I enjoyed this video as always. It doesn’t make me want to rush out and obtain a horizontal mill for any number of reasons but I totally agree with your assertions on machine tool ownership. It is a complete joy to be able to make a bracket, spacer, adapter or piece of tooling on demand. The fact that it might take $20K worth of machinery is completely incidental. Carry on, music or no.

I agree with the sentiment. I struggle to find projects for my tools sometimes when all I really want to do is make chips. The little doodads we make out of steel and aluminum could usually be 3D printed, but I will never pass up an excuse to get oil on my hands and chips on my boots when the option is available.

You are so right, how much stuff do we see in the trash at just needs a new piece for it, so being able to make that part is a bonus of having the machines, in my eyes. It is also better that the cheap part that broke, which would make the whole thing junk.

Honestly, the one BIG thing that these are missing is a quill like the HBMs have. This one is certainly a lot of fun to use, and a very cool and "stylish" old machine. But IMHO, the Bridgeport is a lot faster and easier to use if you're just trying to get stuff done.

That may be a five dollar part you can buy but being that it is bad, it will break (or it will facilitate breaking something else way more expensive). And then you have to buy another 5 dollar part (hopefully not the more expensive thing). And another. And so on. By the time you add up how much you spent on all the "five dollar" parts around the house, you were much better buying a machine and making all those parts. Hopefully just once. Ask me how I know. And once in a blue moon, you need a really expensive part that you can not afford to buy but now, that you have machines, you can make. It may not be the same top quality, but it won't be far. And the savings, well, sometimes the savings on one part alone can pay for the entire machine. One thing that amazed me was that even a talentless non-machinist like myself can easily produce a "five dollar" part in a completely different quality league to what is available commercially most of the time. And that was using just a cheap mini lathe and equally cheap tools.

First of all I enjoy all of your videos. I got my first machine to make "stuff" just random whatever stuff. It looked like fun. It was fun. Then I got my second and I discovered all the machine tools I could make for my other machine... Then there was more... A lathe with a transmission. Now I can thread! If only I could make things really flat with a awesome surface finish... Then there was a surface grinder. Then a free scrap ad, and another surface grinder. And another ad and another machine. I may have gone too far this time though. I's a Webb knee mill and it is 2 tons! Luckily I have a garage it will fit in now. Unluckily all the rest are in the basement of my old house and I gotta move them all up and out and over. I've been so busy setting everything up and migrating it all I never get to make anything anymore. It is indescribable though, the realization of automatically looking for a piece of scrap to make something i need instead of looking for a parts catalogue,
