It's actually crazy that the Imperial House of Japan is the oldest running hereditary monarchy in the world, being able to verifiably trace their lineage all the way back to the 6th century AD... And all because every single military leader who took over Japan was nice enough to let the Emperor still be "Emperor" while he did the actual ruling. Any one of the dozens of coups that took place could have ended them but every single time it happened they were like, "Nah let them be".

...and then even after WWII the USA let Hirohito off too. Even some Japanese wanted him put on trial for war crimes, but General Douglas MacArthur insisted he stay on to give legitimacy and continuity to the new government in the eyes of the Japanese. The reason for that is that in the Shinto Religion the Emporer is a direct descendent of the Gods (only after the loss of WW2 the Emporer declared that he isn't infact a God). The Shogun on the other hand "officially" was tasked by the Emporer to lead the army and rule the land. Therefore ruling himself by heavenly degree through the emporer. Removing the Emporer, who was the most important religious figure of Japan would have been politically suicide for the Shogun. All of Japan would have assembled behind the next best rival warlord to bring justice back to the land, who would have been made the next Shogun by the imperial Family (which was rather large to begin with). So the relationship between Emporer and Shogun wasn't one of two competing "Monarchies" but more similar to a Pope and a King in a delicate web of political power both parties had to balance

Brief history lesson. Japan was getting firebombed long before the atom bombs were dropped and, ironically enough, the casualties of a single firebomb raid on a city could typically be greater that the casualties of the atom bomb itself. The difference was that the A-bomb was one single massive explosion, big and loud enough to prove that the US wouldn't need hundreds of raids with thousands of planes to fire bomb the country as they had been doing, bit that instead they could do the same damage alot more effectively. I'm mentioning this because there is a trend these days to believe that the two atoms bombs used on Japan caused the most devastation to the country. They didn't. They just left the biggest legacy of fear, which was the intention.

And I love how everybody's saying in the chat that it was dropped after they surrendered. No the hell it wasn't. They finally surrendered the day after the second one dropped. Literally the next day. And as bad as the death toll was it could have been a lot worse if they didn't surrender. Because at that time Russia was starting to turn its sites on other places after they beat Germany and it was looking like they were planning on continuing the war attacking the allies So if the fight went on too much longer with Japan that war could have possibly continued and instead of a few hundred thousand it could have increased by millions. Instead of only 70 million deaths it could have kept going. 100 million? 150 million? It's terrifying to think that possibly dropping those bombs on Japan were the best case scenario. Of course we will never actually know. It's a horrible thing that happened that never should have had to happen but at the same time we don't know if what could have happened otherwise would have been worse or not

@@Alexanderthegreat159 It's not even the deadliest bombing of Japan in WW2. The incendiary bombings on Japan were killing way more people. So if you ever find a pissed off hornet in your room, just feed it some honey, and it'll calm right down. Well, relatively. As much as a hornet can calm down anyways. If you're remarkably unafraid of stings, you can even finger feed it and it'll crawl right up your hand and just sit there. Just replied with reasons I believed the bombs were unjustified but researched the facts again just in case I was wrong. So apparently there were 6 members of the Japanese war council, 3 of them wanted to conditionally surrender, the other 3 wanted to keep fighting. What finally tipped the scales towards surrendering was actually Soviet Russia entering the war against Japan. So a ground invasion by the US was very unlikely to have happened at that point since Japan was just about to surrender. (I’d thought that Japan actually did formally propose a surrender, just with conditions on the emperor staying emperor which the US rejected) I still think the bombs were unnecessary, even more so since they targeted the 2 most heavily populated civilian cities. Japan would have surrendered anyway because of Russia and all it did was give them a convenient excuse as to why they surrendered. Because it’s less embarrassing to them if they surrendered because of a miracle weapon, instead of being scared of Russia.
@kaiza6467
@kaiza6467 Жыл бұрын
So it isn’t so black and white that “the bombs WERE good” or “the bombs were bad.” Japan hadn’t officially proposed a surrender yet but they were going to. It’s unclear whether America knew this and rushed to drop the bombs before that happened as a demonstration of strength to the world. Or whether America had no clue that Japan was about to surrender, and genuinely thought that dropping the bombs were the only way to avoid an invasion. I lean towards the former, because of where they dropped the bombs and the timing of it. The proposed invasion was still months away, and they just had to target Hiroshima and Nagasaki, densely populated civilian cities instead of military targets. But you’re entitled to your own opinions.
@jonathancrespo3274
@jonathancrespo3274 Жыл бұрын
Im not even gonna go into whether it was right to use the bombs or not, because at the end of the day, the TLDR is that Japan was hypermilitarized to the point where they did war crimes to China/Korea that even made the Nazis recoil in disgust(which is saying sum); not to mention that the tenant of Bushido “Death Before Dishonor” was a saying that their military took EXTREMELY seriously (In Europe, 1 Nazi would surrender for every 3 Nazis killed; in Japan, 1 Imperial Soldier would surrender for every 120 Japanese soldiers killed) Think about it: if we did a land campaign, not only would we raze Japan to the ground, but we wouldve done far more evil and horrific war crimes than the bombs, because American soldiers had a ENDLESS amount of bones to pick with Japan after they watched more and more their friends get horrifically mutilated and demonically tortured to death from island to island. The A Bombs were the only sensible option if you wanted a quick end to the war with the least amount of bloodshed.

I have to agree with the other comments about the atomic bombs being the right choice to end the war. There was 70-85 million people who died during WW2. The nuclear bomb was efficient into forcing the japanese people to surrender, they "only" killed 130k-220k people, otherwise it would have been a bloody war indeed. Although the americans were favoured to win, the japanese would have fought to their last breath. Though, iirc, the emperor was already favourable once germany fell to surrendering and stopping the war, but he couldn't have given the order. The japanese at the time were a stubborn proud people who think in war "death before dishonour". I'm sure you've heard of the seppuku. It's not exaggerated. As a soldier, you are supposed to die in combat. If you are captured alive, it is your duty to commit unalive. I heard stories of whole villages of women and children, about to have their village attacked while the men were away at war, who jumped off cliffs with their children to avoid the shame of being captured by the enemy. The emperor feared his people, and his ministers, would refuse to believe the emperor himself asking for surrender, or quite simply rebel, do a coup and keep fighting. Those atomic bombs were at the time a much lesser harm to japan than the alternative. Both of them. When the first bomb dropped, the emperor immediately jumped the occasion to propose surrender. He told people that he did not refuse to fight, but refused to die helplessly. There is only honour in dying in battle, but this was not battle, this was technology they couldn't fight. And even THEN, one of his ministers still opposed to the surrender, speculating that the americans would certainly not have a second bomb that great. There was also a talk at some point of mass suicide, inspired by historical events where 47 ronin unalived themselves to keep their honour. It's only after the second bomb dropped that everyone agreed they had to surrender.

Is it horrible what those bombs did to people and the land? Absolutely, 100% Would it have been mind-numbingly worse if we went with the prior plan instead? In every possible way. Did we ignore Japan's surrender at any point? Absolutely not: as a people they were stupidly stubborn with an outdated sense of honor in that era and their own leader couldn't convince everyone involved after the first bomb was dropped, so we doubled down and then Russia declared war on them after that and only THEN was Japan's surrender official. And guess what: as the video states, we showed up afterwards and spiked them into the modern day with so much success that it was boggling to the mind, even if they have started to plateau now and have many societal issues.

the way japan recovered after ww2 is kind of crazy when you think about it, they got 2 atom bombs dropped on them and STILL became one of the wealthiest and most inteligent countries on the planet.

I really recommend Wendigoon’s channel. His videos are long, so it may be more of a multi-episode thing, but he’s a great creator. He mainly makes videos about either conspiracies/mysteries and various horror media. He’s also the dude who voiced the guy who got stuck in the cave in the Internet Historian cave video

About the US with the atom bombs. It was either that or Invade Mainland Japan which would've been even Bloodier and would've extended the war longer. But also Dropping the bombs was also a Propaganda stunt as a show of force towards the USSR.

Japan was warned like 3 times about the atom bombs. 1st we did a test explosion and told them to surrender, when they refused we blew up a city and asked them to surrender again. They refused because they believed we only had the one bomb so we dropped a second one

That fella Toyotomi Hideyoshi wasn’t as insane as some folks would think. Hawley wrote a book and made a KZbin series on that conflict, the Imjin War. To sum it up, Toyotomi did it because Japan had just come out of a hundred years of ceaseless war and there were a shitload of samurai and other warriors still around with no war to fight. This alongside seeking to secure his legacy and a bit of ego as is only proper (lest someone else with an ego sweep him aside) and don’t get me started on the comedy of errors between the diplomats to try and end the war. Also, if you want some more mindfuck? Look up Operation Downfall. It was a proposed invasion of mainland Japan itself, and to give you a perspective, we created a shitload of Purple Heart medals (for wounded or killed in action) that lasted all the way into the 21st century alongside other newly made Purple Hearts. One of the reasons we resorted to the A-Bomb.

As much as I love the video itself, It really doesn't give justice to what happened in like manchuria or Nanking, and also yes the atomic bombings in Nagasaki and Hiroshima were bad but the alternative was way way way worse, projected death toll of millions

As terrible as the dropping the nuclear weapons was, it isn't all that much terribly worse than the alternative they had already engaged in with more conventional munitions. The Japanese cities were tinder boxes because of all the wood construction and fire bombing was absolutely horrific. Fire storms and flame tornadoes. "The Operation Meetinghouse firebombing of Tokyo on the night of 9 March 1945 was the single deadliest air raid of World War II,[22] greater than Dresden,[23] Hamburg, Hiroshima, or Nagasaki as single events." According to Wikipedia.

12:01 its not my place to say whether those bombs were necessary but the fact remains Japan were not stopping the fight and _something_ had to be done, though there were certainly many other things that could have been done instead. Japan also did a whole lot of really heinous stuff in the war. For example, most of our modern understanding of frostbite comes from experiments Japan performed on PoWs in WWII trying to figure out how to weaponise the cold

A note about the nukes. As horrific as they were (and I will not stand for downplaying the horror of deploying nuclear weapons), the loss of life that would have happened in a protracted ground war would have been exponentially worse.
