Agreed 39mm mark 2 is the sweet spot.

The best one is the new 40mm. Technically without any doubt (AR crystal, new movement w/ 70h power reserve) and subjectively, more balanced ration between bracelet and diameter and lug to lug size. Just my opinion. Great watch in all diameters.

For me it came down to the glossy vs matte dial but technically speaking the 40mm is better

I was torn between the 39mm 214270 Mk2 and the new 40mm reference. I feel like the proportions of the 40mm and the taper of the bracelet are just nowhere as appealing as the 39mm, so I went for the 39mm and love it! No such thing as a bad watch, everyone has their preferences.

You need to know that the 40 is not 40mm. Not sure what the 39 actually measures. To me neither dial is perfect, but the 40 has much better proportions even though it needed to actually be 40mm. You do not have to go grey, you just wait a while. The 36 is probably the best version even though way too small for me ; )

The 39 is a little smaller than the 40 but to me it came down to the dial and price, which is why I prefer the 39

@@TimeBaum I feel really conned that the 40 is not 40mm, but it is what it is and I still love it. It's the 21mm lug width that I wanted mainly and it was also the current one that was available from the AD. He said he had a 39 but I am not sure if this was pre owned.

Also I like that “EXPLORER ” is placed on the bottom half of the dial only on the 39mm, just like the other professional models such as the submariner. Whereas on the 36/40 explorers the dial becomes a little busy on the top…

You can’t go wrong with any Explorer IMMHO and as a long-standing fan of the model, I love the two tone, it has a sort of FU attitude and I can’t wait to put mine on a NATO

Love that 39mm. Long Island Watch has the Manhasset 36mm for around $300 which leaves about $7,000 in my pocket, I know it’s an homage, I just can’t justify, so far, a watch over $1,000 even $500 really when there are so many reasonably priced watches that tell you the time and contain decent movements.

Its weird people say they favour 20mm lug width with bigger case shoulders, yet also seem to like integrated bracelets that look more like 21mm lug width with smaller shoulders 🤨

I’m with you 💯 on this. I’ve bought and sold the 214720 about four times since 2020. I couldn’t resist selling for more than I paid. Now, I’m finalizing my collection in my older years. I bought a 2020 totally clean with B&P for $6950. This is my keeper 214270. I’m not a flashy in your face guy. This is the Rolex for me! Well, maybe a 114300 if I find a nice price 😂.

Many people prefer the 36mm size but personally it looks too small on my wrist. Still a great watch!
