Here is another great spot we explored in Halifax. Off limits until very recently it is such a great place to learn about some of the history around Halifax. As you can tell by now from some of the places I have shown around Halifax, that it was very important to Britain and North America and was heavily defended through many generations. Halifax is a must for any history buff. Take care everyone!

Awesome video but be VERY careful flying any drones in the area.... you are in Navy Waters anywhere in the harbour and drone usage without prior permission can result in heavy fines!!!

Well done! It's always fun to hear someone deep dive into a piece of history that I've passed by a million times, but never visited. There have been tours and concerts in the Before Times which I was always too lazy to check out, but now I have to really check it off my To Do list.

Amazing place Wade. Love the views back over Halifax from the boat. Stunning!! And what am interesting place - some great info and learned a lot! Never heard of the Halifax explosion so have read up on that!! An incredible event!! What an interesting place - great to be able to visit there now - we have a couple of Fort George’s over here - one in Scotland. World War 1 was so dreadful - the trench raiding was such a waste of life along with the whole dreadful War. Crazy Thanks for sharing Wade. Very thought provoking film.

It was a very cool place to visit! Love these old forts and Halifax is a beautiful city. I plan on doing a little documentary or something on the Halifax Explosion since it was such a tragic event and huge part of the history there. Yes WWI was dreadful with the trench warfare. My great grandfather used to look for pirate treasure on the island he was the last person living on deadmans island and is the person who told the story to CBC and they made a movie about it

Really well done! Thank-you for sharing. My Grandfather was in the Navy in the 1950s. He told us there are tunnels connecting Halifax to Georges & McNab island then the tunnel leads out to the Atlantic. My Grandfather was told that the Tunnels were here before the British came. And that the indigenous told the French the Tunnels were always there. They were said to be about 3 ft to 4 ft high. Went through all of the Citadel hill.

Leave it to the Canadians to trust their citizens enough to use thin rope to protect the off-limit areas. In the US you'd have to have electrified chain link fence and razor wire to keep them out... LOL

Great to see Georges Island featured on here. We got out there about 4 years ago by canoe. While the island was still "wild". We could see the beginnings of the work being done to eventually make the island public. But beyond that, little was touched. Will always feel privileged to have seen it before it became a public site, since today it's all done up with signage and limited/controlled access. We had 'full access' to everything, raw, unrepaired, and unbarricaded. With the help of flashlights, you could go EVERYWHERE in all the tunnels and underground batteries... Not to mention the ability to roam the fields and enter any structure that was there. I'd say today's "public/tourist" access you get in 2022 is only half of what is out there. It's a reasonable compromise I suppose, as they don't want hundreds of people a day tromping everywhere. I think the next mission for public restoration is McNabs Island... Have been out there (3) times in the last 25 years. Hasn't changed much. Still lots of "raw untouched" exploration, for those who want to get out there on their own terms. A cornucopia of old forts, hidden underground bunkers, gun batteries, tunnels, etc.

Yes, I would have loved to have visited Georges Island before public for sure to explore at my own pace and access more spots. When I lived in NS, I wasn't into exploring places like this, and now that I am, I don't live there now, haha. Mcnabbs is at the top of my list for possibly next time I visit family maybe in 2023. Make a short trip home again. I just need to get ahold of someone to get me out there and drop me off for the day. Looks like there is lots left to check out there.

In about 1981 a friend with a sail boat took me and some other friends to Georges Island. We went through the whole fort not disturbing anything. On our walk back to the boat one of the guys set fire to the dry grass and it spread to the point that the harbour fire fighting vessel came out to put it out. As soon as we saw the fire going out of control we all used our jackets to beat down the burning grass. By the time the harbour fire fighters got there we has put it out and told them that we were there because we saw the fire and wanted to put it out. We didn’t rat out our stupid friend. Around that time some guys from the same yacht club built what looked like the top of a soviet submarine onto a barge and drove it around the harbour scaring the locals. Ah…the good ole’ days.

The tunnels under Halifax stories are fascinating. Some people say there are some for sure that go from the Island to the Citadel Hill and others say it is just myth. There are most likely some sort of tunnels under the city somewhere though. I haven't looked into it but it would be cool to know more about them.

Another point if someone buys a ticket to a special event on George's Island, make darn sure they have enough porta potties or consider bringing your own hassock toilet. I have heard some night mare stories about these special events out there in the Summer.

Acadian expulsion during 7 years war between Britain and France. Acadians are descendents of the French. I don't believe Halifax was ever attacked. Halifax was so heavily defended.

Basically, unrealistic disdain for where they came from. That said, they stood for something very different, or at least distinct, from what the British/English were doing. Without referencing the politics and relation to natives, the Acadians came to North America with the intention of not being part of what had been going on in Europe and that was not what the 'early globalists' were thinking.

incredible how lacking in any depth the two lines given to the Mi'kmaq we're. "They believe the British had broken their treaty obligations" is such a gross simplification, you shouldn't have even mentioned them in the first place. however, great footage again and a very interesting film about Georges Island. I never pay much attention to Georges Island because it is some Parks Canada mossback's personal kingdom. The excuse to keep the unwashed out is that it is a fragile nature preserve - which is true enough. They lease it out for private concerts and the like. It reminds me of Kejimkujik Park. Not a place to enjoy yourself, a place to go to be 'educated.'

Every now and then I see one of these moldy fiberglass plaques from that era at various places in the park and smile to myself. They did a huge rethink of all that and realized they had to compete or perish in the aftermath of covide even with a huge government budget. This year even the legacy canteen with the 1967 styling was shut down. This is how hard Kedge was hit during the Plandemic.
