Why did this make me tear up? Because our GSD was so reactive and I could have given him a much better life. He passed away at the age of 13 about 5 years ago and we are now planning on getting another dog. She will reap the rewards of calm leadership.

I reacted with tears and the same thoughts too. I lost my very sweet but very reactive pittie mix last March. Impressive handling and video, wish in all the training and personal lessons we had I had learned how to do this, and my girl would've had a better life. Looking forward with optimism to my next pup, as you are.

Thank you for this! I got on to watch this video today because I went to go on a run with my dog and my neighbor was out with her dogs (who my dogs hates) and slipped out of his leash and bolted for them. He, being an Aussie, herded them and ran around them in a circle biting and nipping and barking at them. He wouldn’t listen to me for what felt like forever till I finally picked him up and carried him away. Thankfully no one was hurt or injured. He loves other dogs but once he doesn’t like certain dogs, he hates them. I felt hopeless till I watched this video and found it very helpful! Thank you so much for the advice.

I am going to fill out the connect questions to hopefully link up with you guys. We are in upstate New York and have an almost year old German shepherd who is fear reactive with pretty much everything not at home and even in the yard. I want her to be my psychiatric service dog but my trainer said she may never be able to do public access work because of her reactivity. She is not aggressive at all.

Service dogs are the heroes of the dog world. As a trainer myself it’s hard to tell people their dog may not be cut out for that type of work. Usually when they show those behaviors chances are the dog wouldn’t pass the test. You have to remember a service dog needs to be neutral in every single possible setting and that includes areas with other dogs that are probably not that well behaved. I wish you luck my friend.

Great video as always. One thing I liked specifically was the trainer with the nirvana shirt explaining situational nuance around inside versus outside turning when approaching a distraction and a build starts in the dog. He talked about feeling what the dog needs to help him be better and guiding the walk better

I have a new foster pitbull staffy from an NYC kill shelter and need all the help I can get. He had been starved, emaciated, with numerous cuts on him. Despite it was totally gentle and NON-reactive to other dogs until being in the shelter a month. :( The stress and fear made him severely dog reactive. He’s potty trained, knows all commands and is doing so far so good with crate training but the extreme reactivity is causing me to keep my own dog in just one room - this guy is in another room. I’m exercising both but am just so heartbroken at having to contain my own dog this way. I’ve fostered several before and never had this issue. I’m 10 yrs older now too so it’s just a lot. I’m consuming these videos and praying for help. I love this foster and want him to have a chance.

Tom, Have you ever done a video on training for people with mobility issues. I have recently moved to an apartment (from acreage) and use a cane in my right hand. My dog has not done much leash work and now he has to be walked out on a leash at all times. I have the most difficult time with reactivity and keeping my boy on a heel. I am using the herb springer to keep from pulling but it is difficult to manage a treat and the cane at the same time. I was wondering if you have/or plan on doing a video regarding these issues

I have made a lot of headway with my dogs reactivity (large part due to your advice). The main sticky point now is passing other dogs that are unsure and posture from distance. I can curb the outburst, but i want to train through it. Can you give any advice for training through passing worried posturing dogs.? Or maybe you have already done a useful video? Thanks!

I think I’m giving up on my reactive dog. I have resolved to the fact that although we have made tremendous progress with people and other dogs, he is still reactive to many other things and that’s just the way it’s going to be. He is always at a 7-8 when we leave the house and doesn’t care too much about corrections when he hits 10. I’ve lost all confidence at this point and feel like I am circling the drain. He is difficult and exhausting. Thank you for your KZbin videos. They have taken me as far as I can personally go with this dog though. I trained the dog I had before him, who was also very difficult. (They are both Australian Shepards) He turned out to be the best dog, and friend, anyone could ever have. He was also much loved by my community. This dog couldn’t be more opposite. I will never get rid of him or anything. I love him to death, however, I’m sad for him and am beyond frustrated with myself. I just want him to enjoy his life more. We could be doing so many fun things together… I just don’t know what to do anymore.

How much time have to spend with a professional trainer with a history of working with reactive dogs?
@daniellecoates8705 Жыл бұрын
@@tomdavisofficial Thank you for responding. My vet suggested that I contact a dog behaviorist, and gave me a few numbers of people he trusted. They aren’t taking on any new clients though. I feel defeated. My dog and I have made a lot of progress together over the last year from watching your videos. He’s responded well to corrections and positive reinforcement. However, I’m at the point now where all of the different strategies that worked for certain reactive behaviors aren’t working for the other reactive behaviors and I haven’t found a solution. I am a very patient person and have been dedicated. I want to know what I’m not doing right, so a good trainer is key, but finding one that suits his needs has been challenging. I live in CT, on the shoreline. Do you have any suggestions? I really appreciate you taking the time to listen! Thank you!
@endisnear880 Жыл бұрын
My dog is a border Collie Aussie mix and he's only reactive to certain dogs. And not dogs that are in our neighborhood or that we know. But on a hike or a walk we'll walk by one dog and he's relaxed and non-reactive and then We pass another one and my dog lunges on the leash and snarls. In both scenarios, the other dogs are walking fairly calmly, no one's barking or lunging. So now I wonder what are these dogs saying to each other that would make him want to protect me from one and is happy just to hang out with the other?

No bad dogs on your shirt. I can tell you about a bad dog. We visited with new neighbor then we left for home. Next morning cops ring bell, want to know if I heard anything last night after we came home? Some dog barking! Daughter of this new neighbor had seen her mother through door window. Mother was attacked by police dog. He killed her! Then ate off her neck. By time cops found dog, he had ate into her chest cavity through her neck, an was eating her inter organs! Yeah, I'd say, "BAD DOG"! An he was a police dog which made him even worse! One day earlier this same dog charged me while I was just walking by his fencing. If fencing was not there he would have tried to kill me! He was biting the chain link fencing to try to get at victims! Yeah, BAD DOG! THERE IS BAD DOGS OUT HERE! DON'T BE STUPID THINKING ALL DOGS ARE FRIENDS OR FRIENDLY! WE KNOW BETTER! JUST ASK MY NEIGHBOR? OH YOU CAN'T HER DOG KILLED HER!
