With a background of over 25 years as freelancer/contractor/IT-gypsy I still not see any reason to settle Faang or the fangs of any big corporate entity. It is nice to learn always something new when having them as a new client and provide from once experience as a consultant, but there are so many opportunities to choose out there, and the most important thing is to know when to move on and do a decent closure.

When I heard that preparing for the interview takes about 3-4 months I knew FAANG wasn't for me. I never had to do that in my entire life, I took a month recently to prepare for my new job, do the interview and a quick test, nothing fancy just regular stuff. That month I spent chilling the whole time because I hadn't had a vacation in a while, so thinking about me studying 3 months and above that do my job, lol, that's nuts. Have fun working in faang, for what I hear people there last like 1-2 years anyways, helps a lot in your resume, but what do I know right?

Good video! However, I think the assumption that it takes a 4.0 GPA and 6 month of leetcoding to get into FAANG is a bit exaggerated. I personally did the blind 75 (92 problems total) with a 3.2 gpa and was able to land a job at FAANG and interview in all of them expect Apple and Netflix. I am also not from a big name university. Just saying this since there was a time I was discouraged to apply to these companies having similar assumptions.

Agreed. I don’t have a college degree and I can get an interview at any of these companies just by going with my LinkedIn. Once you have working experience it’s fairly easy to get an interview. I’ve literally had three AWS recruiters, and Apple recruiter, and Google recruiter reach out to me in the last two weeks
@manny7662
@manny7662 Жыл бұрын
@@RightStickRob I would like to be at that point eventually. I'm currently working at a startup (Unpaid until we build their platform). It took nearly a year to find this opportunity because I'm only sitting at an associates and some college. Do you think this would help me find the next position much more easier?
@comcastlover
@comcastlover 2 ай бұрын
@@RightStickRob lol that might be YOUR experience, but this is definitely not true for the majority of people in tech. There are definitely people who have worked in tech for decade, but have never had a chance to interview with a FAANG company. Getting in FAANG is still extremely competitive with around a ~2% acceptance rate.
@RightStickRob
@RightStickRob 2 ай бұрын
@@comcastlover 2% is incredibly misleading. You have to consider how many applications come from people who are completely not qualified whatsoever. I’m not saying it’s easy to get the job but it is not difficult to get an interview with legitimate work experience given that the market as a whole is hiring. Every single developer at my company has been contacted by a recruiter from one of the big companies at some point. if you’re a new developer or a recent graduate, of course you’re going to have a low acceptance rate because you don’t have any work experience. Work experience trumps whatever school you went to any day of the week. I’m telling you this is someone who actively hires developers and works with plenty of 10 to 15 year experience developers. I have about seven years of work experience now. If I had attempted to get these jobs when I first begin, I would totally agree with you about it being almost impossible. Having been in the industry and worked with hundreds of developers at this point, I have to completely disagree with your probability about getting an interview. That 2% statistic is the acceptance rate of getting hired, not interviewed.

I think it’s only hard to get past the résumé screening process if you just graduated from college. GPA is irrelevant once you have working experience. I don’t even have a college degree and I can get an interview a FAANG company literally anytime I want one. It’s because I have working experience at multiple companies and have progressed in seniority throughout each of them. At the end of the day if you want to be successful at these companies you have to have an appetite for learning, never get complacent with your technologies, and be a valued contributor on all of your teams. If you do that getting the interview was the easiest part

Coding is not something you want to to your whole life. The important thing with a job is to develop as a professional, learning new skills as a project leader, manager or expert. Tech change so fast so find a role where your dependency of the current tech is not that big because things get obsolete in a few years.

You are the embodiement of what NOT to do actually to be 100% honest, you have to be a person who truly wants to contribute to a better society and actually the whole ''dark side'' is just a small portion of these companies. At one of these companies the good seniors will instantly recognize who just likes coding and who just wants to earn 300k a year and guess who will never get to earn that 300k a year. Your type of people are the reason that there are many bugs in todays software and there is no progess, but it's getting better tbh. Btw don't hate or delete my comment, by commenting I am boosting ur algorithm and money which you are very keen on of course.

I agree with not going into software engineering solely for financial means (which, that is already a privileged reason.. some people have to do it in order to survive). But you may have missed the point of the video (there was a lot of sarcasm and inner reflection involved). No one is perfect, and I absolutely love coding now 😊
@revoltoff
@revoltoff Жыл бұрын
@@PoojaDutt I kinda doubt that but maybe, would you code without any financial compensation? This is why Meta for example is falling hard right now (look at the recently published financial results) Also that is untrue in my opinion, most people who code do not do it to survive at all, those ''survival'' jobs are way harder physically (and as a result of that mentally as well) that it is so unfair to compare those, even in third world countries a coder earns a lot more than any other profession, in 95% of cases so that is a non-argument, unless your idea of ''survival'' is buying a latte every day outside and having a big house and 2 cars and the newest macbook(?) which in a way it probably is lol... So let's agree to disagree...
@whiteskull1067
@whiteskull1067 11 ай бұрын
@@revoltoff Stop getting mad at other people whose parents were smarter than yours (I'm not privileged, so her parents were smarter than mine too). In other words, your parents should not have had you if they could only give you the bare minimum. It's not this girl's fault that survival to her is her own home, own transportation, and modern technology. That's reasonable for a dignified standard of living. Stop with the poverty p*rn please, from one 3rd world citizen to another. Also, even if coders earn more than other jobs, if you're from a third world country it's STILL not enough for a dignified standard of living, because the government f*cks up taxes, the education system, employment and benefits gatekeeping, and cost of living so much, but 3rd world residents are so used to a sh*tty standard of living that they think "not struggling" + "affords a few personal hobbies" is "privileged." STOP. THAT. SHT. That mindset is why these governments and bad elites (there are good elites) stay in power. I absolutely agree with this statement as a standalone though "you have to be a person who truly wants to contribute to a better society"
