The reason why this occurs is due to the temperature gradient between the ice and oil with normal ice. Ice is made from water, water after it gets above the boiling point converts to steam, if it's done fast enough, it effectively creates a steam explosion, which carries oil with it that it still /very/ hot and ready to ignite. Dry ice on the other hand is frozen CO2, so it bubbles off rapidly as the CO2 escapes, but doesn't convert to steam, and thus does not cause a steam explosion.

I work in the fire protection industry and I once saw a story about a deep fryer that caught on fire at a restaurant. There was an employee there that had a bucket of ice and threw it on the fire to put it out. The ice exploded and the employee was tragically killed. I saw pictures of the stainless steel hood afterwards and it was shredded from the explosion. The best professional advice I can give is NEVER put water or ice in a deep fryer, always have a proper fire extinguisher handy in case you are cooking and have a fire. There’s a special K class fire extinguisher that has chemical that’s specifically formulated for kitchen fires, especially deep fryers. The dry chemical will put out the fire as well, but the dry chemical can churn into the oil and if it’s still hot enough, the fire could reignite. The K class extinguisher uses a special liquid chemical that foams up when it hits the hot oil and leaves a layer of foam on the oil to keep it from reigniting. There’s also techniques that you need to learn before using any fire extinguisher, especially in a kitchen or cooking area.

Trying to remember the trick words we used to remembering extinguisher classes in automotive tech school. A was for Ash, or regular materials. B was for Boil, or flammable liquids. C was for current, or electrical fires. D was for Dense(?), or flammable metals. And K was for the kitchen, or cooking fires. For some these one word correlations were the only reason they got those extinguisher questions right.

I highly doubt he'd let a cat just _walk up_ to a fire, and I can guarantee the cat wouldn't either. We can generally feel that a heat source is pretty damn hot before we actually touch it. Just walking near the fire would probably be enough to deter the cat from walking _into_ it. It's an animal, not braindead.
