yeah this is a good point. it's almost like she has almost no frame of reference for how to have an emotional connection with children she never wanted because she grew up with a father who only saw her as an extension of himself and had her get married to a grown man while she was still barely an adult. I mean hell, we literally see her try and seek comfort from her own father right before the scene with aegon crying, and she's rebuffed by him. and then, when faced with her son in mourning, she has no idea how to approach him or offer that parental love she never received. as much as i understand people's dislike of alicent, I wish people could at least put those things into consideration.

I love how these first 2 eps show the difference in parenting between Rhaenyra and alicent when jace was breaking down rhaenyra didn’t hesitate to comfort him but when aegon was breaking down alicent turns and walks away not a comforting word or hand even when they were riding in the carriage and aegon asked alicent if she even loved him she couldn’t give him a definitive answer

That’s a really good point. Alicent looks like a kind and gentle mother but seeing her treatment towards her children, I can’t even find the word to describe her. When Aegon was breaking down, I felt kinda bad for him cause Alicent just walked away like she saw nothing.

Alicent is NOT a good mother. She cannot connect with her children, and it’s awful to watch, but I honestly can’t fault her for it entirely 😭😭 if I was forced to bare children when I was a child myself, growing up in a snake pit with my own father using me as a pawn it would destroy my head and ruin my ability to parent well. In the Hightower family parent’s are not made for comfort, so none of them know what to do with each other, and in this ep you can see how they’re all worse off for it. Otto tries to comfort Alicent but he just can’t, Alicent turns away from Aegon because she doesn’t know how to help him, and Aegon can’t help Helaena. It’s fascinating to watch tbh

Completely agree! My empathy for her ends where she perches herself on a high horse and works so hard to put her rapist, child-mutilating son on the throne knowing full well the information she received from the king was confusing at best.

I've stopped watching HotD. I've read the book so I know what's going to happen and I'll keep up to date while watching your reactions, and while I still look forward to seeing your journey with this show, I just can't continue with it. I loved the book and the characters in it, but the difference in personalities doesn't bother me. It's just...the show characters are soooo unlikeable!!! I can't say I love any character, I like Rhaenyra but just meh, and sympathised with Alicent, but her relationship with Cole gave me the ick beyond measure! With no connection to any of the characters, I can't connect or even invest in the story. I'm still a huge fan of this world though and there are some crazy things yet to come, so I can't wait to see you guys react to them, but Imma bow out of being a hotd viewer.
