Had a blast fishing the Whopper Plopper after work. This bait is KNOWN to catch a ton of fish. Unfortunately, I missed a lot of good bites this day. After watching the footage and thinking about it for a while, I could have chosen my rod/reel selection a little better by using a bait caster and heavier rod but mostly, I was definitely setting the hook a little too hard on these fish. Regardless, I walked away with some good fish and learned a little bit more about fishing top water. Let me know what you think and enjoy!

Try this next time. The hooks on today's lures are way sharper than they used to be. The hooks on that Whopper Plopper you were using are also very large in diameter. Power setting the hook, especially with braid and no stretch in your line, can actually put a large hole in the fishes mouth. Then when they jump they shake the hook right out. If you can, go down a size in your Whopper Plopper and DON'T try to "set" the hook. Just wait until you feel the fish and then lift the rod up with some pressure, but not a major hook set, and keep the pressure on. Smaller hooks will help the hook penetrate easier, and no 1980 hook set will help to insure that there are no gaping holes in the fishes mouth. You'll still lose some. That's top water fishing. But... you should catch a lot more.

I've never been lucky with topwater lures in general, maybe I can turn it around this summer. You got my hopes up!

Fun video. I've always thought topwater worked best when retrieving against the current in moving water.

Nice St. Croix rod Man!! I also like to use a spinning reel once in a while, only thing that with a Plopper to set the hook with a spinning rod it’s a little more hard cause of the way you have to hold the rod, much easier to use a baitcaster in this case. But really enjoyed your video and good luck in becoming a you tube sensation!!! 😊😊

Great point! You can certainly feel the difference with the hookset too. I felt a lot more confident with the bait caster combo than my spinning combo. I appreciate the input and thanks for watching!

I miss them too. The hardest thing fishing top water, is to wait a second before you set the hook. When the strike happens, the hook set is like a reflex, but if you can just wait half a second before you set the hook you'll catch a lot more fish. It's easier to say then do, I try to wait myself, and when I do I'll usually catch the fish. The same goes when throwing a frog. Thanks for sharing the video.....FishOn....Jim

Very true! I find myself getting antsy with the hook set while fishing top water. Being patient is key. Thanks for tuning in!

Hey man. Think there was a better bait that could have been used. Based on this video and the lower water temperature, I think the fish were short striking. So I personally would have used a slower bait. But I’m only 12 so I’ve got a lot to learn still

If you would have used a Texas rig as a follow up, you would’ve caught many fish I believe. But I know that you wanted to do a top Water video. I understand that.

Funny you mention that...I am putting out a video Friday where I fish the T rig in this exact same stretch of creek. The bass were all over it. Be sure to stay tuned for that one. I appreciate the input and your viewership!

I think you had the wrong bait on. I think the fish were short striking the WP because of the water being too cold. A slower bait would've possibly worked better with truer hook sets my friend.

That's actually a really good point. I thought I was using the right bait because of all the action but didn't take into account the short striking. A slower bait may have done the trick. Thank you!
