Wow. Well done Mashed. I'm so impressed by the accuracy that I'm subscribing. All of this. Literally all of this. I worked at a Quiznos almost a decade ago and this is exactly what happened to our owner. - She could only buy ingredients from corporate and they overcharged for pretty much all of the ingredients. - She hated the promotional sales because we weren't compensated for the coupons corporate was mass producing. - Subway was destroying Quiznos in marketing which didn't help. - They let another Quiznos open between us and another Quiznos that was already pretty close. Corporate didn't care if businesses failed and actually seemed to make it their main source of income. My boss tried to warn the guy that was opening the franchise really close by, but he didn't listen. His franchise went under in less than a year. My boss had to take out mortgages to keep the franchise afloat. She eventually dug her way out, but it was a pretty bad ride. Loved the food, but screw Quiznos.

I remember Quiznos their sandwiches were LIGHT YEARS better than Subway, wasnt even a competition. You actually enjoyed their sandwiches and felt satisfied after eating them. I even got my brother hooked. Only issue was their price point and lack of locations(in NEW YORK CITY)
@afcgeo8825 жыл бұрын
I thought Quiznos wasn't well designed. It pretty much pushed ready-designed sandwich combinations onto its customers. The reason why Subway does well is because all of the ingredients are in front of you and you just say which ones you want. Quizno's didn't do that. They only offered maybe 10 different combos. Sure, you could custom order things, but you didn't see any pricing or availability for that. Then, they did something really odd. They toasted the sandwiches with the veggies already in them. That's just weird.

I remember those free sub coupons. When I used mine, the owner of the franchise lamented to me on how corporate instituted the coupons without the consensus of the franchisees and weren't going to reimburse for the sandwich cost. What a poorly run corporation and this video highlighted it.
@hotcrazycatladyme1685 жыл бұрын
So you still made him give you the free sub even as he was telling you how his business was being ruined by corporate? That's... cold. I mean how broke was he if the owner himself was the one even making the food?
@Publiclighthouse5 жыл бұрын
@@hotcrazycatladyme168 - No, the owner wasn't making the food. He had a paid worker. Though I did have reservations about taking the free sandwich, we had a conversation prior to me going through with the deal. He had first asked me if my coupon was fake because as it runs out, several people had passed through his restaurant having doctored/manipulated coupons in order to get a free sub. However, every Quizno's location had an electronic system that accepted some combination of a number and barcode that was on the coupon to verify whether it was real. So, I sort of felt accused, and rightly so based on the actions of people before me, and wanted to prove that what I had was legitimate. I didn't feel entirely comfortable taking the sandwich because I knew it wasn't going to be that good, but I had never tried Quizno's before and thought it would at least be a good intro to something besides Subway. I walked out of that franchise's door which had poor lighting, a dingy atmosphere and just felt overall "sticky" and thought to myself, "If this is a nail in the coffin for this business, I'm doing him a favor. I just don't think anyone should be pouring more money into this location." It was out of business within the year but the experience gave me new perspective on franchises and company-wide deals.

@emmettturner94525 жыл бұрын
Boco Corwin It wasn’t one coupon. It was one per customer, and customers were even abusing it to get extras. It really was hurting them. For example, gmail ignores periods in an email address username, but not all email systems do so Quizno’s system does not ignore it. If you used a service like gmail, you could simply add or move periods around in your email to get another coupon. For example, you could register for anonymous@gmail.com, anon.y.mous@gmail.com, a.n.o.n.y.m.o.u.s@gmail.com and all three coupons would arrive in the same inbox. Many locations would end up giving out several hundred, if not thousands of subs. No excuse for the managers being jerks to the potential customers, but it was definitely worse for them than you seem to imply.

I have noticed that as a trend in some of these restaurants that abuse the franchise model and ended up struggling or failing; they operate almost more like a MLM than a restaurant by making as much money as possible from the signing up of new franchisees than focusing on actual revenue and they just took it a step further by forcing them to buy unnecessarily high priced food

It was cheaper to run to walmart and buy a big thing of towels or toilet paper or cilantro then buying it from corporate. Passing on costs my ass. And you pay a lot of money for advertising compared to what you pay if you franchise a Wendys or McDonalds, for way less actual advertising. Problem is how it's for the most part up to corporate to decide how they want their franchises to succeed. This is a big part of sustainability though, it is no surprise how a lot of the businesses that operate like pyramid schemes tend to come and go rather quickly, whoever was expanding the franchises did not have any long term goals and just wanted to cash in at the expensive of their investors. The quality was also an issue. About 15 years ago, Quiznos charged double what Subway did, but the sandwiches were much higher quality. I was personally happy to go and pay more for a better sub. But when Subway started to clean up with their $5 Footlongs, Quiznos panicked and started trying to offer $5 large subs as well. But in doing so, the quality on everything dropped and dropped hard. The meat, cheese, bread, sauces, everything went down hill. After that, their prices started to creep back up but the quality was still poor, giving them an identity crises where it seemed like they couldn't decide if they wanted to be a higher-quality sub shop like Firehouse or a low-cost sub shop like Subway. This is what made me stop going and I can only assume others as well.

Yup, that was my experience.

exactly, Subway Slayed Quiznos with the $5 footlong. Only surviving Quiznos here in LA are rich areas (only 7 open). All the Quiznos decided to close down or they drop the name Quiznos to be some mom and pop sandwich joint but at this point they should of just closed their mom and pop business because subway/jersey mikes/firehouse are literally taking all potential customers. I feel bad just writing this

Yeah it's true. I started going there back when I was in high school around the early-mid 00's, they had one right down the street from my school so I used to go there all the time, I remember getting their chicken subs because I really liked them at the time. I remember them being really good back then, it was more expensive than Subway but you could see and taste what you were paying for. Then I was going to college in the mid-late 00's, and I remember the quality dropping dramatically during that time period. I just remember one day going in to get a chicken sub, being very disappointed with what I got, and I think that was the last time I ever stopped in one.

As someone who worked at the Quiznos corporate office, this tells about 1/4 of the reason why Quiznos went from ~5000 stores (US and internationally) to less than 200 now. The biggest reason Quiznos closed is the original $800 million + in debt obligations created by founder Rick Schaden when he departed the company to leave for Smashburger. Second biggest reason on top of that was that there was a recession while franchise owner margins were slim. This is when Subway came out with the $5 footlong to offset this hardship while Quiznos gave discounts and free subs and hurt the franchise owners even more. 3rd biggest reason is they would sell a franchise to anyone and everyone for dirt cheap and had a bunch of owners who should not have bought a store, not to mention a store in a horrible location which was likely. We went from 2000 stores to 5000 in a matter of no time. FYI, those bad ads you spoke of actually created conversation and increased revenue.

I went in to a Quiznos once. I think I ordered a turkey bacon sub, and I always get the same stuff on my subs. Basically I wanted to add pickles and didn't want olives. They were like "it doesn't come with pickles", I say "I know... Can you add them?" "no it doesn't come with them" "uhh, you can't just add them and charge me?" "no" "ok fine..." They proceed to make the sub with olives. "Hey that was no olives on that" "It comes with them" "I don't want olives, just leave them off" "No it's supposed to come with them" "ok forget it" And I left.

I don't believe Subway has a high profit margain either. Their franchise owners don't make a ton each year, still have overhead, have to have a high net worth, and pay a $35,000(?) franchise fee. And that's one of the cheaper franchise stores to get into.
@indysilver_025 жыл бұрын

I had always suspected that corporate was the problem here though, because with a superior product it was always mystifying to me to see how the stores seemed to struggle so much, and they didn't seem to have any fewer customers in them than any other fast food place, nor were their prices out of line with the market at all. My wife and I used to live close to a Quiznos and we would hit it up about once a week as part of our dinner rotation. I loved their Baja Chicken Sandwich. I often wondered why they all started to disappear because their sandwiches were surprisingly amazing for a chain sandwich shop. I’ve always hated Subway. Subway always tries to work the whole weight loss angle because they cut cost by not putting any meat in your sandwich. You get a foot long hoagie that’s practically all vegetables and no meat. One day out of desperation I thought I’d try Subway’s cheese steak since I had no other place to go. When I saw them grabbing what looked like hot roast beef sitting on tinfoil under a heat lamp I was like, “WTF?” Well I gave it a try since I didn’t want to judge a book by its cover. Needless to say I have never been back to a Subway in years. I would just assume starve then patron a Subway again.

When I ordered my cheesesteak the guy behind the counter grabbed one of these tinfoil packets and dumped the meat contents in my roll. I distinctly remember thinking that Subway must save time by not actually cooking the steak on the grill at the time of order. This was some kind of hot meat prepared before I got in line that was already portioned in a tinfoil wrap. It’s what I saw. It tasted like roast beef that had been sitting under an expo heat lamp for God only knows how long. 🤢
