Hi Dr Cliff, thanks for this informative video. People don't realize how integral hearing is for our development and overall health. I'm in my 30's and finally went to a local Audiologist here in Australia after dealing with hearing issues my whole life and was really taken back by how affected I was without realizing it. My speech is affected, I cant pronounce some sounds because I've never heard them its also why some words despite being simple are difficult for me to interpret because my brain just isn't translating the sounds. Your videos have been very helpful, trying to find suitable hearing aids and what their various technology levels mean is quite overwhelming. You've made the process easier!

Thank you. Covid caused awful tinnitus which prompted me to get an evaluation revealing a 40 decibel hearing loss flat across all frequencies. When I tried hearing aids it was instantly clear that I haven’t heard well for a long time. The first thing I noticed wearing them consistently was a big uplift in mood and energy. When your brain is working so hard to hear, it’s draining, even if it’s subconsciously so. I’ve also increased in my ability to focus and remember. I had even gone through two neuropsych evaluations because I was having such a hard time with memory and was concerned about early onset dementia, they diagnosed adult ADHD and recommended meds, and it turns out I just needed to hear better.

Dr. Cliff I’m borrowing a my father new $4000 hearing aids only used 1 month . I’m amazed what I can hear with slight hearing loss with the hearing aids . I can’t use them all day because they were designed for someone with severe hearing loss . In my ears the hearing aids let me hear too much . The sound of me walking on rug and hearing things outside while inside with dual pane windows . Intensifies my hearing now I know how good a dog hears . ( Anyone that has good coverage for hearing aids even if they don’t need them get them because it will intensify your hearing as a dog hears . Outside in nature you will hear sounds thinking your super hero with hearing powers . It puts the iphone air pods “Live Listen” to shame .

as someone who left their hearing loss untreated for quite some time i can definetly relate to some of these studies and now that i have hearing aids im actually noticing a slow increase in my memory. it seems to be getting better as time goes by however i do still have issues with "processing sounds" at times which is still getting better :)

I get my hearing aids from the VA. It amuses me when the audiologist gives me the speech about how I need to make sure I’m putting them in and using them. I tell them all, I’d rather be without my glasses than my hearing aids. Wonderful tech.

This was a great video. I'm in my 60s and have worn aids since about the age of 3. I have a moderate to severe loss, so I always have the aids on and only take them off when I go to bed. As I get older, I see some of my friends starting to wear aids and often they tell me that they only wear them when they go out and I've always wondered why. I thought it was perhaps that their loss was only mild, so they could cope without them. But to me that never made sense because if they coped, they wouldn't need aids at all. My brain earplugs vs hearing loss .? I started wearing earplugs on the job side up to 8 hours a day . Then started wearing ear plugs when sleeping when sounds kept me from a nice quiet sleep . Bought a sound meter and found out many sounds at unsafe level driving with window down power tools ect . As I aged and part loss of hearing using a hearing aid for higher pitched sounds . When at family gathering and kids screaming dogs barking pull out my favorite earplugs .

Same here! I put them on when I'm getting ready for the day in the morning and take them off at the end of my day before bed. The only exceptions being the obvious times - sleeping, showering, and sick days. If they were waterproof I'd wear them in the shower too. LOL. It's unclear to me why some people don't want to wear them. I enjoy being able to hear more! Hearing technology ROCKS!

@@willowholman7381 if the sound quality is acting up or if they’re hurting you, that’s a valid reason to not wear them.. most people i know actually hate wearing hearing aids and i used to be anti hearing aids but now I’m really trying to get in to it,.. slowly but getting there.. i hate when the sound quality acts up… hate when the domes itch my ear,.. but I’m getting costom molds for the tips on my RICs.. and also need a shorter wire.. I’m very hyper picky about the sound quality because I’m a singer and it has to be perfect.. i had the phonak lyric ones and loved the sound but had to switch because they didn’t end up to be a good option in the end.. tried so many others,.. i tried IIC hearing aids from starkey,.. HATED them so much,.. then tried resound RIC’s and the quality of the sound for music was AWFUL quality.. but fine for speech, and stuff otherwise but absolutely hated them… havnt found my go to yet but getting there with the new phonak RICs that i got recently and those are much better so far.. just need new wires and the custom molds and i think I’ll be good with them hopefully.. The quality is usually really good but sometimes still gets annoying and fluctuates.. I need something perfect.. PLEASE HELP

My dad was a prime motivator for me. The worse his hearing got, the worse his dementia got. Now that I’m starting to lose upper end, myself, I have my More 1s. I learned from the previous generation. Hi Dr Cliff. Nice video. After 3 years of a sudden hearing loss I have a unilateral severe hearing loss only on the high frequencies (low frequencies are fine). I can understand most of conversations on my bad ear but i have developed a nasty tinnitus an hyperacusis. I tried to used Phonak hearing aids tuned to the best fit possible to no avail. It does not improved hearing as audition gains are restrictive by feedback. This limitation in standard hearing aids made them useless. What other hearing aid would you recommend to provide some input on the high frequencies so it could be tuned to the best hearing practice. The T and H are deteriorating to the point that i considering and implant?

Hi Dr. Cliff, Thanks for highlighting this scary reality. How about for Unilateral Hearing Loss (Sensorineural)? My CROS HAs only send sounds into my good ear, which perfectly hears sound & connected to perfect, active, hearing neural pathways in my brain. However assuming my poor/non- hearing ear and side of brain will still be left totally "untreated", since no registered stimulation into them; even though I use a top-tier CROS HA set-up. Is my understanding correct, based on your logic as an Audiologist? Besides conducting surgery on my bad ear (i.e. CIs), will "stimulating" my bad ear with a HA help me, my brain and slow down loss of related neural connections, based on your logic & opinion as an Audiologist, not Neurologist? Thanks.

I haven't seen any studies about SSD and cognition. Information from one ear will technically stimulate both sides of the brain, but not sure if that is enough. CIs do show a positive impact on brain function after Implantation/activation.

Here we are now and I'm absolutely perplexed why they haven't made more progress. What's the minimum hearing loss that hearing aids can treat? Research shows that you don't need to lose 26dB of hearing to have reduced cognitive performance. Can hearing aids even amplify sounds as low as 10dB? It's possible to overlook certain risks to hearing like wind noise from cycling and hammering.

Hello! My dad recently passed away and was basically completely deaf since childhood. he was born in 1951 and the story goes that he had a really bad fever and convulsions when he was a little kid and lost all of his hearing in one ear and almost completely in the other as well he could hear a very little bit wearing a hearing aid in life, we discovered that he had a brain AVm that was treated with gamma knife surgery. He died three years later due to a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm that was 12 cm. Do you think it is possible that the brain AVM could be related to why he couldn’t hear his whole life? Also, could his aneurysm have gotten worse, possibly after the surgery on his AVM?

Interesting video. What does it mean for deaf people? Are they permanently cognitively impaired? Maybe so. As someone with tinnitus and hyperacusis where many ambient sounds make everything worse, the idea of using hearing aides to ramp up sound just doesn't seem like a good idea. And no, my tinnitus is not caused by hearing loss.

one key thing you said in here, people with hearing loss tend to stop excercising. well i have read dimentia videos and they say excerciseing a goodamonut is a key to make sure you don't get dimentia and by excericsing more, unless you have a storng onset of it to begin with you can reverse it back. so perhaps that is the real reason and that the omtivation from hearing loss is not the actaul reason but the side effects of other things it casues. i have a hard time beliving poor hearing would cause dimentia.. if that were the case, then we would have a massive amount of deaf people with diemeita,wouldn't we? and /or people that have had 90 percen less hearing then nomral too but i have seen many deaf people, including in older age. and none of them i have met have any diemtia tha ti am aware of. their speech pattern is not the greatst duteo to not hearing sounds well. but that is a different story.

I have a mild reverse slope loss. The ENT said “it’s mild and I could do hearing aids but you’d probably never wear them.” (Not sure how he determined that) I struggle to hear my husband unless he is looking at me or right beside me. His voice must be right in the loss zone! My tinnitus is horrible as well. Should I get a second opinion? (He mentioned my age of 42 as being a possible deterrent to wearing them)

I have looked online at Amazon but im worried to damage any of my current hearing since they would not be a hearing aid only a hearing amplifier. I have bought a hearing aid before on ebay and had them programed a long time ago at my old audiologist but they lasted 2 years before stopped working so I haven't bothered trying again on ebay.

my big question is, how do I know if I have hearing loss? I've really been struggling to understand speech these last 2 years, but I seem to be able to hear everything else just fine. I can't seem to figure out if I have hearing loss, or just trouble processing speech that got worse when I stopped interacting with people in lockdown...I could of course get my hearing tested, but I did in early 2020 when I developed tinnitus and it was just fine. my issues don't seem to have gotten much worse since then, so I'm confused whether the problem are my ears or my brain. I'm only 19, so it can't be age-related 🤔

I just don’t see how wearing my hearing aids help. All I hear is horrible background noise to the point it drives me crazy. I’ve had 2 pairs of hearing aids. One really cheap pair and one really expensive Phillips pair. Unfortunately, no difference between the two when it comes to promoting hearing.

Then they are not tuned properly. I also happen to have two pairs of hearing aids and those of a higher technology level increase my speech understanding tremendously. Even when I was at the plant with huge industrial pumps roaring around yesterday I had no difficulty understanding what others were saying.

Rechargeable Battery hearing Aides supposed to last 16 hours of listening and charging 3 to 6 hours night time while I'm sleeping for 8 hours . I can swim in the pool up to 2 foot underwater while wearing hearing Aides and fishing and camping in the rainstorm and snowstorm and dust and shampoo and sweating and taking a shower while wearing a hearing Aides .My old hearing Aides kept repeating getting ruined by me sweating and rain storm and snow storm and dust and their is no noise Cancelling device and no surround sound system upgradeable and no Bluetooth to hook up to my cellphone computer and I'm very very tired of replacing microphone filters for every 3 weeks to monthly and changing ear molds every 3 years and changing ears molds plastic tubes every year or longer .

I been born premature baby 3 months too early in 1964 and been wearing hearing Aides since 4 years old in 1970 but it really wasn't a good hearing Aide back then 1970 until 1975 had a behind the ears hearing Aides work Soo much better since I have 75% hearing loss in right ear 👂 and 80% hearing loss in left ear 🦻🦻 And they hearing Aides dealership Audiologist AuD Professional Hearing Aides dealership Center in Deaf School and Audiologist doctor only have analog and digital hearing Aides wasn't even invented yet until 2010 but I couldn't afford it .My medical Insurance company only paid $800. Dollars to $1.500.00 a pair of analog hearing aides and I didn't like it since it kept repeating breaking down .So my medical Insurance company decided to let me go 80 miles away from my house to a much better hearing Aides dealership Audiologist professional Audiologist AuD that work really great my first digital hearing Aides are first generation Digital size 675 battery power hearing Aides was sort of good but after 3 months trials period I'm ready for another better 1 generation Digital hearing Aides that has size 13 battery it longer battery life up to 16 to 18 days work better than old analog hearing aides size 675 battery power hearing Aides and I'm wearing it now Phonaks Milo Plus digital hearing Aides just a basic hearing Aides without any noise Cancelling device and no Bluetooth and no surround sound system upgradeable since that time in 2013 I couldn't afford $1.500.00 for one hearing aide and couldn't afford over $3000.00 a pair of 2 hearing Aides upgraded even with my medical Insurance company paided half of it since I just started living by myself at a expensive apartment after my grandparents had died of old ages when I took care of them . Until mom paided half of my old hearing Aides and still ended up having to get it repaired every 3 years . To last month I'm finally got my medical Insurance company to recommend paying for my new waterproof hearing Aides and I don't know how much it cost yet until next week or longer There are great difference between analog hearing aides and digital hearing Aides hearing better than before . I recommend you get your own hearing Aides fix correctly and getting a new ears molds and tubes replaced and getting a new digital hearing Aides and better surround sound system upgradeable with Bluetooth added and noise Cancelling device built-in hearing Aides like Phonaks Audeo Paradise rechargeable battery hearing Aides or Phonaks Audeo Life Digital rechargeable battery hearing Aides like I'm going to be getting. Go do it NOW!! Demanding to spend at least 2 hours of hearing testing and try to get your own hearing Aides fix correctly and getting new ears molds and tubes correctly .

Hearing aid benefit depends on the type and frequencies of hearing loss and word recognition scores. If good word recognition but need volume louder, hearing aids will often help. Adjustment and fitting of the hearing aid is key to making sure it is programmed for your specific hearing loss. If just a general programming, might not work as optimally.

@@DrCliffAuD I’m sorry if that seemed harsh. That was not my intent. It seems as though your saying if your deaf or you cannot treat your hearing loss your brain will become fried. Or more to the point your brain will not work as well. I suffered a SSHL almost a year ago in my left ear. I had had bad hearing in my right for years due to an accident. My SSHL was due to covid or the vaccine. My doctors could not tell which. Either way it was difficult. I have a crossover system which is ok but with the amount of loss I have life is still challenging. I’m 63 and do not want major surgery so I’m not doing a C.I.. The loss of playing and listening to music has been the worst along with struggling to interact with my grandchildren. But I don’t feel my brain is scrambled. I read, collect books, write poetry, do photography. I’ve had to make serious adjustments and hedges against my future by pushing myself. Your advertisement for your video just bothered me. I think he is just trying to let people know that there are solutions to minimize cognitive decline in people who are experiencing hearing loss especially from old age. It is to encourage them to do something about their hearing loss instead of just accepting it.

@@TravelerBrad I went almost completely deaf in one ear beginning last November. I couldn't get a hearing aid until June 2022 because of all the government closures. Oddly enough, my MRI technician asked if I had the so called vaccine because he's been seeing an uptick in hearing loss in vaccinated people. Answer is No, I refused. The truth about the clovid scam is coming out, perhaps you can sue Big Pharma.
