Problem is it's getting harder to find people to admire. Seems like everyday great historical figures' histories are being rewritten and doucheified by pessimistic "moral" activists; sanctifying their own existence by digging up unsubstantiated allegations of these figures, then vilifying them beyond public redemption.
@Thomasfrank3 жыл бұрын
@@maxi-me there's certainly some truth in what you say, though it's also true that things like hero worship and the "great men" theory of history tend to hide or ignore many character flaws. Putting that aside, though, it's possible to admire someone while also acknowledging their flaws. Steve Jobs was abusive, but he was also a genius. We can learn from both of those things - how to live, and how not to live.

there can never be a video that 'changes your life'. Change is not something that can be caused by external motivation or inspiration. It's internal and does not even need motivation. "Exploration" is actually a nice description for this. When I play a fantasy rpg I am having fun and am excited constantly because I explore high and low for better loot, etc. Of course, real life isn't actually a fantasy rpg but how do I find new topics, thoughts and insights? By exploring. If I only stay in my zone and do what I already know all day, I'll probably get bored. So, I have to explore and to learn/ try something new is already fun because it is new.

As a medical student we need to have a tangible type of platform whatsoever and i feel burnt out so easily because at the back of my mind I know all of this stuff at this moment are useless and that scares me a lot in the future. i experienced the plateau of my burn out that no advice will regain my thrive but trust me time will always be the cure just be patient in all things and accept the situation that it is not your fault it is how it is. -I'm diffidently sure it is unbearable to face all the stress without human connection and as an introvert we need human connection in order for having to look forward and to feel belongingness in a specific circle group of people. mental health is very important.

For the longest time I realized my separation between who I used to be in my teens and who I am now. The biggest thing I thought I left behind was my extreme fandom for anime, video games, movies, series etc... I have moved into a place where I want to become more intelligent, but get easily disheartened by the level of comprehension required for some of the books I try dig into. But after seeing this I realized the fandom doesn't have to die with my teen spirit, but rather be transformed into an inquiry of the people I look up to, Joseph Campbell, Alan Watts, Terrence Mckenna and Jordan Peterson, and take that fandom into what inspired them and what moves me now. Thanks Thomas, amazing content good sir

If only it was that easy. I haven't even left my country (and I'm living not in the US but in a small european country) for my entire life. I feel so cranked, limited and suppressed by both myself and my environment (even before COVID). It's gone to the point I start to struggle in university because I have zero motivation anymore and don't see the big picture. I really want to explore but I'm so dependent on my environment (other people etc.) right now. The worst part is all people I know (even my family) has no idea about that and thinks I'm a focused, determined and confident person but I'm not.
@girish92423 жыл бұрын
How're you doing now? I'm in basically the same situation right now.

@@girish9242 Oh, glad you ask. About 2 weeks ago, some fellow students and I started catching up an old university team project we decided to finish now in march. And things have changed drastically to the better for me. I see my mental health getting better every day. I feel more fulfilled than for a very long time and really enjoy the social interaction I have these days. The project is going strong and we're doing some big progress which really boosts my confidence now. However, the final exams were really bad but fortunately I get a "second chance" because this semester I was not obliged to pass any exam. I kind of tick it off now and start looking forward. Next semester starts in 3 weeks and I'm confident that I have some more motivation. I also have contacted some other friends I haven't contacted for months during the pandemic and started to see some of them regularly now. Well, aside from the fact that I'm more psychologically stable now I still feel the desire to be "more free" and travel in other countries, etc. I really hope I will stay this motivated throughout the next time and I'm definitely still planning on going into vacation this year (my last vacations were in 2016) if the pandemic situation does allow it. Since you wrote, you are in the same situation, I really suggest you to get off KZbin. I actually just read your comment because I only go onto KZbin every Sunday and received an E-Mail. The last three weeks, I just visited KZbin on 3 days. And you will notice that you will have so much more time to work on things that really bring you forward. After some days, you won't miss it anymore. And really really important: uninstall the KZbin App on your phone and only visit it through your computer with the extension "DF Tube" so you're making sure you will not get down the rabbit hole by recommended videos. Cheers
@girish92423 жыл бұрын
@@cdefgah4343 I'm glad your situation has gotten better. I'm also trying to find something fulfilling, like finding a project to work on or learning about more stuff in general. But I'm not quite motivated to do anything and I'm still unsure of the bigger picture or what I even enjoy academically. My college is still having an online semester, and I don't know when it'll end, but hopefully when it does my situation will improve with the campus experience. I probably should use less KZbin, but I'm on enough apps that I'd probably find a way to compensate that time elsewhere. I gotta work on minimizing all of that. Well, I've been trying, and it hasn't worked. I think the only way it'll change is when I find something fulfilling and I'm able to interact with people on campus. Anyway, thanks for your response and your suggestion about using KZbin, I'll try implementing that.

Before you got to the "punchline" of this video (around 8 minutes) I saw a slightly different direction it could've taken that actually inspired me even more. The idea I saw was that once you get yourself out into the universe and offer your services---you've chosen your niche and personal brand---your clients and followers will not only elevate your position as an authority in the service (because you are good), they will let you know where you might explore to help them even more, thus initiating a new direction for you to study. They can help you see where you lack certain knowledge in your field or in any creative extension of that field. They can help you push your boundaries to seek new experiences because a) you build that broad knowledge base for connecting more dots and b) you want to help them improve and explore their own creative connections. In other words, if you don't know what to further explore, let the people you serve guide your inspirations.

Your advice has always been immensely powerful and has helped me throughout university (many years ago) and is continuing to aid me in my professional career. Just want to say thank you for all the awesome work you do and also to selfishly ask that you keep them coming!

This is such a good content idea. I have watched dozens of youtube videos on editing videos and I've learned. But without buying expensive video editing software and in the time of quarantine, find a physical mentor...I don't know how to improve.

Just some suggestions off the top of my head. Have you tried shadowing? TV stations, theatrical departments, even houses of worship. If you can't shadow, you might be able to buy time or get a mentor or more. Museums sometimes do video installations; someone has to shoot and edit them. Do you have Fiverr and/or Cameo in your area? You could contact those people - someone has to shoot and edit those videos. I saw a regular listing the other day of want ads for people in the arts. I'll find it again and post it here. Maybe you won't fit the job, but you could find people to get in touch with. Same with online sites like rhizome, for example. Keep up with the video watching and contact the creators you like and ask them, especially for someone in your area. People know people who know people, etc. You've probably already come up with most of these ideas, if not all. Hopefully one or two will strike a chord. :)

@@tramseyer thank you! I'll have to look into the Fiverr and Cameo thing and check the want ads...maybe put one in myself. 🙂

Great video, thank you! I've read Neuromancer a while back and it didn't seem particularly innovative, but just because his ideas have inspired countless books and movies. Another one of my favourite incipits is "The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed"

Every new video of yours just feels visually more extravagant than the one before!! I can see the amount of time and effort put into this video and it really does make a big impact. Thank you for the content Thomas :)

Me in the last couple of days: I've been feeling so uninspired lately. Thomas: This is why you don't feel inspired. Me: O.O

Mad respect Thomas Frank for raising the bar in every way, but most importantly the earnestness and depth of the script.

Fellow Coloradan here. This is one of your best videos yet. Seriously, amazing work. Also, I read Snow Crash when I was 15 which led to Neuromancer and the rest of Gibson's work, nice to see him mentioned here.
