Construction and quality is less important than sidewall height for impacts, and unless you're running those on a Truck/SUV, a pothole can easily wreck your shit. Forged or not, aluminum is way more likely to fracture than steel and performance-oriented wheels will sacrifice thickness for weight over OEM. A pothole badly bent our 2019 Kia's 17" OEM wheel, and it was a total bitch trying to find a place to repair it to my surprise. I would've rather it had the 16s since low profile tires ride like absolute shit for minimal gains and bigger wheels just add needless weight.

OEM wheels can be hit or miss, depending on manufacturer and specific wheel. Wheels generally don't get made by the car manufacturer but by an outside brand. As a metallurgist, I have to let you know that looking at the fracture surface will only give you part of the story, and even then, the differences only really become apparent at high magnification. What you also need to do is look at a polished cross section of each material, which will show you the largest differences in grain structure. Cast aluminium grades generally have a larger than normal amount of silicon present, which helps the flow characteristics while molten. However, it also causes long silicon-rich phases, and intermetallics, which typically have much worse mechanical properties than the aluminium, especially when it comes to fracture toughness (like you tested here). What forging helps with is not only to refine the grain structure and 'squeeze out' any porosity, but also to break up any large or interconnected intermetallics, which would otherwise be the dominant crack path during an impact.

So much "why?" in this video. Remember when Jobe was like "Here is my car, it doesn't run." What if, instead of whatever the hell this was, you fixed Jobe's car and filmed it.

honestly, i dont see a big problem with buying knock off parts, with the exception of safety equipment (seats, helmets, harness' etc) i think there's a place, sometimes people who dont make lots of money just want to make their cars look nice and unique, and in order for them to achieve that, a cheap knock off bodykit or replica wheels or whatever fill that demands, i know buying legit supports the actual designers and creators of these parts, but sometimes thats either not possible if they're rare parts, or just way out of budget for any regular joe

Not to mention I would guess most people buy reps and have no issues.

@@zallas_99 you're right, also why isn't everyone driving around in Lamborghinis or McLaren's, like just save up 5head, just a thought
@zallas_992 жыл бұрын
@@antiricergt maybe my comment came across poorly, I just mean that if you want something nice/cool/expensive or whatever, there's no need to cheap out and buy replicas. You could just save up to buy the thing you want. Sure it takes longer to get what you want, but everything worth doing is hard. It's also more satisfying when you eventually achieve your goal.

A cool video idea but sadly literally none of those tests have anything to do with the usability or safety of any of these parts for the consumer. Basically clickbait at this point.

Donut really needs to go the “wheeler dealers” route. Start with a cheap car, make one or more videos showcasing the work they would do on the car and then flip it, working their way up one car at a time. Come on Donut overlords, make it possible!

The point of these parts is 100% exclusively to look cool. "But a spoiler saves a couple seconds on the track" You're not going to the track, you're going to the mall, maybe a couple donuts at a car meet once in a while. Your parts could be made of cardboard. And if you do go to the track, you can save 30 seconds by just driving better, the two seconds gain from a spoiler aren't going to matter. (I don't know who i'm ranting at here)

Love when you guys test stuff. I always assumed that ppl went cheap on safety stuff not cuz they think it's as good as the name brand equipment but think that it's still better than the stock stuff. I'd love to see you do videos testing cheap safety equipment like this seat against stockseats and other stock safety equipment.

there was a well known singer here in brazil that died in a crash caused by bad wheels in his Range Rover Sport. His driver changed the wheels for 'prettier' and bigger ones that weren't the real deal, than flipped the RR Sport in a high speed crash when the wheels didn't stood the forces.. Allegedly he also was way over the speed limit

I have been into rims lately. It's amazing how cast rims can cost over $1,000. The better forged wheels are much stronger. For most vehicles, cast works fine but if you drive a high horse power car, and drive aggressively, you really want a high quality, forged wheel or the wheels can literally warp and crack.

I don't think I'm going to be driving my car down the sidewalk with no tires on the wheels, no front quarterpanels, and randomly have an anvil fall off of the roof of the building exactly on top of one of the wheels, and if the guy with Nunchucks started beating on my car, I would tell him to "say hello to my little friend" who's name is Samuel Colt!

Doesn't matter whether you get real or fakes. When a wheel is bent or cracked, you're still gonna replace the whole wheel as opposed to getting it fixed, just gonna cost as much for a brand new wheel. You just get bragging rights with real rims.
