Because my brain doesn't remember what I can't see, I had three failed attempts at a compost bin before this new one that I'm trying to balance and save. I moved it by my front door, so I get daily information on when it needs turning, moisture, or fibre, so far it's working out. Just a little bit stinky because I watered it when it dried out completely, (Australia, amirite?), and then it rained so the microbiome not only reactivated but flooded and then partially drowned. Thanks for the tips, I'll add more fibre and aeration.

Problem is that in my plot, the majority of what i can put in it is grass clippings. Not much brown stuff to add there... Apropos, I wouldn't put newspapers there, something tells me the "ink" is not something you want there

Old newspapers, I'm about to shred some old documents and stuff (nothing other than paper). If you have a lawn, the grass clippings, twigs from a fallen tree, or dried leaves and dead plants

I just started composting using grass clippings, sawdust, discarded vegetable matter, twigs, etc and it just reeks of elephant excrement. Not sure if I made a mistake by throwing in a Septic Tank bacteria packet to introduce bacteria or perhaps I added too much water because my compost pile looks like sludge.

You put too much water in it add dry materials like saw dust to absorb the water completely so it can start composting quicker, water delays the composting process because it has to evaporate before it can start composting

@@bilalraja6745 You're right...once the excess water all evaporated, it started to break down quickly and now has a pleasant earthy aroma to it. I also threw in a few live earthworms into the compost which I dug up while doing yard work to aid in the decomposition process.

If your bin/pile gets full, you could also store a good amount in a bag or bin in the freezer. It won't compost until you take it out, though it's better than sending it to a trash heap.

Summary: Should not smell...for that... Keep it in proper mosture ..green adds water browns drys water...balance both to keep mosture but not wet...keep turning compost to add air
