I am mistaken? I also can only seem to have 3 hired hands per outposts? Currently only about 115 hours in due to life getting in the way and I am vastly enjoying the game, but the outpost system really seems lackluster.

The other day, I was exploring a moon when I noticed some tall mountains. No point of interest. No ship to murder the crew for. Just a mountain. So I climbed the mountain just to have a look. As I was standing at the peak, I saw something on the horizon. It didn't take long to realize that it was the rings of the planet I was orbiting. So I stood there, in the icy cold with Frostbite, watching a planetrise. Point of the story is that Starfield is all of the game play elements, but it's also those quiet moments. Ten minutes or so that I got to allow myself to imagine being on a distant moon. "That's why I play Starfield" has become my mantra whenever I experience something awesome. I do have my complaints, but I find those tolerable when stacked against the immersion.

Standards need to be set higher! This is a MEH game. There is so much content that wasn't followed through on, inconsistencies all over the place. There was little to no QA put into dialog trees and in many places the dialog options have little to no effect, you get the same response no matter which line you use. Only 39 main line related quests...earlier BDS had over 300. If you like running through games at high speed with little interaction with the various NPCs and don't do many side quests or visit many sites then it is an ok game. Otherwise you will see how little effort was put into its contents and will become bored and disappointed that you spent so much money for so little.

Pretty gutted to say the least as it was essentially the only game i put any available solo hours into..lots of hours..knowing the profile copy/transfer was coming I guarantee that my final 100 hrs+ were spent material gathering as i was not wanting to do that again on pc given the chance. If Starfield was not on Gamepass I'd probably not have played it. If it was taken off of Gamepass tomorrow I'd immediately purchase it. This has definitely filled a gap and regardless of what it does right and wrong its a comfortable balance. I found it apt that your first ship is called Frontier,a tip of the hat perhaps? One thing i will say...If you never ground it out on Elite you'll never know how easy ship building is..

I really love Starfield. Probably the best game BGS has made in my opinion. The story and gameplay sucked me in more than Morrowind or New Vegas did, which I think is pretty significant. HOWEVER, what I’m truly thankful for about Starfield, is that it turned me onto another space game that is truly MY chef’s kiss *muah* of a space game which is *drumroll please* … Star Citizen! (How I have not seen hide nor hair of star citizen despite it being in alpha for so long BEFORE playing Starfield… now that.. that eludes me) 200+ hours clocked in Starfield, but now my attention is on star citizen, and your channel is helping me out a lot learning the ropes! Thanks Hawkes!

Even with some awesome gameplay, there are too many issues to give it more than 3 stars. The bugs multiply the longer you play. They become game stoppers!

Finally a positive video, thanks. Most channels are looking for flaws in the game and how to bring down Bethesda with nitpicking. I've already have lost 84 hours in the game and oh boy I like, just to see that I only scratched the surface. And I'm not a space game fanatic, the most fear I got was flying, as most games are sims and very difficult to master. But it can be simple too apparently, the space battles are easy to master once you get the hang of it. I'm as excited as Fallout 4 came out and I'm affraid of the consequences🙂 I've already spent 800 hours in SKyrim and 1400 hours in Fallout 4, so Starfield will be no better 😁

I wish the companions could tell me where some place was in town. Agree with that dislike. Also would like vendors to have more credits. Would like something better to help with directions on planets when exploring. The blue map with the icon does not do it for me I am forever going in the wrong direction . It is a great game. I am just starting outposts and that is bit confusing

This game isnt good. I keep trying to play it and just find myself falling asleep. Building ships is fun but you literally hardly fly anywhere just teleport place to place. Space combat feels more like a mini game than anything. Like is this really our standard? This game is like a well made fallout mod nothing more nothing less.

Half cooked game with tonload of loading screens, heavy reuse of FO4 + Skyrim mechanics (in a worse way) adding NMS science to it, no exploration but for below 10km loaded tiles, terrible perf for a Creation Engine game, meh main storyline, side quests are good and ship building ok tho. Best space game in history? Give us a break... Mods eventually will bring it from mid to good

Used the money to bye spaceborne and pay of my replacement gear box and inner primary seals. get ready for the Bethesda micro transactions, Their coming. You are one few who claims to this game is great. Least in star citizen i can go any where any time.( When the servers are stable for a bit), Bethesda made a lot of claims and delivered non. I have been playing video games since the mid 70`s i think Space invaders. IMHO this game should finally put a nail in Bethesda`s coffin.
