@@NYG5 Amazing, you want a system that punishes aggressive plays, such good game design. By that logic might as well make blocking always negative because it takes more effort to push buttons than to hold back or down back. You also realize just how big the throw break window is in Tekken? Throw breaks honestly deserved the changes they got in T8 because they were borderline useless at high level T7 play.

@@huffee The chain grabs are pure 50/50s, they all look like regular 1+2 throws, so you can only guess right. But throws like Giant swing, Shining wizard and many other single command grabs have very distinct throw animations. You have to visually identify the starting animation and break it that way. You won't be able to break them easily without having played against many Kings, practiced and memorized the animations after many many hours. But you can accelerate the throw break success by simply setting them up in practice mode at random intervals and try to break them.

Watch the video again. Much more valuable to use your replays if anything, but just play matches and work on it in real time, every time. Real players are not sitting there cycling through throws on an invisible timer, they're moving around, doing other strings, and trying to catch you with throws. If you see the throw coming from a mile away, the break is much easier than practicing an unrealistic circumstance that's closer to someone doing a random throw on round start.

Good tip for controller players/beginners. I play on arcade stick and play multiple characters. I don’t use 1+2 as often on some characters and multi button inputs are easier on stick so I always break them with the 2 buttons. But when I played on controller, I was definitely spamming tf out of Left trigger to break 1+2 lol.

When I started playing Tekken the idea of "just look at the hands to know which button to press to break" was insane to me. Like, how tf is that even possible when you have to pay attention to everything else? I can break on reaction, if that's all there is to it but I sure as hell don't look carefully at which arm is the opponent's character extending first. In T7 it was way easier, and I did break a couple of them (mostly accidentally, though). Now in T8 I broke more of them than I ate. I don't know if that's because everybody's just doing the 1+2 throws or what, but it just kinda works now. Still, I think that the arm thing is ridiculous. I get it, and it does make sense, but it just doesn't seem possible to my puny brain.

Nobody can answer that question for you, but like Aris said, this isn't the type of thing where it's that helpful to go into practice mode or use a training tool. Just play. It's way way way more about learning your specific opponent's style and tendencies. Like everything in Tekken, it's a cumulative experience where you simply cannot react to a situation unless you've seen it before and out forth the effort to recognize it. I'm in a weird grey area where I do break throws, but not by reacting to the hands, I just react to being thrown, and I use the throw break that makes the most sense in context. For example, I mostly break 1+2 in general but especially at the wall with characters that have wall-splatting throws. It works most of the time, but then a character with a complete throw game like Jin will come around and they will start throwing the shit out of me and then I realize I'm a huge fraud. I'm actually surprised how little the average player will try to throw you, even well into Fujin and above. They don't really try that hard to expose me.

I'll have to disagree on the throw break reward. Playing against characters that have telegraphed 1, 2 or 1+2 throw is fine. It's very easy to break throws once you've practiced breaking them enough. Still, the reward you get is not as good as the reward the opponent gets if they connect. The situation is: 1 - You get not to lose HP; and nothing happens to your opponent; or 2 - You take 40+ damage, and will have to guess the Oki afterwards. It's objectively not a fair trade. Things get even worse against King, who has real grab mix ups that are not telegraphed. King can attempt a GS that looks like a 1+2 throw break, but it's a 1 break. The window is shorter compared to other throws. It's free damage, even if the opponent is able to roll after it, but absurd damage if it hits the wall. And King goes completely unpunished if you break it. Chain throws is a pure guessing game, you either guess one of the 3 options correctly, or you don't. If you are extremely unlucky to guess all the chain wrong, it's more than half your health bar gone. But what do you get if you break it? You just get to continue playing the neutral game. I'm used to breaking throws, I've been doing that consistently for 7+ years. But it's undeniable that the risk/reward, specially for King who has a KNEE hopkick - mind you, is extremelly advantageous for him. If we would to see it from another angle, at least on the King matchup: It's like dealing with a launcher that you'll have to guess - not react, if it's coming mid or low, and it will be safe regardless of where it's hitting. Because the damage of a chain throw is basically the same of a combo or mini-combo. I'm not implying that King, or any other throw for that matter, should be heavily punishable when they are broken. But the advantage for breaking them should be better than it is now for the player who was able to break it. Specially now where throws are way stronger, punishing/becoming unbreakable against power crushes and becoming near impossible to break on CH. I believe that, this way, throws would be a move to throw at a specific time, with a specific goal in mind based on what you've learned from your opponent so far, rather than a cheap way to get a free damage on a lucky bet for no cost or risk. Either way, I advice everybody just to accept what the game is, and go to practice mode. The way I learned breaking throws was recording Dragunov to perform his 3 variations of command grabs, a duckable fast string like b4,3, yet another duckable string like b2,1,3 a fast move that is punishable on block like his df2, and finally a solo snake edge like his db3. I would practice that on a daily basis, and it made my defenses against options like those very consistent.

The whole grab system this game has fails to do what fighting games made a grab for. I wish it was just like Street Fighter, you guess a grab coming then you just hit grab no guessing game outside a grab input and that is it. Grab was meant to break defense and add to the mind game but in tekken grabs are not able to do that. The worst part is if you don't spend weeks learning all the grab motions to be able to react then it will destroy you so it's a scrub killer but useless outside that, except for king because he has forced guessing on a system that still is crap.

Hes wrong about practing breaking in practice mode - set the opponent to do 3 throws and a low and a mid. Its not perfect but it will absolutely help you improve

For me it is like saying what you get for blocking hellsweep is not eating lows so hellsweep should be safe imo throws (at least those 50/50 ones) should be at minimum -10

For all of tekke history, I sucked at breaking throws. I decided in SF6 and MK1 to practice breaking through since it's mostly universal. Now in T8 I feel like a God at it.

Be happy this ain’t VF4 or Vanilla VF5 where there was multiple throw escape which essentially you input every possible throw break to option select it. Now, in VF5FS you just hold guard and punch while guardihg and just go forward neutral or back to tech based on the last input of the throw. In the one we didn’t get (VF5R) they had this lazy throw escape and multi throw.
