Just think if he had broke out on his own and done it. He still had the old school mentality of caring about your company. Because it took care of you after 20-30 years. Because it supported you and your community and your children etc.. But around this same time those corps became international conglomerates. So detached from their "communities" that built them, that it became irrelevant. They shipped the jobs over seas at the expense of those communities to gain more profits, more dividends and growth for stockholders and more bonuses for the executives.

A clever employee who comes up with a terrific idea is rarely recognised by the senior managers in corporation. Many who reach the highest wrungs get there because they are good administrators or accountants. If a creative from junior levels approach them with a good idea, they will steal it, they will sack the employee or will bury the idea because of jealousy. If you are lucky enough to create the good idea, explore developing it outside the company. Do your own research, market it over the internet, start small, use your employers clients, then quit your job. Corporations are beasts so treat them like one.
