don't take this the wrong way this is one of the best sonic fangames im for sure gonna hop back on and try and learn it but its just... extremely difficult for no reason. some people like the learning curve and others dont so guess which side i stand on.

Yeh controlling drift WHILE drifting is a bitch to get down right Then when you get that down you gotta learn when to use your rings THEN you suddenly have to remember how tricks work only to fly off the map because you need to use the stomp down mechanic Best Game Ever

got it down in the first cup. forgot that tricks exist tbh which would've helped me allot in the second cup. ring drifting and stomping are easy and satisfying once you have the right buttons and config for it.

I've played SRB2Kart regularly for 4 years, even managed a world record in Time Attack, and even after the 2.1 patch the single player just *bodies* me regularly. What the fuck were they thinking with the difficulty? How is a new person supposed to pick this up when veterans are having trouble? As others have said, bottom right on the stat grid is the hardest to play, go Knuckles if you're starting out and experiment with what works for you statswise. The lower your weight, the tighter your tighter your turning will be, at the cost of lower sparkrate (how much you need to turn to generate the next tier of drift boost), as well as some other factors such as how far you get bumped by other racers

@@AegixDrakan Nothing wrong with that, 7 7, 8 8, and 9 9 were my go to stats in SRB2Kart, If you're comfortable piloting 8 8(Metal's stats) go for it. Metal Sonic is also who I predominantly use, but due to the nature of slopes being harder to climb using high speed characters, I find myself using Mighty and Knuckles as well to mix things up.

Kinda wish they would have gone a different route with stats. One of the fun things about a big character roster is getting to pick your favorite, but if your favorite has odd stats that aren't within your personal playstyle you are fucked. Would have much preferred a system like Crash Nitro fueled where no matter you character or kart it's the handling type you select that changes your stats.

Ring Racers is the living reason why some gameplay mechanics end up on the cutting room floor of game development; either they’re too superfluous, unnecessary or actively detrimental towards the end result and overall appeal of the game. The fact that the tutorial takes around half an hour to beat is inexcusable and immediately deters players from continuing, not to mention the spitefully implemented way of “avoiding” it by playing against expert opponents, with failure forcing you do the entire tutorial all over again. All it would’ve taken was a few static screens going over the gameplay via a controller button overlay like in old game manuals, and so much dev and player time would’ve been spared for it. I know it’s easy to act like an Armchair Game Dev and conjure up ideas to make stuff better, but I can’t help but be tempted to do so with Ring Racers: If KartKrew wants DRRR to be distinguished from SRB2, they should’ve actively made it not resemble Mario Kart or your traditional item-based racer. The Classic F-Zero formula as seen on the SNES original, the three GBA titles and FZ99 would’ve been a perfect template to build upon for this game for both gameplay and track design, plus it still could’ve had curvature, elevation and alternate paths to speed and slide through. It’s a shame DRRR has so many issues, because it looks and sounds fantastic and the track design itself doesn’t seem bad at all, it’s just the convoluted gameplay mechanics and slippery controls that need a major overhaul.

Good call, but as someone who can handle all that, this game is amazing. This game isn't plug and play like most games, but it doesn't need to be because it's not trying to sell to people. People will still play Kart and backport its features, so it's likely you won't be missing out going into the future. Even I will still play Kart when invited because it's still fun and simpler (for the most part). I will say having manual for recaps and verbose mechanics descriptions would be nice, plus a good GM can explain the rules to other people better than a tutorial can. It would also describe other mechanics such as sliptide and whatever the new mechanic tide to it is.

they couldve also used sonic r as a basis with srb2k's control scheme, branching paths that works with or against the strengths and weaknesses of each racers while having the extended items and better control scheme from srb2k

friendly reminder to al my fellow strugllin racers. turn off tilt cam, it makes keeping track of everything SIGNIFICANTLY easier and the devs r demented for thinking tilting the camera on this hell ride was a gud idea. fun game tho.

I think the biggest challnge I'm seeing is hills. Slopes are much more effective both ways than SRB2Kart. Use rings or e-break to depending on the situation.

Update 2.2 just dropped the other day. As someone who initially got filtered after the obnoxiously long tutorial, I gotta admit it's a lot more fun to play now. The handling is smoother, the AI has been toned down a bit (they specifically noted cutting down on rubberbanding), the trick system is now tied to a button press so you don't accidentally run off a ramp while drifting, and there's tons of accessibility options. I still wouldn't call it beginner-friendly but it's worth a second look.

I played on my brothers account as a guest without having to play the tutorial. Picked it up in about 30 minutes myself, with verbal explanation being my only learning item. I’ve download the game with the new patch for rubberbanding and unlocked all the tracks since then by myself without problems. This game FUCKING ROCKS. Sit down and play it for a while. Learn how the stats work. Metal Sonic has some of the worst handling in the game, play a lighter character next time. Knuckles is a good middle ground.

I wish they actually explained the stats. XD I only realized Metal Sonic had bad handling after a solid couple hours of maining him, and by then I'd gotten used to managing it, and every other character felt weird to me.

From what I hear, heavy characters are better at tethering, and stats can even effect your spindash time.

Oh and uh, I know I already posted a comment, but i feel that i should point this out. Each character has different stats that can be veiwed by enabling more information on the char select. If you don't like the feel of one of 'em, I'd recommend trying another! I'd also reccomend setting input delay to 0, and lite steering/drifting to off in your profile settings. It is seriously ridiculous that those are not the default values.

I can manage the offline mode fine enough, but online I tend to barely place in any given race, especially when it has a really tight drift spiral with no walls. Dunno if you figured it out but drifting in this game makes you lose speed, especially if you're trying to move into the other direction. Because of this you do a tighter turn and bump into walls. It feels bad because you're expected to go fast through these corners The solution for this is to use rings, it prevents any speed losses you take from drifting or in some cases, makes you really fast. Got an item? Tough shit, lose it and use the rings. It honestly feels like it'd be better to get the slot machine than an item pick up solely because rings are so good in this game. And items being on the same button as rings make it feel awful

Metal is a very punishing character to start with (High Max speed ergo low acceleration and heavy weight meaning worse handling) I would recommend trying Lighter more Accel leaning Characters (higher up and more to the left) until you get a better feel for the courses.

While the game is difficult and bloated with tons of trash, allow me to point out that you didn't make it easy on yourself playing with one of the heaviest characters in the game and playing with high ping for the first part of the video (shown on the bottom right). DRRR has a long way to go before it becomes a good game but sadly the devs don't seem to react kindly when you point out things that don't make sense.

@@Kiirome the character select grid is basically a chart from 1 to 10 where Knuckles in the middle is 5 speed 5 weight and Metal is 8 speed 8 weight. You can check the stats above the character's icon on the grid by pressing an 'info' Button/key which will be different according to your controls. Hope it helps and see ya again in game.

That entire grand prix is a pain. I can't cross Azure Lake's quicksand without using the respawn mechanic to skip it, and that elephant block thing in Balloon park is genuinely awful. I think those are the only two courses I legitimately hate in the entire game.

Right! Azure Lake was annoying too, but Balloon Park takes the cake of being the worst track in the game. And it seems like the CPU racers phase thru the elephant block thing during Grand Prix runs. And worse, it glitches. Follow by a very annoying funnel drop right after it. It's the reason I never completed the SPB cup.

I still find it amusing that the idea of a tutorial lasting more than 5 minutes max makes people go absolutely FERAL with rage because they would rather none at all and just throw themselves into online/the main game before inevitably flopping and doing bad because they need to get to the thing they want N O W (as if the idea of a new SRB2K doing anything besides just jump on online doesn't matter because lol that all people want). And honestly, the tutorial for the game isn't that bad, actually is quite entertaining at least for a first-time player. And as for the drifting/turns/slopes/ect., someone on the discord best put it that it's about learning when to and not to drift. And to use rings sparingly where you need to most when drifting or going up slopes to do best. As someone who kept sliding off of every edge in SRB2K originally, this let me actually handle big turns safely and do a lot better.
