The reason you are having problems with making moulds for casting is you aren't packing the sand down enough. Personally I prefer petrobond since it gives better detail but your kitty litter (bentonite) and sand mix can make really good moulds if you just pack it properly. It's not enough just to squash it down you need to really punch it (or preferably use a mallet) and then it won't collapse the moment you pull out the object or try to add metal. It's the biggest mistake that newbie metal casters make, and the other big one is not enough heat Also a generous dusting of baby powder is key to stop the sand sticking to the object you are attempting to replicate
@uiomancannot7931

What? You're trying to say that proper moulds don't make things that look like they've been freshly dug from an ancient burial mound?
@Lilith-Rose
@Lilith-Rose 2 жыл бұрын
@@uiomancannot7931 more like pulled out of a canal, but yes, that and pouring all at once rather than in dribs and drabs wouldn't hurt matters either. And to get it to flow around the tungsten is very easy.. you just heat all of the tungsten to above the melting point of bismuth and add it to the liquid in the casting before it solidifies.. they make it look far harder than it really is if you know the basics about casting/common sense. Hot thing gets cold if put on cold thing, it's like dropping ice cubes in coffee and expecting it to stay hot

Fun fact, if you combine Lead and Bismuth in around 50/50, the melting point of that alloy is WAY lower than either Lead (327C) or Bismuth (271C) at around 125C.
