My daughter is a hairstylist and she’s amazed at the people who come and sit in her chair and request a certain cut/style but then proceed to tell her that they do not want to use any product or have to physically style the hair in any way. I tell my hairdresser to not give me anything complicated, as I will not have the time or energy to style my hair after washing - only when I'm going out, but not for everyday. I bought a hot air brush to help, as I have too much pain to blow dry my hair well, but it's just too hot for me. Then I found a Babylis hair dryer and styler that has a cooler setting. It's been a game changer. But it's discontinued, so I'm looking at the Shark Speedstyle to replace it. Still haven't made up my mind.

I always used a mousse and within an hour, I had no volume. I took your advice and didn’t towel dry my hair and then used gels instead of mousse (because of course I had a lot of products under my sink!) and cannot believe the difference in styling my hair! The over style so it falls to what you want is KEY!!! 🔑 I curl my hair the same way too. The curls are tighter than what I want at first but when I leave they have fallen a bit but from too much volume, so it’s still voluminous! Same for volume. I look like Dolly Parton in the bathroom and by the time I leave it has fallen a bit and I have the volume I want.

OMG!! I've wrapped my hair and done my makeup first all of my adult life. I have fine hair and need volume. I use a spray volumizer. I get so disgusted when 1 side (the rt) looks perfectly volumized and the other (left) is flat. I wish I could stand behind me like a stylist does when drying my hair! Thank you Justin. It’s only been posted for 1 hour and you already have almost 2000 views. Awesome. I wish I lived closer to you. I’m a very old hairstylist from 1970. You know…using the straight edge without the guard to get a good back comb base that lasts a week. That’s what we learned. I still have that straight edge too. I am not kidding when I say I have the absolute worst hair I have ever worked with and I live in Iowa where it’s cold and damp/wet or very hot and extreme humidity. Our heat index easily gets over 100 which most people don’t realize. It’s corse and when I was young a comb would actually break even with shorter hair. I wear it short and spiked in the back because my hair must be saturated with soap and water to make it bend in a different direction when I wake up. I would’ve loved to have that beautiful long silky hair but by the time it gets below my ears it takes an hour to get it done because it’s so stubborn. I use good products and I use good hair spray. But! After about 3 hours after using the strongest Kenra spray, I can run my fingers through it as if nothing is on it. I know you can’t fix my hair and I’m just rambling. Fortunately only one of my adult kids have my hair type.

Mine turns into orphan Annie’s do shortly after going outside (in humid FL). I did recently get a short haircut & like it better. I’m playing around with it. It’s still thick & wavy. I use a gel I can put on wet or dry. After I’ve dried it most of the way I add the gel & scrunch, with my hands, all over. I really like that it stays lifted & looks sort of like I took the rollers out & just ran my fingers lightly though it. Then a little spray & I’m ready. TU for the tips!

I've looked at other KZbin channels that have actually given either not helpful advice and sometimes even terrible advice. I am especially thrilled with your videos on cutting/trimming one's own hair. Your instructions are excellent and I have been able to do so much in that regard with my hair. Same with styling, etc. Since I began watching your videos, I am loving my hair -- and have been getting so many compliments on my hair -- cut and style both. 9:30. Of course some people’s hair increases in volume in humidity. Both my sister and daughter have extremely thick wavy hair. In humid climates you can practically see their hair getting bigger and bigger. It’s definitely a thing.

Standing in front of our house, I got shampooed up and......there is never enough water from the sky to rinse all of that shampoo out! Lesson: don't wash your hair outside. Today at 58, I washed my hair (in the shower) on a 98% humidity morning and sat on my front porch in the dark, with the moon, and dried my hair. It looked great! UNTIL....I walked inside and BACK outside to walk the dog. Lesson: MY HAIR will frizz no matter how I dry it, as long as the humidity is above 88%. 😬 But I haven't given up trying.

I have fine curly hair. The thing that gives me the most volume is hairspray in my wet styled hair before I diffuse it. Also, a more medium hold mousse or gel gives me more volume compared to a hard hold.

In addition to mousse and gels, there are also volumizing sprays (Aveda makes a great one) that are fairly lightweight. However, they can leave a bit of a sticky feeling in the hair. I use all three methods, though.

I have had good success with the Colorwow XXL foam on my roots (works really well for being so lightweight) and either the Ouai or Olaplex volume mist on the mid to ends. Blow dry with a round brush and the volume/texture holds me a couple days, which is a first for me.

That was extremely helpful! I have very fine but very full head of hair. Finding the right stuff for root lift is a pain. Not weighing the roots down but keeping ends moisturizered enough. I swear if the product doesn't get distributed just right, my hair is still and looks oily. Can't wait to try all these tips. Love this channel!

I'm the exact opposite. I get so overwhelmed by those hundreds of products, you find even in normal drugstores (never mind high end or speciality brands), I lose all will to live and just slink home defeated. How am I supposed to know, what could conceivably work for my hair and haircut??? How am I supposed to know, how exactly they want me to use the stuff and how much to apply and where? It feels like these days, you need a PhD, just to choose the right hair and skincare. When I was a teen, we had gel, mousse and hairspray, that was it. And like most teens back then, I used none of the above. 😭

Very true point. I should have explained the difference between volume and fullness. To me, volume is having volume in the right areas to accentuate what you want and have the style you want. Fullness, which is what IMO you're experiencing, is just hair getting bigger. If that makes sense. I appreciate you for bringing that up. I'll keep that in mind for future videos.

Great video. I need this constant reminder not pull down on the after creating as much volume as possible. I would love it if you have any videos about toppers. I have alopecia (hormone induced basically) and the crown is just getting thinner. It began in my 30’s and while I can still get away with not wearing one, I get so tired of never feeling like I have a full head of hair. I also started getting silver hairs in high school. My normal color is dark brown so it really stood out. If I let my hair go to it’s natural gray now that I’m closer to 50, it would be see through. So I get tired of the constant root touch ups, highlighting, adding volume, destroying the ends, and even back combing to cover the areas that just show gray too quickly.

I have fine hair, not curly, and it always has a better shape and more volume in humid weather. Growing up in New England (the really,really cold part), my hair looked best in the humidity of summer. When I moved to Jerusalem, the summers are dry but it rains in the winter - which is when my hair looks best here. BTY, I learned alot from your videos on layering, and the difference between the hair high on the sides and around back toward the occipatable bone vs the part below that. I told my stylist that I liked the layers and I always get compliments, but my hair always feels messy and the shape is hard to control. He shortened it a bit, leaving only some layers in the higher sections you mentioned. It looks less "cool' but is such easier to shape. I use those dimensions to hold on to volume. After I've styled my hair and on my way to work, I grab the part that I don't want to lay flat, and hold it up with a clip or soft scrunchy. I take that out before I walk in! And my volume is good to go.

Hey Justin. I am a subscriber. I want and need volume in my aging/greying hair. I take very good care of it and keep it short. I have "lowlights" refreshed every 2 months...but I have yet to be happy with most hair additives. I am 62 yrs old, have dry hair...and a little bit more hair loss than I would like. I use an oral supplement and shampoo which helps some with the fallout. Lucky for me...I have thicker hair and can afford to lose "some." I wash my hair every 3 days...so any products will gunk it up...one night after application. Fortunately...I am retired so don't have to apply sticky stuff everyday. One product smooths and doesn't "gunk"...but doesn't give me much volume either. I use a thickener spray...effective but leaves residue. Both the Mousses and sprays and hair oil styling products end up crunch-ifying and/or gunk-ifying my hair. My hair looks great "hands off" when it airdries after a wash. But I bathe at night...not morning. So...when I get up...hair is frizzed, frazzled and out of shape. Additives are applied so sticky and gunky the following day. I have very coarse wavy/curly gray and brown hair. I use mousse and blow out each section, then heat protection then blow drt brush and roll onto Velcro rollers . After my whole head is done, then i do my makeup. Luckily this will last a good week. Like you said i do look a little over styled when the rollees come out but after about 30 minutes its fine. I have mid back layers.

My hair is very straight and I live in southeast Louisiana where it's VERY humid. My hair doesn't frizz...no, it just gets flat and seemingly straighter, which sucks because I have my hair cut into a bob and I like it to turn slightly under but with the the humidity, it makes it look blunt...and I loathe that look. I totally hear you! That tip will help but if I’m honest, it won’t solve the overall concern. For you, it’s going to be about a product that can block the humidity as well. I haven’t seen anything that I absolutely love for this however this makes me want to do a deep dive into trying to find something. I’ll definitely be looking deeper! I wish I could give you a simple answer for this, but to be honest, it’s just a tough situation to be in.

I have been using Aluram Volumizing Foam, which I love because it doesn't have any alcohol and it has a soft, creamy feel to the foam and doesn't weigh my hair down. Are you familiar with this product? If so, what are your thoughts on it? thank you♥

I found some root lifter in my drawer. I didn’t know I even owned it, but I will try it now. I do have a lot of other crap under my sink I need to clear out. And in the drawer with the root lifter. And yes, I’m one that doesn’t like product in my hair.

I've been mixing a cream leave-in conditioner with a gel smoothing balm. Sometimes I get a nice (enough) result but not always and it's probably what you're saying about even distribution. As for the graveyard of products, I keep mine hidden in a suitcase under my bed because I can't risk having it discovered under the sink, where I don't think it would all fit anyway! Even so, I bought two more hopefuls last week. I feel like a gambler who can't tear herself away from the black jack table. Maybe I'm one hand away from a winner!

Loved your “bonus tip,” Willamette valley can get some ‘liquid humidity’ quite often 😉 and hopefully that will help. As for volume, I get it by washing my hair at bedtime, towel drying, then pulling it up like a ponytail on Top of my head (securing it with a “thick” scrunchie-a thin one will leave dents in the hair) and sleeping with it. It’s not dry all the way in the morning, so I blow dry it with my head downward-no product. Strangers stop me all the time to exclaim about my hair. (Before I started doing this, I can’t remember that ever happening 😆) Thanks for your great videos!

I hardly ever put product in my hair. Less than once a month, maybe even less. It was sad and flat and wirey. I kept thinking I needed more conditioning. Getting older and it was frizzy on the ends and greasy at the root. Then I watched your how-to shampoo video. I still hardly ever use product but my hair is... sheesh it's crazy how different it is. Bouncy, full, even kind of wild, which I like. My hair is naturally curly and I thought since I was well into my 40s that my hair just didn't want to curl anymore. I was wrong. It's super curly just drying naturally. I also never blow dry. Anyway, this is all to say that for some hair types, no product can work great just need to shampoo and condition properly.

Can you PLEASE do this for someone with a curly/wavey hair? I’m trying to get volume from my roots without using a brush, my hair does NOT like to be brushed as it just frizzes. So how do I get root lift while encouraging my natural curls? Would really appreciate your help. It’s gotten so much worse since menopause & turning 60, as my once very full head of fine, coarse curl/wavey hair is down about 2/3’s of its original thickness, so now I have to put a lot of effort in to get a hairstyle that is half way presentable 🤦🏼‍♀️ And then I only end up pinning it up cause it doesn’t last last my front door 🤯 And yes I know there are heaps of curly girl influencers out there, but I’ve got a cupboard full of product (just as you said) under my sink of products that are just not working for me. It’s gotten that bad that I’ve had to hide the scissors before I do something I know I’m going to regret! 😢 Your help would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏻

Where I live we deal with high wind year-round AND humidity in summer months! Volume? We're lucky if we can get any of it to stay...especially if you've got fine/thin hair like mine. But I LOVE your tips and will try them 👍👍

I have began a journey which never thought I would ever do, I have now decided to let my natural hair color shine thru as I'm a natural ginger then went with blonde high lights and low lights, embracing my natural color is surprising to me now, not sure if I like it as it seems very fine now that the hair color has washed out but I will certainly try your tricks of your trade, I am so guilty in leaving my hair in the towel while applying my makeup and then going in with my hair products, I am anxious to try what you suggested ! I live in Ireland and trying to keep any type of wave or curl in my straight hair is almost impossible. When my air is wet, I have natural waves, but the minute it's dry, and I brush it, all is gone. I will try your method of putting some volumizer in my hair when it's still wet and use my flat iron for curling. Hopefully that works. What does work are ragcurls, but then I really have tight curls instead of loose curls.

As a 2B, fine, low Density gal, product is your friend, styling techniques matter. As a wavy, damp product application is often recommended. However, I have found that re-wetting my hair after a brief t-shirt plop can make all the difference. A wash now, style later approach also works for me, I often get better results this way.

Everything you said happens to me. I've tried it all. I'm awful at using a round brush and hair dryer so I bought the Shark Flexstyle. Can an air brush actually give lasting volume? I use it and it lasts for about 2 minutes. Even with every product on the market.

I keep my hair short and layered. If it gets longer it is flat which i hate. I blow dry and finger comb it, use instsnt freeze gel and blow dry again. Then give it a light spray and use curling iron. When i get it where i want it i spray it again. Its a whole ritual but it takes about 20 min every morning. Stays put all day.

Hello Justin, I’ve just found your channel within this last week. I have watched a multitude of your videos. I love your work ❤ I worked as a stylist behind the chair for 15years. I was very competent then as a stylist. That’s been many, many years ago. Your explanations about hair have been like a reeducation program for me! Can you show us how to style the very front of the hairline from freshly washed hair so that it looks and stays lifted ? (Side parted hair ). Is using hairspray or gel or mousse the only way ? Every stylist I have ever had has blow dried my fine, thin hair puling it down and straightening it so it turns out absolutely flat. I can’t understand why I can’t find a stylist to dry it correctly to create volume. I am able to create lots of volume simply by drying it with roots pulled up and hair wrapped around the brush, pulling it thru a couple times as you demonstrated. The only way to get the volume to stay is to overdo it as you suggest, but I also always use hairspray. The secret to hairspray is to hold it far from your head creating a fine mist all over. It’s a little stiff at first, but shortly after spraying my hair is soft again.
