@@ManrajSingh4U Ahmad Jan Thirakwa was pretty damn great & really pushed forward the unique styles of the Farrukhabad/Lucknow/Ajrara/Delhi gharanas, crafting unique kaidas representing each. The few videos you can watch of him were when he was an old man, and he's still amazing. Ud. Allah Rakha really did justice to the 'whole hand' style of Punjab gharana, and Zakirji is a student of it all. Both Thirakwa and Zakirji have really informative videos to watch showcasing the different styles of tabla.

The head of each tabla drum has a central area of "tuning paste" (black spot) called the SYAHI. This is constructed using multiple layers of a paste made from mixture of gum, soot, and iron filings, precise construction and shaping of this area is responsible for modification of the drum's natural overtones, resulting in the clarity of pitch and variety of tonal possibilities unique to this instrument which has a bell-like sound. The skill required for the proper construction of this area is highly refined and is the main differentiating factor in the quality of a particular instrument.

Its so many thousands of years old musical traditions. As the instrument itself tabla is not very old, but the Idea is 5 to 6 thousand years old because its all comes from Sama Veda. Tabla derived its Idea from much much older but also in mainstream use percussion instrument called Pakhavaj (in north Indian classical music system), In south Indian classical music system the same thing is called Mridangam.

Lol. Many things were developed during the 'Mughal Rule', but it was in Modern Day India, the creators and artists were Hindu and Muslims combined. Everyone should do some research before assuming something about another culture.

In very simple terms, the right drum (Tabla) is tuned to the tonic and has 12 different strokes around that tonic. (depending on where and how to tap it.) The left hand drum is not tuned. It has two strokes, but the pitch can be varied using the pressure of the heel of the palm.

The time signature is assiduously maintained through the performance. You were right to constantly nod your head like a metronome somewhere in the middle of the concert. In fact, had you continued clapping metronomically throughout from then, you would have realise that while he appears to be wandering away from the metronome, you will find they are exquisitely controlled journeys all around the metronome and it will merge in and out of the time signature. That is very very typical of Indian classical percussion instruments of all kinds.

There's no metal part on the upper surface of Tabla !! Basically the upper circle part is attached with band like thing made up of stretchable cloth which goes right into the lower part of Tabla and there's a slidable wooden cylinder kinda thing which is adjusted according to the frequency of sound you need

I learned a lot about how the tabla works today - the part where Efra demonstrated on the box thing how your fingers gotta work to make the pitch go higher was insane!! And I appreciate so much the comparisons to Latin percussion. I know nothing about Latin music outside of the mainstream (so….. despacito lol) but if there’s any music that you think really shows off the culture and art and heritage please let us know! I promise if you reply to this with some links I’ll check it out. PS: the only link I can think of between Indian and Latin music is pretty remote. I know that flamenco dance is very culturally important in Spain, and was kind of brought there by the Romani/gypsy people. For a long time no one really knew where they came from, as they had been travelling for centuries throughout Europe, picking up customs and culture wherever they went, eventually becoming their own distinct identity. But from modern research we’ve found out that they originated from North India, in the early 11th century! And flamenco dance has A LOT in common with kathak dance! And kathak is absolutely based on percussion and tabla (just watch any kathak performance, and you will understand). So, that is an amazing and awesome link - but apart from that the cultures are pretty separate, despite all the things we have in common (food, is a big one - chapati and wheat tortillas are the same thing. In Punjab they eat “makki ki roti”, and that’s pretty much an arepa. We eat lots of beans and lentils, and use a lot of cumin and various kinds of chilli. The list goes on.) Sorry I guess I rambled a lot! I was just taken away by this reaction, though I have been watching for a long time. Much love, snd please give me recommendations of Latin music

Each sound has a word associated to it. I was taught starting with "Ghi Ghi te ta Ghi Ghi Na na | K K te ta Ghi Ghi Na Na ||", (te - with index finger, and ta - with the last 3 fingers) Practiceing this first for few hours/days this will let you understand how much force we need for the basic sounds. Later combination are taught on how well you position your fingers and your understanding of the basics.

The sticks on the sides change the frequency of the area near the strings. You can push them higher or lower to tighten or loosen the strings so that when you strike the tabla near one of those strings you get a different note and tone.

It's not that this type of music doesn't follow percussiveness. It's just that this type of music isn't limited to easy time signatures like 3/4 or 4/4 . It's more complex to normal ears. You have to do a lot of counting for that.

Ustad Zakir sahib is showcasing the very fine nuances of what table can be. On other occasions he goes electric... The left side wider part is called Duggi. And traditionally is made out of pottery with goat leather for the strands and camel skin for the playing surface. Both sides can be tuned to different base notes. Ustad here is being cheeky and precise in a contemporary composition. ❤️

The time signature is extremely fluid in Indian classical music, within both its streams viz. Hindustani and classical; time signatures shift from one to the other within a bar quite a lot of times; could go from a 4/4 to a 5/8 to a 9.5/16 in 2 bars and back..

Tabla is its own language indeed. It is very different from how the west perceives percussion instruments to be like. Every thing that he played can be spoken by anyone in the language. If you get a chance to enjoy a beautiful performance of Kathak, you'll notice how a person speaks the language of tabla which forms the basis of the dance.

I am a tabla player here's my take It has its own language Every hit of the finger on the any area of the tabla has a phonetic word attached to it. And we learn it that way. Ustad Zakir Hussain is a legend and has a very different take on tabla. Most other players go by the taal and creates the story around it. He uses the sounds to create various stories and unique pieces which are not played at all by other artists. He is one a kind artistand has taken tabla to a completely different level. Tabla base is made with mud like vases are made. It can also be made with copper. The top is goat skin and black portion is made with iron and rice paste.

The drum on his left is metal body and the one on his right is hollowed wood. The black part is kind of shellac to increase vibrations and I think the skin in both drums is of goat skin. Wooden batons used on the right hand drum are for tightening the drum to the required tune.

His father, Ustaad Alla Rahka, was, by far, the best percussionist that has ever lived (at least IMHO). Ustaad Zakir Hussain is right behind him, but only by a whisker, again IMHO. Zakir is a founding member of Planet Drum, along with Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead. Zakir is also the founding member of the antecedent of AGAM, a legendary band called Shakti (along with McLaughlin and superstar violinist L. Shankar), and later, as a sessions percussionist with a band called Mahavishnu. Both VERY worthy of being checked out. Separately, he also creates a lot of fusion music with the legendary John McLaughlin. I was lucky to have a seat on stage at a performance by Zakir, McLaughlin, along with U. Srinivas on the mandolin and Vikku Vinayakam on the Ghatam at Harvard Square in Boston, MA. I got a major kick when McLaughlin asked me to be his "monitor boy", to make sure his monitor was always pointed at him.

Tabla is traditionally a percussion instrument and played as such. The exploration of melody in tabla is a comparatively newer practice, with Ustaadji taking it to the next level in terms of incorporation in tabla playing and expanding the horizons of the instrument. This kind of playing is truly one of a kind! And yes! it has its own language. There's a video by Pt. Sanju Sahai that gives insights into tabla syllables and playing which you can look into.

You have just heard the greatest living exponent of the tabla. The twin instrument can be made to talk with any other instrument: jugalbandi is a good recommendation. Also, the tabla has verbal notations, by which you learn or memorise the rhythmic structure, and through which you begin. Zakir, his classical prowess aside, has blended with musicians from both the Western Classical world and Jazz. He knows percussion sounds even from the deepest part of Africa and, indeed, Latin America. His father always accompanied sitar maestro Ravi Shankar.
