Masachika and Alya aren't in a relationship, so him telling her she's very pretty in public is embarrassing, one aspect of Japanese culture is to not really show a lot of emotion in public as it's considered rude (it's why you'll see people in videos of disasters looking neutral as possible) Him saying "you're very pretty" is how he feels and he's saying it in public is embarrassing, and Alya flirting with him in front of a girl she knows is equally embarrassing for her, while Yuki plays it off and just stirs the pot because she's evil and I adore her for it.

That is literally my reaction on my first romance series(Nisekoi) and the only thing I can say is that, in a romcom series like this, once the characters confessed their feelings for each other, it means the story is gonna end soon. Romcom animes really tend to use that cat 'n mouse storytelling and I get why it's kind of off-putting

Episode 3 or 4 should be the turning point for the story, when an actual direction is set and the story moves forward with a overarching plan. Volume 1 of the LN is just a parody of romcoms's tropes like the step siblings stuff. Yuki is just an otaku who likes to read that stuff but has an image to show in public, so only Masachika knows. They just make fun of the actual tropes. From Volume 2 going forward, the story gets more serious and let's say Alya and Masachika reach an understanding of the relationship status.

Apparently they got different surnames due to their parents divorce, but they are totally 100% brother and sister. This evil sister just thought it was fun to hide their actual relationship in the school. I doubt this siter actually is into Masachika by this point, she's just playing a fake competitor to make Alya nervous by this point. This also doesn't help when they are in the same grade, because normally you would think a sibling would be a different age.

In my opinion, Yuki has like "2 personalities", at school she is correct, polite, etc. While in private she is an otaku. I think she bothers her brother (I'm surprised it's her sister) with things she reads in anime, it was seen what types of anime she likes where the protagonist kisses her brother haha ​​(she's crazy but it's funny hahaha). To understand why she was so embarrassed you gotta look at the manga. They completely changed/censored the last outfit for the anime but kept the reaction the same. Alya was running really high on those compliments and in her euphoria she seemed to suffer a critical brain failure. Daring doesn't begin to describe it, it was almost a naked apron.
